Running over shoe extends Danica's run of bad luck

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) ? Danica Patrick channeled her best Austin Powers impersonation to characterize her recent run of bad luck.

"Who throws a shoe?" Patrick asked Friday in a faux English accent. "I mean, really?"

The line from the original "Austin Powers" movie applies to Patrick after she ran over a shoe while leading last weekend at Montreal. It's not clear if running over the shoe was entirely at fault for ruining her race, but it marked the beginning of the end of her attempt to win her first NASCAR race.

"(I was) looking forward to having a shot to win, and that happened in the lead," she said. "Whether it was what caused the problem or not, I don't know. But it definitely was what ended up leading toward the end of our day."

The shoe, which she described as dark with a light-colored sole, was the latest incident in what Patrick has called the worst streak of bad luck in her career. She wrecked on the first lap at Watkins Glen and was spun by Jacques Villeneuve at Road America ? two other tracks where she might have contended for the win.

"I can't tell how many people said after Watkins Glen what bad luck I had ? and then I hit a shoe," she said. "So I don't feel like it can get a lot worse. I don't know if anybody has ever hit a shoe before. It's just a weird situation. I'm ready for it to turn, I'm ready for some good luck and some good results. I can't remember having this much bad luck.

"I don't ever remember feeling like I just can't seem to catch a break for so long and in such big ways sometimes."

Patrick's unlucky streak rolls into Bristol Motor Speedway this weekend, where she's scheduled to run both the Nationwide Series race and Saturday night's Sprint Cup Series race.

Tony Stewart, who owns her Sprint Cup Series team, picked the hardest tracks on the schedule for Patrick to run this year as a test session for a planned full Cup season in 2013. The three-time NASCAR champion last week asked for patience with Patrick, and said expectations have been too hard on the former open-wheel star.

Asked Friday if she regrets Stewart's scheduling, Patrick said she won't know if the boss was correct in picking hard races until next year.

"We'll know if it's beneficial next year when either I feel much more comfortable coming back to those tracks or I have better results," she said. "At this point and time, it's about gaining the experience. There is a saying, 'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.' So I'm sure that it will help in the long run.

"As long as I can keep my head up and stay confident, and stay looking forward and upbeat, I think they will serve that purpose. But, there's always that chance that these are humbling moments especially being at the tough tracks they are at and the tough races that they are. I've just got to focus on staying positive."

96% The Imposter

All Critics (71) | Top Critics (22) | Fresh (68) | Rotten (3)

Beverly Dollarhide, Nicholas's mother, says of the period after her son's disappearance, "My main goal in life at that time was not to think." Apparently, the filmmakers have taken a cue from her.

Layton's dazzling film is an exciting, edge-of-your-seat experience superior to any Hollywood mystery you're likely to see for a long time.

"The Imposter" becomes more than just a missing-persons drama. It hints at something much darker: a real-life horror story, the full truth of which may never be known.

This is one creepy mystery.

"The Imposter" initially seems to be a tutorial in identity theft, as well as a cautionary tale about the susceptibility of people who have lost a loved one. But that's not the half of it.

Layton's film joins the top ranks of nonfiction films because he recognizes that in this case no solution could be as engrossing as the questions.

The Imposter frequently sends your jaw hurtling to the floor as it tries to understand the great pretender and a family only too willing to accept him as one of their own.

When this film was over, I felt as if I had been holding my breath for 99 minutes. It is pure, delicious suspense.

The mysteries stick with you. In 20 years time, someone will leap up and shout, "Eureka!"

Think of Clint Eastwood's Changeling and multiply by the power of reality.

The month's second mind-blowing doc ... a thinker that deserves the thought.

[The] unbelievable blend of confidence trickery and seemingly wilful blindness is what fascinates most in The Imposter, and raises more tantalising and disturbing questions.

You couldn't make this stuff up - and no one would buy it as fiction. But as a documentary, it's a different matter.

Layton may be making a sophisticated point about the elusive nature of truth but at the same time, it's a point made at the expense of the Barclays.

The year's most fascinating and frightening doc so far, The Imposter delves far beneath the hysterical tabloid headlines.

It's both preposterous and horrific, and therein lies its powerful, disquieting charm.

The real imposter here is the director.

A fascinating glimpse into the mind of a cunning con-man...and it's just as cunning as he was in constructing the story to hold our interest.

Trails off at the worst possible moment...its flaccid legal summary and closing visual manipulations are intentional, leaving audiences with a thoroughly sickening feeling to appreciate Bourdin's prolonged dance of narcissism.

A terrific tale of deception and self-deception, propelled by the presence of the smirking, cocky Barclay claimant, Fr?d?ric Bourdin.

The idea of "The Imposter" is more intriguing than the film's execution.

Keeps you unsettled, haunted, enthralled.

Disease Maps Pinpoint Origin of Indo-European Languages

Turkey might be the geographic origin of languages from English to Hindi, according to epidemiological tracking techniques

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey Indo-European languages appear to have originated around 7,800 to 9,800 years ago in Turkey. Image: flickr/djjasoncook

By Alyssa Joyce of Nature magazine

Languages as diverse as English, Russian and Hindi can trace their roots back more than 8,000 years to Anatolia ? now in modern-day Turkey. That's the conclusion of a study that assessed 103 ancient and contemporary languages using a technique normally used to study the evolution and spread of disease. The researchers hope that their findings can settle a long-running debate about the origins of the Indo-European language group.

English, Dutch, Spanish, Russian, Greek and Hindi might all sound very different, but there are many commonalities, such as the Dutch moeder, Spanish madre and Russian mat', all of which mean "mother". On this basis, researchers have concluded that more than a hundred languages across Europe and the Middle East, from Iceland to Sri Lanka, stem from a common ancestor.

Some scholars think that Indo-European languages spread with farming techniques from Turkey across Europe and Asia 8,000?9,500 years ago. Others suggest that nomadic ?Kurgan? horsemen brought the origins of Indo-European language from central Asia about 6,000 years ago. There is archaeological evidence to support both theories, but genetic studies of Indo-Europeans have been inconclusive, leading to an intractable debate among linguists, anthropologists and cultural historians.

Taking sides
In 2003, Russell Gray and his then doctoral student, Quentin Atkinson, at the University of Auckland in New Zealand generated a maelstrom of controversy by claiming to have solved, by computer modeling, what has been described as ?the most intensively studied, yet still the most recalcitrant, problem of historical linguistics?, coming down on the side of Anatolia4 (see 'Language tree rooted in Turkey').

Neither Gray nor Atkinson is a linguist. But they believed they could work with the kinds of tools employed in evolutionary ecology to answer important questions about language prehistory.

Genes and words have several similarities, and language evolution has conventionally been mapped using a "family tree" format. Gray and Atkinson theorized that the evolution of words was similar to the evolution of species, and that the ?cognate? of words ? how closely their sounds and meanings are related to one another ? could be modeled like DNA sequences and used to measure how languages evolved. By extension, the rate at which words changed ? or mutated ? could be used to determine the age at which Indo-European languages diverged from one another.

Using methods from evolutionary biology, the duo compared common words in 87 Indo-European languages, such as 'mother', 'hunt' and 'sky', to figure out how language ?species? were related to one another. They traced the origins of Indo-European languages to 7,800?9,800 years ago, supporting the Anatolian hypothesis.

Critics were skeptical. Gray and Atkinson had determined when the languages originated, but not where. So, in a paper published today in Science, Atkinson, Gray and their colleagues address this using the type of geography-based computer modeling normally used by epidemiologists to track the spread of disease1.

The locations of current Indo-European languages are well known, and the geographic origin of older, extinct languages ? such as Ancient Greek or Sanskrit ? can be inferred from the historical record. In this way, the researchers believed they could track the movement of the Indo-European languages in the same way that epidemiological models trace a disease outbreak to its source. Once again, they conclude that the origin is Anatolia.

Mars rover passes driving test, looks to hit road

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Now that Curiosity passed its driving test on Mars, the six-wheel NASA rover set its sights on longer treks.

The first test drive around the pebbly Martian crater where it landed was just that ? a test drive. The rover edged forward about 15 feet, rotated to a right angle and reversed a short distance, leaving tracks in the rust-tinged soil.

Mission managers were elated that Wednesday's maiden trek of the $2.5 billion mission was glitch-free. In several days, Curiosity was poised to drive farther to study whether the red planet's environment could have supported life.

"It couldn't be more important," said project manager Peter Theisinger at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "We built a rover. So unless the rover roves, we really haven't accomplished anything ... It's a big moment."

The short spin came a day after Curiosity successfully wiggled its wheels to test its steering capabilities.

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater near the Martian equator Aug. 5 to explore whether the environment once supported microbial life. The touchdown site has been named Bradbury Landing in honor of the late "The Martian Chronicles" author Ray Bradbury, who would have turned 92 on Wednesday.

The rover's ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a towering mountain that looms from the ancient crater floor. Signs of past water have been spotted at the base, providing a starting point to hunt for the chemical building blocks of life.

Before Curiosity journeys toward the mountain, it will take a detour to an intriguing spot 1,300 feet away where it will drill into bedrock. With the test drive out of the way, Curiosity was expected to stay at its new position for several days before making its first big drive ? a trip that will take as long as a month and a half.

Curiosity won't head to Mount Sharp until the end of the year.

Rover driver Matt Heverly said the first drive took about 16 minutes with most of the time used to take pictures. Heverly said the wheels did not sink much into the ground, which appeared firm.

"We should have smooth sailing ahead of us," he said.

After an action-packed landing that delicately lowered it to the surface with nylon cables, Curiosity has entered a slow streak. Since the car-size rover is the most sophisticated spacecraft sent to Mars, engineers have taken their time to make sure it's in tiptop shape and that its high-tech tools work before it delves into its mission.

Curiosity joins the rover Opportunity, which has been exploring craters in Mars' southern hemisphere since 2004. Opportunity's twin, Spirit, fell silent in 2010 after getting stuck in a sand trap.

Earlier this week, Curiosity exercised its robotic arm for the first time, flexing its joints and motors before engineers stowed it again. Weeks of additional tests were planned before it can drill and scoop up Martian soil.

The nuclear-powered rover has been tracking levels of dangerous radiation on the Martian surface in an effort to guide future astronaut landings. It also powered up its weather station, taking hourly readings of air and ground temperatures, pressure and wind conditions.

Over the weekend, it fired its laser at a humble rock to study what it's made of. Unsurprisingly, the zapped rock was typical of other Martian rocks, made of basalt.

During the checkups, scientists discovered a damaged wind sensor, possibly after it was hit by rocks that landed on the rover's instrument deck during landing. Deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada said the broken sensor will not jeopardize the mission since there's a spare.

Since nailing the daredevil landing, the rover team has been acknowledged by President Barack Obama. Gov. Jerry Brown, who declared Wednesday as "Space Day" visited the lab and donned 3-D glasses to view an animation of Curiosity's first drive on a big screen in the control room.

Tips That Will Put You In Charge Of Your Money | Kiwi Discount ...

Beyond helping you with day-to-day money management, developing strong financial planning skills is vital to organizing the big purchases that can define a life, things like vacations, automobiles, and houses. Follow this article to learn all sorts of financial tips.

If you want a good credit report, you should use between two and four credit cards. Credit scores build slower if you only have a single card, but having more than four is a sign of possible credit problems. Begin by having two cards, and add more cards as your credit improves.

TIP! Some people spend $20 to $30 each week in lottery drawings hoping to ?win it big.? Instead, invest that same amount of money in a savings account.

When you need to improve your credit, clear up debt first. Do this by paying off your loan and credit card debts by making some cutbacks. You can decrease your monthly expenses by eating at home and spending less money on entertainment. You will have to cut back your spending and sacrifice some things if you are serious about credit repair!

When obtaining student loans, make sure that you will be able to pay them back when all is said and done. If you go to an expensive school while you?re unsure of a career path, this can find you in deep debt down the road.

When you get your monthly bank statement, make sure to review it. Don?t forget to look for changes in the rates and fees that apply to your account. If you do not review these financial statements, you may be paying more in fees and interest than you know. This makes it especially important to read over each statement.

TIP! You can save money when purchasing bedding sheets and pillows by shopping at a discount store. This will allow you to save money and time throughout the year and still has the same quality as expensive brands.

Quantity purchases at grocery stores during a sale is only worthwhile if you are going to use all of the products you buy. Groceries go bad relatively quickly and buying more than you can realistically use is foolish. Have a good idea of how much you use of items, so that when you do find it on sale, you can buy the optimal amount.

Carefully assess your complicated relationship with money. If your goal is to improve your financial situation, you won?t be able to do so until you have a better understanding of why you spend and save the way you do. Write down your feelings about money, and consider your choices that you have made in the past. By doing this, you can move on and form better feelings about money.

Carry a little amount of cash for small purchases. You might not be able to use your credit card unless your purchase meets their required minimum.

TIP! It may be more beneficial for you to use credit cards than debit. Using a credit card on topical purchases like gas and food, as compared to big purchases is a good idea.

If you plan on getting a mortgage, you will want to have a credit score of at least 740. Borrowers with high credit scores are qualified for lower interest rates. Clean up any errors on your report and, if necessary, wait until your score improves. Don?t apply for a mortgage with bad credit unless it?s absolutely unavoidable.

If you?re planning to buy a vehicle or a home, you need to initially improve your score when it comes to credit. Try taking out some type of small loan and paying it back right away or using a couple credit cards and repaying them promptly. It is also important to exceed monthly minimum payments on all accounts.

If you want to make thoughtful decisions with your money, reduce your alcohol intake when you are out. Instead, drink water to keep your mind sharp for important decisions.

TIP! A great way to save money is to put an automatic withdrawal in place to transfer money from your checking account each month and deposit it into an interest-bearing savings account. It may be an inconvenience at first.

One way to improve your finances is to refuse to pay full price for anything. You might want to change from the usual brands you buy and only get them when you have a money off coupon. Don?t buy your favorite brand name detergent if you can save using another brand?s coupon.

As previously mentioned, taking control of your finances now can help you save for pricier purchases later. After reading this article you should have a better understanding on how you can make better decisions with your money

Elul in the IDF ? Educational Corps Visits ... - Yeshiva World News

As the military continues efforts to draft avreichim, the IDF continues to provide additional ammunition to those opposed to inducting them on the basis the IDF is simply not a suitable venue for avreichim.

Visitors from abroad who plan to join the IDF under the Gadna program were hosted by the military?s education corps which took their guests around the country to experience the land and our heritage. One of the stops was the Ethiopian Church in Jerusalem, where they remained for a cultural program and presentation, escorted by female soldiers.

Ladaat.net explains that while the youths are not officially soldiers, they are being hosted by the IDF and it is the IDF that decided to take them to a church. The visit to the church was at 21:00, after a visit earlier in the day to the Israeli Arab municipality of Abu Gosh, where they were exposed to ?Arab culture?. They also visited the Old City of Jerusalem that day.

When asked to comment on the stop at the Ethiopian Church, the IDF Spokesperson?s Office released a statement that soldiers are exposed to many cultural sites around the country, showing them various cultures, including visits to holy sites of a number of religions.

It should be pointed out that in line with IDF directives, a soldier cannot be compelled to enter a house of worship from other religions if that visit is for a non-operational purpose.

Govt Should Support Legislation to Reduce Risk of Skin Cancer

FIANNA F?il has published legislation to bring about stricter controls on the use of sunbeds.

Health Spokesperson Billy Kelleher says ?the use of sunbeds needs to be controlled to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.? 140,000 people in Ireland use sunbeds on a regular basis and of these, 20% are between the ages of 15-24 years.

?Skin cancer is now the most common type of cancer here.? The Irish Cancer Society has pointed out that the rate of skin cancer is rising, with over 8,000 new cases every year.?

?Children are at particular risk when using sunbeds.? Research has found that there is a 75% increase in the risk of coetaneous melanoma when people begin using sunbeds regularly before the age of 30 years.?? This is the most lethal form of skin cancer.?

Deputy Kelleher said: ?I will be bringing legislation before the D?il next month which would prohibit the use of sunbeds by anyone under 18 and I am urging TDs from all parties, and Independents, to the Bill.

?As well as implementing an age restriction other regulations are proposed in order to ensure that all people have access to the necessary information on the risks of sunbed use.?? Such regulations are already in place in Northern Ireland, and children south of the border should be similarly protected.?

In May 2011 Health Minister James Reilly told the D?il that legislation on sunbeds would be introduced into the Oireachtas before the end of 2011.? Deputy Kelleher said: ?We are introducing this Bill as the Minister has failed to achieve this objective and is showing a lack of urgency in dealing with the matter.

?I would urge all TDs, but particularly those in Fine Gael and Labour to support this legislation.? Reducing the risk that children are exposed to cancerous radiation is a major public health issue and must be taken seriously.?

Philadelphia Eagles Edge New England Patriots, 27-17, Despite Michael Vick Taking Big Hit (VIDEO)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ? Eagles coach Andy Reid figures Michael Vick will be ready for the regular season even if he misses Philadelphia's two remaining exhibition games.

At least he wouldn't get hurt again.

For his second consecutive game, Philadelphia's star quarterback lasted just six plays then went for X-rays, this time on his ribs. They were negative, just as they were on his left thumb 11 days earlier.

"I'd probably like to see him play a little bit more, but he's got enough experience," Reid said after the Eagles beat the New England Patriots 27-17 on Monday night. "We're not talking about a rookie, so I think he'd be OK."

Vick doesn't have much time to get over his soreness. Philadelphia plays Friday night at the Cleveland Browns.

"I'm not that concerned, other than he's hurt," Reid said. "I want to make sure he heals up and get him back in there. Hopefully, he doesn't get hurt again."

Vick was knocked down by linebacker Jermaine Cunningham after heaving a long pass in the first quarter. In a 24-23 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 9, he smacked his thumb on the helmet of center Jason Kelce.

In both games, rookie Nick Foles came off the bench to throw two touchdown passes. Last year's No. 2 quarterback, Mike Kafka, missed Monday night's game with a hand injury. Trent Edwards also played against the Patriots.

Foles, a third-round draft pick from Arizona, finished 18 for 28 for 217 yards and touchdown passes to Clay Harbor of 1 and 3 yards.

"He did a great job," running back LeSean McCoy said. "In the huddle he demanded respect. He put everybody in the right places at the right times."

Tom Brady sat out the game for the Patriots (No. 2 in the AP Pro32). The New England quarterback figures to play Friday night in the team's third preseason game, at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other healthy starters, including wide receivers Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd, tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, defensive lineman Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo, were held out of the game.

That gave players trying to make the team more time on the field.

"We got to look at a lot of players," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said, "evaluate them against a good football team."

One of them was Cunningham, a disappointment since being drafted in the second round in 2010. But he made an early impact when he hit Vick with about nine minutes gone in the game.

"That is just football," Cunningham said, "going out there and getting the person with the ball."

Vick went 1 for 3 for 5 yards with one run for another 5 yards. After Cunningham drove his helmet into Vick's left side, the quarterback went down, got up slowly then knelt on one knee. He was checked by medical personnel before going to the sideline under his own power.

"Mike's tough," McCoy said. "I kind of figured it would be all right, even though he took kind of a big blow."

The Eagles (No. 8) also have just three days between games. Vick had been expected to play at least a half on Monday night.

McCoy scored on a 1-yard run and Alex Henery kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 24-17 lead with 33 seconds left in the third quarter, and a 21-yarder that capped the scoring with 2:00 remaining.

For the Patriots (1-1), third-stringer Ryan Mallett completed 10 of 20 passes for 105 yards, including a 7-yard scoring pass to Alex Silvestro. Brian Hoyer was just 5 for 17 for 55 yards.

"Ryan's a very confident player, both him and Brian," wide receiver Deion Branch said, "but it's hard for them because they have to play behind Tom Brady."

Stephen Gostkowski kicked field goals of 51, 35 and 55 yards for the Patriots, who have scored just two preseason touchdowns.

Vick's departure didn't change much for the Patriots despite his scrambling ability, defensive end Chandler Jones said.

"It's the same offensive scheme they're running," he said.

Vick wasn't the only first-stringer knocked out of the game. Philadelphia cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and New England safety Patrick Chung went out in the first half with shoulder injuries.

The Patriots led 11-0 after Silvestro's touchdown 1:16 into the second quarter and a two-point conversion run by Shane Vereen. Then two lost fumbles within a span of just six plays led to two Eagles touchdowns.

Rookie Brandon Bolden muffed a punt, and McCoy scored three plays later. On the Patriots' second play after that, Hoyer fumbled when he was sacked by Phillip Hunt and Darryl Tapp recovered at the New England 12. Foles hit DeSean Jackson for an 11-yard completion on the next play before connecting with Harbor.

The Eagles took the lead for good, 21-14, with 3:58 gone in the third quarter on Harbor's second touchdown.

NOTES: Reid and defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins had a brief confrontation on the sideline in the first half. "He comes at you. He wants to get the best out of you," Jenkins said. "Obviously, that's not the way I should have handled it, but you just get emotional." ... A moment of silence was held before the game for Garrett Reid. The son of Philadelphia's coach was found dead Aug. 5 in his dorm room at Lehigh University, where he was helping the team's strength and conditioning coach during training camp.

Comedy legend Phyllis Diller dies at 95

By TODAY staff and wire

Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned humorist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95, her agent confirmed to NBC News.

"She was a true pioneer," Fred Wostbrock said. "The first female stand-up comedian. She paved the way for everybody. She paved the way for Joan Rivers, Ellen DeGeneres, Chelsea Handler. Phyllis was the first of the first. The first female to play Vegas ... she was on Broadway, she made movies.?She did it all."

Her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press, "She died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face."

According to E!, her son Perry found her. She is also survived by two daughters.

Diller suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999. The cause of her death has not been released.

"I'm beyond saddened by the death of Phyllis Diller," comedian Joan Rivers posted on Twitter. "We were friends - Melissa and I had a wonderful time with her at lunch just a month ago.

"The only tragedy is that Phyllis Diller was the last from an era that insisted a woman had to look funny in order to be funny," Rivers tweeted. "If she had started today, Phyllis could have stood there in Dior and Harry Winston and become the major star that she was. I adored her!"

"Phyllis Diller was not only a great comedienne but her memorable teaming with Bob Hope brought female comics to the forefront," said comedian Don Rickles. "Her life was filled with goodness and she deserved the respect she received. ?She will be missed."

Carson Entertainment Group

Phyllis Diller and her signature laugh on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, May 24, 1973.

She was a staple of nightclubs and television from the 1950s ? when female comics were rare indeed ? until her retirement in 2002. Diller built her stand-up act around the persona of the corner-cutting housewife ("I bury a lot of my ironing in the back yard") with bizarre looks, a wardrobe to match (by "Omar of Omaha") and a husband named "Fang."

Wrote Time magazine in 1961: "Onstage comes something that, by its own description, looks like a sackful of doorknobs. With hair dyed by Alcoa, pipe-cleaner limbs and knees just missing one another when the feet are wide apart, this is not Princess Volupine. It is Phyllis Diller, the poor man's Auntie Mame, only successful female among the New Wave comedians and one of the few women funny and tough enough to belt out a 'standup' act of one-line gags."

"I was one of those life-of-the-party types," Diller told The Associated Press in 1965. "You'll find them in every bridge club, at every country club. People invited me to parties only because they knew I would supply some laughs. They still do."

In 1992 she received the American Comedy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Diller didn't get into comedy until she was nearly 40, after her first husband, Sherwood Diller, prodded her for two years to give up a successful career as an advertising and radio writer. Through it all, she was also a busy mother.

"We had five kids at the time. I don't how he thought we'd handle that," she told the AP in 2006.

A Chicago Tribune columnist, describing her appearance at a nightspot there in 1958, noted she was from San Francisco, hailed her as "the weirdest, wildest yet" ? and made sure to mention her five youngsters.

Her husband managed her career until the couple's 25-year marriage fell apart in the 1960s. Shortly after her divorce she married entertainer Warde Donovan, but they separated within months.

Through both marriages and other relationships, the foibles of "Fang" remained an integral part of her act.

"Fang is permanent in the act, of course," she once said. "Don't confuse him with my real husbands. They're temporary."

She also appeared in movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" and "Eight on the Lam" with Bob Hope.

In 1966-67, she was the star of an ABC sitcom about a society family trying to stave off bankruptcy, "The Pruitts of Southampton." Gypsy Rose Lee played a nosy neighbor. In 1968, she was host of a short-lived variety series, "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show."

But standup comedy was her first love, and when she broke into the business in 1956 it was a field she had largely to herself because female comics weren't widely accepted then.

Although she could be serious during interviews, sooner or later a joke would pop out, often as not followed by that outrageous "AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!" laugh.

"It's my real laugh," she once said. "It's in the family. When I was a kid my father called me the laughing hyena."

Her looks were a frequent topic, and she did everything she could to accentuate them ? negatively. She wore outrageous fright wigs and deliberately shopped for stage shoes that made her legs look as skinny as possible.

"The older I get, the funnier I get," she said in 1961. "Think what I'll save in not having my face lifted."

She felt different about plastic surgery later, though, and her face, and other body parts, underwent a remarkable transformation. Efforts to be beautiful became a mainstay of her act.

Commenting in 1995 about the repainting of the Hollywood sign, she cracked, "It took 300 gallons, almost as much as I put on every morning." She said her home "used to be haunted, but the ghosts haven't been back since the night I tried on all my wigs."

She recovered from a 1999 heart attack with the help of a pacemaker, but finally retired in 2002, saying advancing age was making it too difficult for her to spend several weeks a year on the road.

"I have energy, but I don't have lasting energy," she told The Associated Press in 2006. "You have to know your limitations."

After retiring from standup, Diller continued to take occasional small parts in movies and TV shows ("Family Guy") and pursued painting as a serious hobby. She published her autobiography, "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse," in 2005. The 2006 film "Goodnight, We Love You" documented her career.

Her other books included "Phyllis Diller's Housekeeping Hints" and "Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual."

When she turned 90 in July 2007, she fractured a bone in her back and was forced to cancel a planned birthday appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." But it didn't stop her from wisecracking: "I still take the pill 'cause I don't want any more grandchildren."

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, in 1917, she married Sherwood Diller right out of school (Bluffton College) and was a housewife for several years before getting outside work.

She was working as an advertising writer for a radio station when a comedy turn at San Francisco's Purple Onion nightclub launched her toward stardom.

She made her network TV debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, "You Bet Your Life." (Diller, asked if she was married: "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years." Marx: "Really? Well, two more payments and it'll be all yours.")

She credited the self-help book, "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol, with giving her the courage to enter the business. For decades she would recommend it to aspiring entertainers, even buying it for them sometimes.

"Don't get me wrong, though," she said in a 1982 interview that threatened to turn serious. "I'm a comic. I don't deal with problems when I'm working."

"I want people to laugh."

Seven Cultural Habits to Harness Effective Business Innovation ...

From an innovation report released by Booz earlier this year, culture is key to innovation, as they surveyed almost 600 innovation leaders in companies around the world, large?and small, in every major industry sector, Culture matters, enormously, Studies have shown again and again that there may be no more critical source of business success or failure than a company?s culture --it trumps strategy and leadership. Companies whose strategic goals are clear, and whose cultures strongly support those goals, possess a huge advantage, especially for the areas such as innovation. ?

What is culture? Culture is how groups of people think and do things at organization. Culture is habit, culture is attitude, and culture is brand.

The author of ?Seven Habits of Highly Effective People?,? Stephen R. Covey passed away last month, his book has been sold more than 25 millions of copies in different languages, though the book is more about individual self-improvement, the concept and philosophy and seven habits of essential can also help business improve organizational habit, to experience more successful innovation journey.

?Two people can see the same thing, disagree, and yet both be right. It's not logical; it's psychological.????? --?Stephen R. Covey

Being proactive means people in the organization appreciate creativity, not just be compliant for survival; they are encouraged to be proactively questioning, connecting, collaborating and solving problems creatively. Because at some lagging businesses with conservative or negative culture encourage employees to be steadfast to the point that they?d become risk-averse, tolerant of mediocrity, and suspicious of outsider or new ideas.

For business leaders, it means they may push the new ideas proactively on how to leverage culture to drive innovation and increase business flexibility and agility, on the other side, they also cultivate the culture of ?Pull?: proactively seek team feedback, deeply understand the potential business success factor and obstacles, and shape the culture which can harvest innovation.

2. Begin with End in Mind

?We must look at the lens through we see the world, as well as the world we see, and that the lens itself shapes how we interpret the world.?? ??Stephen R. Covey

Innovation takes vision, vision may also help overcome culture inertia, as when everyone in the organization is collaborating to work towards the same goal; status quo, egos and silos no longer act as roadblocks, ?Knowledge and creativity are unleashed to produce outcomes.

Begin with end in mind also means: innovation is means to the end, not the end, the end is how to delight customers or improve employee satisfaction, with such noble goals in mind, the culture can become more resilient to adapt to changes, employees are more easier to get buy in, and vision may also convey the good story telling to inspire culture of innovation.?

3.??? Put First Things First? We see the world, not as it is, but as we are or, as we are conditioned to see it.? ??Stephen R. Covey

Culture is also about how to focus, focus on a few things matter for business, and business also have capabilities to do better than competitors, Isn't that what innovation is all about: do it better, differentiate yourself from your competition, run, grow and transform the business. The other thing to consider is it's not just about technology,? it's about people, the partnerships, the process and capability.

Put First Things First also means prioritizing, prioritizing the business goals which are most critical to your strategy; prioritizing the project investments which can help improve your key capabilities; prioritizing also means to follow 80/20 rule: to put 80% of resources into 20% activities which can produce the best business results; from change management perspective: emphasizing just a few will allow you to move the needle on culture change much more easily: such as selecting a few key behaviors to change, rather than trying to create a completely different culture overnight.

?When the trust account is high, communication is easy, instant, and effective.?? ??Stephen R. Covey

Culture is also about attitude, mutual trust is a good attitude to shape culture of innovation, to build up win-win relationship between employees and organization, business and customers; More specifically, it?s about building up the culture of "Reward success AND failure" - the logic here is that you reward people for trying new actions, and doubly reward them for successes. If you punish failure, you shut down innovation immediately.

Well, innovation is more about a process than a disruptive, enchanting new product these days. We need tolerate the failure, also make the effort on a "lessons learned" exercise to share. And, this entire innovation process area needs some oversight to make it not be a major business disruption. There are systematic ways to manage these actions effectively and to benefit business for long term.?

5.??? Empathy-Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood?Treat them all the same by treating them differently.????Stephen R. Covey,

Business leaders may think ideally that employees are paid to make a difference, the reality is that in many organizations, employees are trained to be compliance on the work being told to do, never to ask ?why? or think independently, as employees? creativity is not evaluated fairly in business?s talent agenda.

Empathy means business leaders and talent managers need deeply understand the value, the motivation and the habits of employees, and take customized talent solution to encourage innovative behaviors: as most of creative ideas or solutions will usually come from? the collective knowledge and experiences of the employees and the customers, not from the most powerful person or the smartest guy/gal in the room. And culture will be shaped by majority of people in the organization.

?Habit is the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do), and desire (want to do).????
--?Stephen R. Covey

The creative team is usually composed of all sorts of talents, with heterogeneous cognizance, strength and skills, especially those roadrunner people who want to understand the whole game, the whole business ? not just their job; people who think like businesspeople and owners, people who shows curiosity to ask why ? not like narrowly focused employees who follow rules and crave order only. ?

The culture as habit here will harness the intersection of collective knowledge, wisdoms, ?and aspiration, synergize creative disruption, enhance interdependent, collaborative and even codependent culture, and channel such energy, enthusiasm and ideas.

?

7.??? Sharpen the Saw?Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.??? ??Stephen R. Cove

The culture is habit, the good habit is also an attitude, one may need take most of time to sharpen the saws, such as prepare the team, understand the problem, get the right tool ready before jumping in approaching solutions or drawing conclusions.

? However, sharpening the saw is means to the end, not the end. Some businesses misunderstand the innovation purpose, may think innovation is implementing the latest and greatest technology, rather than using advances in technology or existing technology differently to provide innovative solutions for business now and in the future.

Like individual?s habit, cultural habit is hard to change, but it?s changeable, business leaders can approach changing an organization?s culture evolutionarily or disruptively, below are ten contemporary business cultures to catalyze innovation and drive business transformation.

1) Customer-Centric Culture

2) Analytics-Based Culture

3) Design Thinking Culture

4) Diversity-Enhanced Culture

5) Learning-Enabled Culture

6) Crowd-Sourcing Culture

7) Self-Managed Culture

8) Innovation-Amplified Culture

(9) Risk-Awareness & Tolerance Culture

(10) Cross-functional Collaborative Culture

Joe. My. God.: Nebraska Follows Jan Brewer's Lead

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman said yesterday that he too will deny driver's licenses and public benefits to young immigrants now eligible for deferred deportation status.
"They shouldn't be here if they're not here legally," Heineman told reporters. "That's the whole problem, and I've talked to you guys about this many, many times. When you don't secure the border, have a speedier technological way to legal immigration, and you won't address the issue that we've got 15 million illegal immigrants in the country right now, we end up with these situations."
Here's the statement from Heineman's official website:
?President Obama?s deferred action program to issue employment authorization documents to illegal immigrants does not make them legal citizens. The State of Nebraska will continue its practice of not issuing driver?s licenses, welfare benefits or other public benefits to illegal immigrants unless specifically authorized by Nebraska statute.?

Chinese city offers Hybrid subsidy to boost sales

New-car buyers in China are very price-sensitive, this attitude has caused hybrid sales to stagnate in the country, due to the high sticker price. The city of?Guangzhou is now offering price subsidies to try to boost sals of the cars.

By John Voelcker,?Guest blogger / August 17, 2012

In this Jan. 2010 file photo, a man looks at Honda Motor Co.'s Civic hybrid cars in front of the Japanese automaker's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.

Several years ago, you could get a Federal tax credit for buying a hybrid-electric vehicle.

That program has ended. Several manufacturers--Toyota,?Honda, and Ford among them--reached their cap of 60,000?hybrids?sold, and now hybrids represent 2 to 3 percent of the U.S. market without Federal incentives.

The goal of the program was to encourage sales of?hybrid?cars?at a time when consumers were wary of the new technology.

The same logic now applies to the current Federal tax credit (and other state, local, and corporate incentives of various kinds) for purchase of a plug-in car.

Now, in the Chinese city of Guangzhou is offering a hybrid-purchase subsidy of 10,000 yuan, or about $1,730.

New-car buyers in China are some of the most price-sensitive in the world, and?hybrids?have stalled in the market because of their high purchase prices.

And the country's national government offers only a 3,000-yuan ($472) subsidy for buying a hybrid--versus 50,000 yuan ($8,650) for a plug-in hybrid and 60,000 yuan ($10,380) for a pure battery-electric vehicle.

The goal of the local incentive is to boost sales of hybrid vehicles--which are, as?Automotive News China?notes, the flagship products of two automakers whose Chinese headquarters happen to be located in ... Guangzhou Province.

And adding to its push, the city will restrict the number of new-car registrations to 120,000 per year--but will reserve 10 percent of that number for "new energy vehicles," including hybrids, plug-ins, and electric cars.

In effect, then, hybrids are exempt from the restriction. That is likely to make them look a lot more attractive to Guangzhou buyers.

The subsidy doesn't totally make up for the price difference between a gasoline and hybrid model, which on the?Toyota Camry?is about 25,000 yuan.

But Honda and?Toyota?plan to start building hybrid components like battery packs and electric motors in China, and using them in locally assembled hybrid cars.

That could bring the cost differential down enough that with the local incentive, hybrid prices would be competitive.

Perhaps cars that can get around the registration limit in Guangzhou (and other Chinese cities, including Beijing) will become the equivalent of the much-desired plug-in cars now eligible for single-person travel in California's High Occupancy Vehicle lanes?

How to keep fast 802.11n Wi-Fi speeds by switching old iOS devices to Bluetooth connections

Not all iOS device Wi-Fi speeds are created equal. If your family has a mix of devices, like an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and iPod touch 3, it can be difficult to get maximum performance from your Wi-Fi router. The iPad can do fast 802.11n on the relatively clear 5GHz frequency. The iPhone 4S can do fast 802.11n, but only on the more cluttered 2.4GHz frequency. The iPod touch can only do slower 802.11b/g, and only on 2.4GHz. Even if you have a dual-band router, like Apple's latest AirPorts, even as the iPad zips along at 802.11n on 5Ghz, the slower iPod touch or even an iPhone 3GS will force the iPhone 4S down to 802.11b/g on 2.4GHz. So what's a geek to do?

If you have a desktop computer or server that stays on most of the time, you can set up Bluetooth tethering for your older devices, getting them off Wi-Fi and letting your 802.11n devices speed along unhindered. It's a bit of a workaround, and your Bluetooth-connected devices will be limited to 20mbs, but the slower slows will also give you faster fasts on your more modern devices. For me, that's a great tradeoff. If you agree, here's how to do it on OS X Mountain Lion.

On you iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Turn Bluetooth to On.

On your Mac:

  1. Launch System Preferences .
  2. Click on Network.
  3. Ensure that you have a Bluetooth PAN device in your left hand column. (If not, add one.)
  4. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  5. Click on Sharing.
  6. Enable Internet Sharing.
  7. Share your connection via Wi-Fi (or if wired, via ethernet)
  8. Enable the Bluetooth PAN option.
  9. Go back to the main System Preferences pane.
  10. Click on Bluetooth.
  11. Click on the + button to set up a new device
  12. Wait for the wizard to discover it, then pair your iPod touch.

Back on your iPod touch

  1. Launch Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Bluetooth.
  4. Tap on the newly created Bluetooth connection.

That's it. Now your older, slower devices have been offloaded onto Bluetooth, and your newer devices can blaze ahead on fast 802.11n!

If you have any other tips on handling multiple devices, and multiple generations of devices, for your family, let me know!

The Way To Enhance Your House The Smart Way

Don?t neglect your porch when doing home improvements. It is what is first seen by someone visiting your home. It will set the initial impression they have for your home. Make sure it is all neatly organized and, if possible, add a little style with outdoor decorations, such as flowers, varnish, lights, or furniture. This can increase the property value of your home.

Balance the blades on your ceiling fan. Keep your home quieter. Balancing can help fix a wobbly, noisy ceiling fan. Sometimes, simply adjusting the screws that attach the blades to the blade holders will do the trick and tighten the screws used to secure the blade holders to the motor as well. When adjusting these screws, give the fan a thorough cleaning. Dust and dirt can throw the balance of a ceiling fan out of whack.

Always turn off the water if you are going to work on your kitchen or bathroom. Find the shutoff valve before you do any work near pipes or other water supplies. These suggestions can help you prevent the flooding of your home.

Inspect your property to make sure there are no low area, particularly next to the foundation. Soil should be added to these areas to stop pooled water from eating away at your yard. If the water pools near your foundation, it can get into your home or cause rotting.

Before you undertake a home improvement project, you must familiarize yourself with the appropriate safety precautions. Following these precautions ensures that you and your property are protected at all times. Get all the information you can about proper power tool use and methods for your renovation before getting started. A front porch is a worthwhile place to invest your home improvement efforts. A porch is highly visible to the public and gives a lasting first impression to guest visiting your home. Make a point to put away any clutter and to install some beautiful new features, such as a light fixture or nice door. These things add value to a house.
