How you are a motivator for yourself will affect the motivator in your leadership of others.
Small business success and small business growth are about many things. But one of the most important is the motivator style of the owner. When you are running a small business or starting up your own business this can be a make or break proposition.
Why? Business conditions and circumstances will change. Usually how you are as a motivator will not. Sometimes all that has to change is how we motivate ourselves and others to have the success we desire.
Motivator Style-Compulsion
Whether you are a self-employed business owner, entrepreneur, solo professional or an individual your motivator style will determine your long-term success.
If you are compelled to do something by someone else the odds are that the relationship will neither be happy or fruitful for the long-term. You can enjoy some short-term success and satisfaction through compulsion. But, ultimately being a motivator by compelling others to do something is a form of slavery.
Compulsion has its place in motivation. But compulsion is about doing something that for the most part you don?t agree with or don?t see the value.
If you are a motivator who primarily uses compulsion then I can assure you that your life is short on happiness, satisfaction and trust.
As I said, compulsion has its place but use it wisely.
Motivator Style-Persuasion
This motivator style, unlike compulsion which can feel like a form of slavery, is the method of free men. Persuading requires an understanding of what makes people tick, and what motivates them, that requires a knowledge of human nature.
Great leaders possess this knowledge.
This motivator style requires more thought on your part. If you are motivating yourself through persuasion then you have to buy into a concept logically and emotionally. It can take more time. But, the long-term rewards with stability and satisfaction are immense.
The Best Motivator Is Usually The Best Leader
In a survey seventy psychologists were asked: ?What is the most essential thing for a supervisor to know about human nature?? Two-thirds said that motivation-an understanding of what makes people think, feel, and act as they do-is uppermost.
When you understand what motivates people, you have at your command the most powerful tool for dealing with them.
Seek to understand what motivates you and those around you or who work for you. When you do you will become a better motivator and a more influential leader.
