Some of the brightest minds in the arts and humanities industries?gathered together for a one-of-a-kind ceremony July 10. The National Endowment for the Arts?presented a group of recipients with the 2012?National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medal for excellence in different fields of the arts in the past year.
In total, 24 custom trophies were handed out. Most of them went to individual singers, dancers, poets, producers, scholars, filmmakers ? the list goes on and on ? as well as one award for the entire Washington Performing Arts Society.
Perhaps the most famous honoree was George Lucas, who received one of the recognition awards for his contributions to American film. As the driving force behind the "Star Wars"?franchise, Lucas is widely regarded as one of the most inventive minds of his generation and spurred an evolution of technology in cinema.
Other winners included Herb Alpert, the musician behind the Tijuana Brass movement, author Marilynne Robinson, and Robert B. Silvers, editor and co-founder of The New York Review of Books. While some of the recipients may be more in the public eye than others, all demonstrate a love of learning and arts that the National Endowment for the Arts supports.?
