(AP) ? She came into the world at two minutes before midnight, a tiny, wrinkled girl born into a struggling Manila family. On Monday, she became a symbol of the world's population reaching 7 billion people and all the worries that entails for the planet's future.

Danica May Camacho, born in a crowded public hospital, was welcomed with a chocolate cake marked "7B Philippines" and a gift certificate for free shoes. There were bursts of photographers' flashes, and speeches by local officials.

The celebrations, though, reflected symbolism more than demography.

Amid the millions of births and deaths around the world each day, it is impossible to pinpoint the arrival of the globe's 7 billionth occupant. But the U.N. chose Monday to mark the day with a string of festivities worldwide, and a series of symbolic 7-billionth babies being born.

Danica was the first, arriving at Manila's Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital at two minutes before midnight Sunday ? but doctors say that was close enough to count for a Monday birthday.

"She looks so lovely," the mother, Camille Galura, whispered as she cradled the 2.5-kilo (5.5-pound) baby, who was born about a month premature.

The baby was the second for Galura and her partner, Florante Camacho, a driver who supports the family on a tiny salary driving a 'jeepney,' ubiquitous four-wheel drive vehicles used by many poor and working-class Filipinos.

Dr. Eric Tayag of the Philippines' Department of Health said later that the birth came with a warning.

"Seven billion is a number we should think about deeply," he said.

"We should really focus on the question of whether there will be food, clean water, shelter, education and a decent life for every child," he said. "If the answer is 'no,' it would be better for people to look at easing this population explosion."

In the Philippines, much of the population question revolves around birth control. The government backs a program that includes artificial birth control. The powerful Roman Catholic church, though, vehemently opposes contraception.

Camacho, a Catholic like her husband, said she was aware of the church's position but had decided to begin using a birth control device.

"The number of homeless children I see on the streets keeps multiplying," Camacho said. "When I see them, I'm bothered because I eat and maybe they don't."

Demographers say it took until 1804 for the world to reach its first billion people, and a century more until it hit 2 billion in 1927. The twentieth century, though, saw things begin to cascade: 3 billion in 1959; 4 billion in 1974; 5 billion in 1987; 6 billion in 1998.

The U.N. estimates the world's population will reach 8 billion by 2025 and 10 billion by 2083. But the numbers could vary widely, depending on everything from life expectancy to access to birth control to infant mortality rates.

In Uttar Pradesh, India ? the most populous state in the world's second-most populous country ? officials said Monday they would be appointing seven girls born Monday to symbolize the 7 billion.

India, which struggles with a deeply held preference for sons and a skewed sex ratio because of millions of aborted female fetuses, is using the day to highlight that issue.

"It would be a fitting moment if the 7 billionth baby is a girl born in rural India," said Dr Madhu Gupta, an Uttar Pradesh gynecologist. "It would help in bringing the global focus back on girls, who are subject to inequality and bias."

According to U.S. government estimates, India has 893 girls for every 1,000 boys at birth, compared with 955 girls per 1,000 boys in the United States.

On Monday, the chosen Indian babies were being born at the government-run Community Health Center in the town of Mall, on the outskirts of the Uttar Pradesh capital of Lucknow.

Six babies were born from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday. Four were boys.

Meanwhile China, which at 1.34 billion people is the world's most populous nation, said it would stand by its one-child policy, a set of restrictions launched three decades ago limiting most urban families to one child and most rural families to two.

"Overpopulation remains one of the major challenges to social and economic development," Li Bin, director of the State Population and Family Planning Commission, told the official Xinhua News Agency. He said the population of China would hit 1.45 billion in 2020.

While the Beijing government says its strict family planning policy has helped propel the country's rapidly growing economy, it has also brought many problems. Soon, demographers say, there won't be enough young Chinese to support its enormous elderly population. China, like India, also has a highly skewed sex ratio, with aid groups saying sex-selective abortions have resulted in an estimated 43 million fewer girls than there should be, given the overall population.

India, with 1.2 billion people, is expected to overtake China around 2030 when the Indian population reaches an estimated 1.6 billion.

Riviera Beach church provides haven for victims of human trafficking

They've read about it in school. They've seen documentaries about it. They've witnessed it on neighborhood streets.

Riviera Beach residents say human trafficking ? the modern-day enslaving of human beings for labor or sexual purposes ? is a problem in Florida, and that Project Unite could help to put an end to it.

"We see this all the time," Vontavious Robinson, 22, said. "I've seen prostitutes. I don't know if they're being forced to do that."

Project Unite, a group formed to combat human trafficking, had its first forum recently at St. George's Episcopal Church.

Its leaders said it was created to raise awareness of the issue. The church on West 22nd Street will provide a safe haven for local victims of trafficking where they can come for food and counseling.

"South Florida is a hotbed of human trafficking," said Jeff Goldberg, assistant logistics manager of Palm Beach County's Emergency Management Department.

Every 30 minutes a person is trafficked into the United States, he said. And 73 percent of victims are younger than 25.

Florida is third in the country, behind California and New York, in terms of the number of cases, he said. Victims are either trafficked locally or are brought in from places such as China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil and Costa Rica.

Victims are often promised a better life in Florida but really it's just "a better lie," said Brandy Macaluso, coordinator of victim's services for the Coalition of Independent Living Options.

Sometimes women are told they can work as housekeepers and then when they arrive in the country they are thrown on the streets to sell themselves, she said.

Sheila Acevedo, Project Unite's chairwoman, said with the church's aid, she helped three women and two children who were human trafficking victims to safety. One was a 15-year-old who was often arrested on prostitution charges while she was living with a man in a trailer park.

Project Unite is led by the Chi Zeta Zeta chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, the Palm Beach County Coalition on Human Trafficking, and the Soroptimist International of Palm Beach.

Members of Project Unite hope victims will come forward more often now and that word will spread on the street about the group ? eventually minimizing the number of human trafficking victims. And some residents believe it could.

"It will help," Robinson said. "If they keep pushing it."

Drugmaker Merck & Co. said Friday that its third-quarter profit soared from results a year ago that were weighed down by huge acquisition and legal charges.

The latest results beat Wall Street estimates, and Merck shares rose 84 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $35.15 in morning trading.

"Three consecutive quarters of top and bottom line growth demonstrate out ability to consistently perform while at the same time making the strategic investments necessary for the future," CEO Kenneth Frazier said in a statement.

The maker of diabetes drug Januvia and Singulair for asthma and allergies said net income climbed to $1.69 billion, or 55 cents per share, the July-September period. That's up from $342 million, or 11 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding acquisition and restructuring charges in the latest quarter, adjusted income 94 cents per share. The charges were mostly related to its November 2009 purchase of fellow drugmaker Schering-Plough Corp. for $49 billion.

The adjusted earnings were 3 cents per share higher than the 91 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet. The analysts typically exclude one-time items from their estimates.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $12.02 billion from $11.12 billion. The analysts expected revenue of $11.62 billion. Merck said revenue was boosted about 5 percent by favorable currency exchange rates.

The company raised the lower end of its 2011 forecast, to a new range of $3.72 to $3.76 per share, or $2.03 to $2.20 per share excluding one-time items. Analysts expect $3.73 per share for the year.

Prescription drug sales totaled $10.35 billion, led by strong sales of Singulair, Januvia and combination diabetes drug Janumet, the HIV drug Isentress and the Gardasil and Zostavax vaccines.

Singulair, Merck's top drug, saw sales rise 10 percent to $1.34 billion. Its U.S. patent expires next August, when generic competition will quickly reduce sales ? the key reason for Merck's latest round of job cuts.

Januvia and Janumet sales both jumped more than 40 percent, to $846 million and $350 million, respectively. They have quickly risen to be among the most popular and fastest-growing diabetes pills.

Sales of biologic immune disorder drug Remicade fell 15 percent to $561 million, because of revised terms of Merck's revenue-sharing deal on the drug with Johnson & Johnson. The new terms took effect in the third quarter, following settlement of a dispute in arbitration.

Sales of animal health products jumped 20 percent to $826 million. Consumer health sales edged up 3 percent to $421 million.

Courtney Love's Daughter Frances Bean Engaged?

Courtney Love's Daughter Frances Bean Engaged?

Frances Bean Cobain, the only daughter of the late Kurt Cobain and his widow Courtney Love, is reportedly headed down the aisle.

The princess of grunge royalty is only 19, but she may be planning to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Isaiah Silva, The OC Weekly reports. Cobain has been dating the musician (he's the frontman of California folk-rock band, The Rambles) for more than a year, and according to sources around the OC, as well as Facebook, the two are engaged.

A few weeks ago, the two reportedly changed their relationship status on Facebook to "engaged," but they've since removed the relationship marker. The couple (who use fake names on the ubiquitous social media site) continue to make references to their engagement in their Facebook posts, like Cobain writing "Getting to spend the rest of my life loving my best friend makes me the luckiest woman in the world" and Silva referring to her as his "fiance."

Maybe like her parents, Cobain would like to start a family early. She recently purchased a $1.825 million home near Los Angeles' Runyon Canyon with her inheritance and clearly seems to be in love.

But before the well wishes start pouring in, The OC Weekly blog brings up one eerie fact (with photographs to prove their claim): Cobain's rocker beau looks remarkably like the Nirvana lead singer. Is that creepy -- or strangely fitting for a young woman who was only 20 months old when her father committed suicide?

Chicago Grocery Store Expansions to Eliminate Food Deserts, Create 2,000 Jobs (ContributorNetwork)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and first lady Michelle Obama announced several major grocery store chains will be opening 36 grocery stores in neighborhoods around Chicago. The stores will help eliminate "food deserts" in the city and will also help create more than 2,000 new jobs for Chicagoans.

Supervalu, Roundy's Supermarkets, Wal-Mart and Aldi's have agreed to open 17 new locations. Additionally, Walgreens has also decided to expand 19 of its locations to offer fresh food. With this announcement, here are facts about food deserts and the steps Chicago and Mayor Emanuel have taken to reduce this problem:

* According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable foods that make up a healthy diet like vegetables, fruits, milk and whole grains.

* More than 23 million people live in food deserts, notes the Department of Agriculture. These areas often include urban neighborhoods and rural towns.

* Residing in a food desert can lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease due to the lack of affordable and healthy food options.

* The Chicago Sun-Times reported Chicago's food desert has decreased by 40 percent over the past five years, from about 632,974 people to 384,954 people.

* Of the nearly 384,000 people, about 124,000 are children and Chicago's food desert lies in predominantly African-American communities.

* Yahoo! News reported that in mid-June, Mayor Emanuel met with several CEOs from some of the nation's biggest grocery chains to discuss eliminating food deserts in the city.

* Food deserts in the city cover the neighborhoods of North Lawndale, Chatham, Douglas, Englewood, Roseland and West Pullman.

* Tackling the problem of food deserts has long been a major goal of Mayor Emanuel, who, during his election campaign, spoke about his plans to eliminate the issue, according to CBS Local.

* The mayor's initial plan involved engaging small and local grocery stories, encouraging communities to plant gardens, and developing public-private partnerships.

* Emanuel's and Obama's recent announcement includes piloting five new farmers markets on the city's west side over the next two years.

* Obama is also encouraging other mayors to follow Chicago's lead to end food deserts in their city's by bringing healthy and affordable food options to underserved residents, reported Bloomberg Businessweek.

Rachel Bogart provides an in-depth look at current environmental issues and local Chicago news stories. As a college student from the Chicago suburbs pursuing two science degrees, she applies her knowledge and passion to both topics to garner further public awareness.

Study questions outsourcing traffic camera systems (AP)

WASHINGTON ? One out of every five Americans lives in a community that pays a for-profit company to install and operate cameras that record traffic violations. A pro-consumer group says that practice could end up putting profits ahead of safety and accuracy.

Some contracts require cities to share revenue with camera vendors on a per-ticket basis or through other formulas. Suffolk County, N.Y., for example, diverts half of the revenue from its red-light camera program to its vendor, according to the report being released Thursday by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

Another type of agreement ? conditional "cost-neutral" contracts ? also contain provisions that link payments to the number of tickets issued, although the payments are capped, the report said. Under these contracts, local governments pay a monthly fee to a camera vendor. If ticket revenues fail to cover the vendor's fee in any given month, cities may delay payments. That gives vendors an incentive to ensure a minimum number of citations are issued, the report said.

As many as 700 communities, with a combined total of more than 60 million people, outsource their street and highway camera systems, the report found.

While vendors capture violations, police or other local officials approve which violations are issued tickets. Some contracts penalize cities if they don't approve enough tickets, effectively setting a ticket quota, the report said. That can undermine the authority of local officials to decide when to issue tickets, it said.

"Automated traffic ticketing tends to be governed by contracts that focus more on profits than safety," said Phineas Baxandall, the report's co-author.

Baxandall acknowledged that cash-strapped communities have a financial incentive to maximize the number of citations they issue even when they don't use a vendor. But local governments are also accountable to voters, whereas private vendors aren't, he said.

Red-light cameras have been effective at saving lives by deterring motorists from running lights, said Anne Fleming, a spokeswoman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

An analysis by the institute showed they saved 159 lives from 2004 to 2008 in the 14 biggest U.S. cities with cameras. If cameras had been operating during that period in all cities with populations of more than 200,000, 815 fewer people would have died, the institute estimated.

But Baxandall said research on the effectiveness of the cameras is unsettled. Some studies, he said, show motorists who are aware of the cameras sometimes cause injuries by slamming on their brakes to avoid being caught running a light.

Some red-light camera vendors have created and bankrolled organizations like the National Coalition for Safer Roads that appear to be grassroots civic groups, but which mainly promote greater use of red-light cameras, the report said.

David Kelly, president of the safer roads coalition, said the flaw in the research group's study is that vendors don't create traffic violations ? motorists do.

Vendors "aren't creating a market. The people running the red lights are creating the market," he said.

"We have saved lives," said Kelly, a former acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under President George W. Bush. "Do we want to have more people dying at intersections because they are running red lights, or do we want to do something about it?"

The move to privatize red-light camera and speed camera enforcement is part of a larger wave of outsourcing of government services, Kelly said.

"We have private industry all across traffic safety," he said.

The traffic enforcement industry has amassed significant political clout that it uses to shape traffic safety regulation nationwide, the report said. Camera vendors are aggressively lobbying to expand authorization for private traffic law enforcement to more states, and are marketing enforcement systems to more communities, it said.

About half of states have authorized the use of red-light cameras.

Camera vendors employed nearly 40 lobbyists this year in Florida whose agenda included killing a bill that would have required communities to adopt longer yellow light times to increase intersection safety and killing a separate bill that would have banned red-light camera systems, the report said.

Kelly said the research group also lobbies.

DETROIT Henry Ford Hospital is the first in the country to offer skin transplant surgery as part of its treatment portfolio for patients with the skin disease vitiligo.

The surgery, known as melanocyte-keratinocyte transplantation or MKTP, involves using skin cells taken from normally pigmented areas of the body and transferring them to the damaged area of skin to restore pigmentation. It is performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure.

Patients who underwent the surgery as part of a 2010 research study at Henry Ford achieved striking results.

MKTP is a promising treatment option for vitiligo, which causes the skin to lose color and develop white patches that vary in size and location. It affects about one in every 200 people in the United States, and is more noticeable in people with darker skin. The late Michael Jackson and actor Jon Hamm of Mad Men are two notable celebrities to have vitiligo.

Henry Ford senior staff dermatologist Iltefat Hamzavi, M.D., says MKTP may be the most effective treatment to date for a segment of the more than 2 million patients living with vitiligo and the emotional side effects that accompany it.

"MKTP gives new hope to these patients," Dr. Hamzavi says. "First, it restores pigmentation to the skin; second, it gives patients' self-confidence a boost."

"You no longer have to be self-conscious about it," says Adil Siddiqui, 23, an electrical engineer and a resident of Canton who underwent MKTP for restoring pigment to patches around his lips. A topical cream initially prescribed had modest effectiveness.

MKTP is offered at Henry Ford's Vitiligo Treatment Center, which is part of the Multicultural Dermatology Clinic in the Department of Dermatology. Patients may call 313-916-1618 to make an appointment or visit http://www.henryford.com/vitiligo for more information.

Currently, the procedure is not covered by insurance and the cost is dependent on the size of the treatment area. For an area less than 25 cubic centimeters, or about less than one inch by one inch, the cost is $3,500. Cost for an area of 25-100 cubic centimeters is $4,000. Cost includes the procedure, office visits and post-surgical dressings.

Dr. Hamzavi is among three board-certified dermatologists trained to perform MKTP. They use the same technique developed by MKTP pioneer Sanjeev Mulekar, M.D., of the National Vitiligo Center in Saudi Arabia.

MKTP is among multiple treatment options available at Henry Ford for treating vitiligo, which currently has no cure. These include topical medications, light therapy, depigmentation and skin grafting. Ideal candidates for MKTP are adults and children whose vitiligo patches have not increased in size and no new patches formed in at least six months.

The results of Henry Ford's research study, published online in August in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, illustrate the potential of MKTP as a viable treatment option. Twenty-three patients regained on average 45 percent of their natural skin color. Ten patients with a specific type of vitiligo regained on average 65 percent of their skin color.

Dr. Hamzavi also says MKTP is "well-suited" for treating patients with burn-related injuries.

"MKTP provides a pigment reservoir where there is none and burn patients are ideal for this surgery because their immune system will not reject the transplanted skin cells," he says.

During MKTP, melanocyte cells, which produce pigment in the skin, hair and eyes, are harvested from an area of healthy skin and separated to make a skin cell mixture. This mixture then is applied to the treatment area and covered with a specially developed adhesive biologic dressing. MKTP allows dermatologists to treat the affected area up to 10 times the area of donor skin, Dr. Hamzavi says.

Pigmentation starts to return about two months after surgery and may take up to six months. For patients with fair skin, pigmentation may take longer. Some patients may require additional surgery or other treatment options to enhance their results.

The iPod turns 10, celebrates a decade of destroying physical media

Evolution of the iPod
It's hard to believe, but it's been exactly ten years since the iPod was first unveiled, ultimately changing the music industry forever. The iPod wasn't the first, it wasn't the smallest, it didn't have the largest hard drive, but it did have an iconic style and simple to use interface that led march away from CDs. When the history of Apple is written the iPod (perhaps more than the iMac, OS X or the iPhone) will be credited with helping spearhead the company's second coming. Over the years the music player has seen countless iterations and redesigns, and an expansion of the product line to include smaller devices and touch screens -- but for most it's the scroll wheel and white earbuds that define the iPod. Sure, what is now called the iPod classic hasn't seen a serious update since about 2007, but it still holds a special place in our hearts, especially for those of us who don't measure their music collection in a few dozen iTunes downloads.

NICT, JVC Kenwood team up for wall-sized 3D HD display, lets in your face advertising get literal

Been holding out hope for a real-life holodeck? Well, looks like Japan's got wall number one out of four already covered. We kid, we kid. That Trekkie tech future's still a ways off, but recent prototypes like this 200-inch auto-stereoscopic 3D screen are bringing that illusive reality one step closer to our living rooms. Exhibited during CEATEC 2011, this 1920 x 1080 full HD display plays images at 60fps using an array of 57 projectors, and offers up viewing angles of 13 degrees. What does all of that mean for you? Well, the setup gives viewers a limited ability to peer around projected objects, so long as they stay within a 1.3m (about 4-inches) area. It's yet another fruit of the collaboration between the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and JVC Kenwood, except this one's headed for the realm of outdoor digital advertising. Home theater aficionados looking for a virtual entertainment solution can always opt for Sony's HMD, but that kind of defeats the glasses-free allure.

Newt Gingrich Proposes Space Prizes to Return to the Moon (ContributorNetwork)

According to the Space Politics blog, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a candidate for president, had some things to say about current plans by NASA to send astronaut explorers beyond low Earth orbit.

To be it succinctly, Gingrich is opposed to those plans and, as president, would scrap them. Instead he proposes to "privatize" space flight and to institute a series of prize competitions to open up the high frontier of space. As an example, Gingrich made the claim that taking five to 10 percent of NASA's budget for the past 10 years and using it to finance a lunar prize would have placed 20 to 30 people going to or on the moon.

What are space prizes?

Space prize competitions allocates a certain sum of money to be awarded to a group that either demonstrates a desired technology or accomplishes a certain feat related to space travel. The most familiar example of this is the Ansari X Prize that awarded the Scaled Composites company for flying the first piloted space ship in successive sub orbital flights $10 million in 2004. This feat has sparked the development of suborbital space tourism which, while still in development, is scheduled to begin in a number of months.

Are there Other Space Prizes?

The big one currently going on is the Google Lunar X Prize that will award $30 million in prizes to the first privately funded teams to land a robot on the moon, have it traverse the lunar surface at least 500 meters, and send back video, images, and data to Earth. The deadline for the 26 teams participating is 2015.

Is NASA Currently Doing Prizes?

NASA has a small prize program called Centennial Challenges that awards cash to teams that demonstrate some form of space technology. Thus far competitions to demonstrate lunar regolith excavation, simulated lunar landers, a flexible astronaut glove, and extracting oxygen from lunar soil have been won. Current competitions include power beaming, tethers, a sample return rocket, nano satellites, and a rover capable to operating at night under stored power.

What about Gingrich and Space Prizes?

Gingrich is a long term advocate of space prizes. He is an author of the Mars Prize, which would award a private group $20 billion to send a human to Mars and return him or her safely to the Earth. Gingrich believes that prizes rather than the traditional Apollo project model favored by NASA is a better, more cost effective away to open up space. It is likely that his proposed lunar prize would be financed at several billions of dollars.

What are the Objections to Space Prizes?

Smaller space prizes, especially if privately finances, are not controversial. Prizes on the scale that Gingrich proposes are problematic. Multi-billion dollar prizes, barring the sudden generosity of a Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, would have to be financed by the United States government. It is difficult to see how Congress, especially in these difficult times, would appropriate upwards to $20 billion in one fell swoop and then just leave it in an escrow account for a prize winner to collect. Furthermore, competitors in a lunar or Mars prize would have to raise their funds in the private market. Even with a huge prize available (which might be taken away at any time as political whims change) this also may be problematic

Mark R. Whittington is the author of Children of Apollo and The Last Moonwalker. He has written on space subjects for a variety of periodicals, including The Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post, USA Today, the L.A. Times and The Weekly Standard.

APNewsBreak: UK prison loses set of keys

(AP) ? The inmates are locked up, but where's the key?

A Birmingham Prison officer's set of keys has gone missing and now every lock at one of the country's largest prisons must now be replaced, a union official said Friday.

Terry Fullerton of the Prison Officers Association said he's been told the set went missing a couple days ago and an investigation is under way.

"Nobody knows how the keys have gone missing," he told The Associated Press. "They were there at one particular key check, then they were gone."

Fullerton described the security implications as "vast," saying the keys could have been stolen and copied.

"You wouldn't want someone coming into possession of a set of security keys," he said.

He said its not the first time he's heard of keys going missing, but he's learned it will take three weeks for all of the locks ? including cell locks ? to be replaced. It wasn't immediately clear how much it would cost to replace the locks.

Birmingham Prison became the first U.K. prison to be privatized when security firm G4S took it over this month.

G4S said it doesn't comment on security matters and would not elaborate on the situation beyond a brief statement.

"All prisons have well-established contingency plans to deal with incidents of this nature," the company said in a statement. "There is no risk to public safety."

A spokeswoman declined to specify the details of what happened and would not be drawn on if the inmates are currently locked into their cells or in public areas.

Birmingham Prison houses around 1,400 "category B" prisoners ? the second most serious class of offender.

G4S would not say how many prison officers work in the facility, exactly what keys had been lost and what those keys unlocked.

It was also not immediately clear if the keys had been found.

"Contingency measures are being followed," G4S said.

Obama adviser slams Romney on health care plan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama's top political adviser is giving GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney credit for something he'd rather not be thanked for ? inspiring the national health care overhaul.

David Axelrod says the Obama health plan was largely modeled on the system Romney shepherded into place as Massachusetts governor.

Romney's Republican rivals have latched onto his state's health plan as a main point of criticism. Romney says the plan was specific to Massachusetts ? not meant to work on a national scale.

But Axelrod, speaking Wednesday on CBS' "Early Show," says Romney is switching positions now that he's running for president. He says it appears Romney "has no core to him." If Romney wins the GOP nomination, such criticism might help Obama deflect GOP attacks on his health care plan.

Galaxy Nexus signup page includes seven US carriers, endless speculation

Samsung and Google still haven't officially revealed which US carriers will be getting the Galaxy Nexus next month -- even though Verizon has been leaked, is shown in the official trailer (included after the break, look at 0:22), and there was a quickly-retracted Facebook confirmation earlier today. Now, the official signup page for release info on Samsung's site allows users to show their carrier preference between AT&T, Cellular South, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. It's hardly a confirmation this latest Android phone will ever be available on all of them, but even if you're not on Big Red, we won't kill your Ice Cream Sandwich dreams yet.

Stocks turn positive despite Europe worries

By Chuck Mikolajczak, Reuters

Stocks rose Tuesday, led by financials, as better-than-expected bank earnings overshadowed new worries about the crisis in Europe fueled by a warning over France's credit rating.

The three major indexes spent the early part of the session in negative territory before banks led the way higher. The KBW bank index advanced nearly 4 percent.

Volatility was still evident as U.S. stocks suffered their worst loss in two weeks on Monday on the heels of its first two-week rally since July.

Bank of America Corp jumped 5.8 percent to $6.38 after it reported a third-quarter profit boosted by accounting gains and asset sales.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc added 1.9 percent to $98.78 after reporting a rare loss but said it was moving to cut costs, including employee pay.

State Street Corp climbed 6.6 percent to $36.11 after its net income rose, lifted by tax benefits and double-digit gains from servicing and investment management fees.

"Part of the reason financials are acting better than people were largely expecting ... is because though earnings are by historic standards very, very disappointing, they are not as bad as a lot of the naysayers were expecting them to be," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"There was some genuine panic the banks, the financials, were going to start reporting earnings that were going to just undermine any shred of confidence and any kind of sustainable rebound and really the earnings haven't done that."

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 66.26 points, or 0.58 percent, to 11,463.26. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 10.79 points, or 0.90 percent, to 1,211.65. The Nasdaq Composite Indexclimbed 18.94 points, or 0.72 percent, to 2,633.86.

But International Business Machines Corpfell about nearly 5 percent to $177.40 after Big Blue's earnings beat failed to stem worries about a slowdown in technology spending.

Gains were kept in check after Moody's cautioned it may slap a negative outlook on France's Aaa credit rating in the next three months if costs from helping to bail out banks and other euro zone members stretch its budget too thin.

Another negative was data showing China's growth slowed in the third quarter to its weakest pace since early 2009. Gross domestic product rose 9.1 percent in the quarter from a year earlier, but was down from 9.5 percent in the previous period.

"China slowing and now Moody's is possibly warning on France, add that to the list of the European countries," said John Papa, President of Diversified Planning Strategies in Caldwell, New Jersey.

"The news is not great, that is dragging down the markets, which you have to expect is going to happen."

DALLAS Oct. 20, 2011 A recent UT Southwestern Medical Center study found that estrogen regulates energy expenditure, appetite and body weight, while insufficient estrogen receptors in specific parts of the brain may lead to obesity.

"Estrogen has a profound effect on metabolism," said Dr. Deborah Clegg, associate professor of internal medicine and senior author of the study published Oct. 5 in Cell Metabolism. "We hadn't previously thought of sex hormones as being critical regulators of food intake and body weight."

The mouse study is the first to show that estrogen, acting through two hypothalamic neural centers in the brain, keeps female body weight in check by regulating hunger and energy expenditure. Female mice lacking estrogen receptor alpha a molecule that sends estrogen signals to neurons in those parts of the brain became obese and developed related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Similar results were not seen in male mice, although researchers suspect other unknown estrogen receptor sites in the brain play a similar role in regulating metabolism for males as well.

Estrogen receptors are located throughout the body, but researchers found two specific populations of estrogen receptors that appear to regulate energy balance for female mice.

The findings are potentially important for millions of postmenopausal women, many of whom have decided against hormonal replacement therapy. The study could lead to new hormonal replacement therapies in which estrogen is delivered to specific parts of the brain that regulate body weight, thereby avoiding the risks associated with full-body estrogen delivery, such as breast cancer and stroke.

Doctors stopped routinely recommending long-term estrogen therapy for menopausal women in 2002 when a Women's Health Initiative study showed the hormone also led to increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

"The role of estrogen in postmenopausal women continues to remain uncertain," Dr. Clegg said. "Current research is focused on the timing and the type of estrogen supplementation that would be most beneficial to women. Our findings further support a role for estrogens in regulating body weight and energy expenditure, suggesting a benefit of estrogen supplementation in postmenopausal women."

Other UT Southwestern researchers involved in the study included lead author Dr. Yong Xu, a former postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Clegg's lab; Dr. Carol Elias, assistant professor of internal medicine; and Dr. Joel Elmquist, professor of internal medicine.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Samsung Series 3 (NP305V5A)

The Samsung Series 3 (NP305V5A) ($599.98 list at Staples) may look luxurious, but its AMD Llano APU's performance and battery life is anything but. It has little else to recommend itself, unfortunately, in the way of features?aside from its integrated Bluetooth technology, a spacious 750GB hard drive, and its AMD Radeon HD 6520G GPU, which gives it an edge on the gaming grid over Intel's integrated graphics. Better laptops, in terms of performance and features, can be had for $20 less in the Gateway NV55S05u ($579.99 list, 4 stars) or $40 more in the Asus U56E-BBL5 ($649.99 list, 4 stars).

Design
The Series 3 (NP305V5A)'s design is a huge part of its appeal. Its sharp corners make it stand out from the usual rounded edges of laptops like the HP Probook 6465b ($730 direct, 4 stars). Its lid has a dark brown brushed aluminum texture that makes it look like table-top wood, and a silver band frames the lid, further adding to its elegance. The whole package weighs in at 5.25 pounds (1.24 inches at its thickest point), which puts in on the lighter side of the 15-inch laptop space, compared with the Gateway NV55S05u (5.6 pounds) and Asus U56E-BBL5 (5.5 pounds). In general, toting around anything heavier than 4 pounds on a day-to-day basis isn't the best for your back, unless you have a backpack with great support or use a wheeled bag.

Its 15.6-inch screen is perfect for multi-taskers who like to work with two windows side-by-side. The screen displays in 1,366-by-768?a standard resolution found in most all laptops at this price. The speakers offered a fairly average listening experience: Bass was low, and audio didn't go up terribly high, but it was enough to satisfy two or three people crowding around a laptop watching a movie or some trailers. Above the screen is a webcam for video chatting and taking pictures. The full-size keyboard is in the chiclet style, with a half-sized numeric keypad off to the right side. I found the typing experience to be satisfactory as far as laptops go, and the navigating experience offered from the matte multi-touchpad was smooth. The mouse buttons were also easy to click and didn't make much noise.

Features
Compared with other budget systems, like the Asus U56E-BBL5, the Series 3 (NP305V5A) is limited when it comes to features. It has the usual offerings: three USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA video, a 4-in-1 card reader (SD, SDXC, MMC), audio and mic jacks, DVD-RW drive, and an Ethernet jack. The only outlier is its integrated Bluetooth technology, which allows you to connect wireless peripherals like headsets, mice, and keyboards. The Asus U56E-BBL5, on the other hand, features WiDi 2.0, a technology that allows you to wirelessly stream your computer's contents to your HDTV in 1080p (provided you have a Netgear Push2TV receiver, a $99 option). It also has an integrated 3G wireless broadband technology called WiMAX. The Series 3 (NP305V5A) only has 802.11n Wi-Fi.

The Series 3 (NP305V5A)'s 750GB, 5,400rpm hard drive is the largest capacity you can get at this price in a laptop. It's bigger than the 640GB hard drive found in the Asus U56E-BBL5 and Gateway NV55S05u. The hard drive is also filled with a number of pre-installed programs, better known as "bloatware." There's an eMusic app, Amazon reader, Bing bar, Skype, and a bunch of Samsung's own proprietary software. Personally, I'm of the mind that a new PC should feel like a fresh start, not some company's commercial playground.

Performance
Samsung Series 3 (NP305V5A) Llano APUs are the most powerful chipsets in AMD's arsenal. But when the Series 3 (NP305V5A)'s quad-core 1.6GHz A6 3410MXP chip and 4GB of RAM was pitted against the Intel Core i3 CPU?the lowest end of Intel's Core i-series?found in the Gateway NV77H05u ($629.99 list, 3 stars) it didn't quite step up. The Gateway NV77H05u (2,004) beat the Series 3 (NP305V5A) (1,516) in PCMark 7 by 488 points?a significant margin. The Series 3 (NP305V5A) managed to get through our Handbrake video encoding test in 3 minutes 18 seconds, 55 seconds slower than the Gateway NV77H05u and 1:23 behind the Asus U56E-BBL5 (a Core i5 system). In day-to-day tasks, the Series 3 (NP305V5A) will give you enough power to perform, but you'll likely start to see it slow sooner than its Core i5 counterparts.

The Series 3 (NP305V5A)'s AMD Llano APU does have an advantage when it comes to 3D gaming, as its graphics processor (AMD Radeon HD 6520G) sits on the same die as the CPU. In Crysis (DirectX 10) it managed 30 frames per second (fps) and 21.7fps in Lost Planet 2 (DirectX 9) on Medium quality settings at 1,024-by-768 resolution. However, it was beat out by the Gateway NV55S05u with its AMD Radeon HD 6620G GPU that was able to score 36.7fps on Crysis and 38fps in Lost Planet 2. At these frame rates, you'll be able to play most low-end titles easily (i.e. Limbo, Team Fortress 2), and mid-range titles like Starcraft 2 and Portal 2, provided you make some adjustments to the settings.

Its 48Wh (6-cell) battery only managed to last 3 hour 16 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 battery test. The Gateway NV55S054u lasted longer (4:54), and the Asus U56E-BBL5's larger 8-cell 74Wh battery garnered a total battery time of 7:34.

The Series 3 (NP305V5A) may have a luxurious exterior, but its parts are lackluster. If Web browsing and day-to-day tasks, with some gaming on the side, are what you have in mind, then the Gateway NV55S05u will give you a more advanced Llano APU and save you $20 on your overall purchase. However, the Editors' Choice Asus U56E-BBL5 (only $40 more) is equipped with a Core i5 CPU that will last for a few years before it start to become noticeably slower, and will chew through more CPU-intensive tasks at a quicker pace.
