Broadcom: 802.11ac chipsets already in preproduction, preparing router invasion in summer
Broadcom might have unveiled a bevy of 802.11ac chipsets back at CES, however when it came to availability the chipmaker played more than coy as to when they'd sashay their way out of developmental labs and into the hands of actual consumers. Fast-forward to MWC and the chipmaker's isn't nearly as shy, proclaiming its future WiFi solutions were "beyond the sampling phase" and now in preproduction. Also of note, was the estimate that finished products (read: the ones you can buy) containing this tech would go on sale by mid-2012. With competitor, Qualcomm, also previewing its 802.11ac concoction, could this year possibly shape up to golden era of speedy wireless transfers? Bring it on, we say.

Justin Bieber's Top 18 Moments Kicks Off!

Oh, Baby! Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we're counting down his best moments so far starting with #18 to #14.

<P>As <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> gears up for his 18th birthday this week, we at MTV News decided we'd help our guy celebrate the milestone by looking back on <i>18</i> of his greatest moments so far. Whether he's dazzling us with killer performances, topping the box office <i>and</i> the <i>Billboard</i> charts or just dropping yet another memorable music video, the Biebs has kept us talking since he first rose to super fame way back in 2009. Of course, actually narrowing down all of those moments was no easy task. Our list had to include career successes as well as personal achievements, and the pop star has had no shortage of either. But we put our heads together for the Beliebers. We'll celebrate every day leading up to the final reveal on Justin's big day, Thursday, March 1. What will be the #1 moment? You'll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:743868.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>18. The 2012 Oscars</b></big><br> No, "Never Say Never" wasn't nominated for an Oscar, but Justin still managed to snag a few headlines at this year's show. Bieber popped up in the show's <a href="/news/articles/1679954/oscars-2012-justin-bieber-opening.jhtml">opener with host Billy Crystal</a> in a sketch that paid homage to Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris." Dressed up in formal wear, Bieber shared what seemed to be longing glances with Crystal. The singer also showed his flair for comedy, giving more proof that he's a true triple threat. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:626820.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>17. Bieber's Love Life</b></big><br> Teen superstar <a href="/news/articles/1679812/oscar-couples-justin-bieber-selena-gomez.jhtml">Bieber dating Disney princess Selena Gomez</a> has sparked lots of headlines. Whether they're walking arm-in-arm down a red carpet or sharing some alone time at, yes, the <a href="/news/articles/1671535/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-staples-center-date.jhtml">Staples Center for a "Titanic"</a> screening, this twosome is pretty adorable. Selena has always been the mature one in this relationship &#8212; she turns 20 in July &#8212; so it might take some pressure off having Justin join in her adulthood. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:496216.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>16. Bieber's Bowling Party</b></big><br> Just as he was getting ready to drop his 2010 album <i>My World 2.0,</i> Nick Cannon <a href="/news/articles/1634559/justin-bieber-beats-nick-cannon-at-bowling-during-my-world-20-party.jhtml">challenged Justin to a bowling match</a>. MTV News was on hand at Lucky Strike in New York City as the Biebs tried to beat Cannon. Tons of adoring fans also showed up to cheer on the floppy-haired star. In the end, despite Nick's big pre-game talk, it was Bieber who won. And Beliebers can probably take credit for helping him to victory! </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:685409.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>15. Justin and his Johnson Hit 2011 VMAs</b></big><br> When <a href="/news/articles/1669881/vmas-justin-bieber-selena-gomez.jhtml">Bieber walked the VMA red carpet</a> last year, he brought along a very special date. No, not Selena, who was MTV's red-carpet co-host, but his pet snake, Johnson. (The metaphor was not lost on anyone.) Justin actually seemed to creep out his lady when he unveiled the creepy crawler, and we couldn't stop talking about it. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:667570.id:1680063" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>14. Someday Perfume Launch</b></big><br> Nobody launches a fragrance like Bieber: The Canadian singer took over Macy's Herald Square in NYC last June to debut his <a href="/news/articles/1666360/justin-bieber-someday-perfume.jhtml">first perfume, Someday</a>. The iconic department store was filled mostly with female fans hoping to get spritzed by the star, and we found out he cares a lot about how they smell. "I just think that what we decided to do &#8212; making the fragrance for females, not getting a cologne for males &#8212; I said it before and I'll say it again, I'm more concerned about how girls smell 'cause I'm a guy," Justin explained to MTV News. "And I know what smells good and I know what I like, so girls should know if [I like] it, then other guys are going to like it." <i>Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page!</i> <b>Stick with MTV News all week as we count down <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. On Thursday, March 1 &#8212; the teen star's official big day &#8212; we will reveal the #1 greatest moment in his career so far. Plus, stay tuned for even more Bieber as we celebrate the milestone!</b></p>

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:18 p.m. ET Feb. 28, 2012

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Carlos Tevez has played for Manchester City for the first time in five months, taking part in a reserve team match after ending his feud with the club.

The Argentina striker played the first half for City's elite development side Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to Preston in a league for reserve teams.

The 28-year-old Tevez recently returned from an unauthorized three-month break in South America.

City manager Roberto Mancini accepted Tevez's apology for his conduct since refusing to warm up during September's Champions League match against Bayern Munich and is prepared to restore him to the first team.

Habits Are The New Viral: Why Startups Must Be Behavior Experts

2386473Face it; you?re hooked. It?s your uncontrollable urge to check for email notifications on your phone. It?s your compulsion to visit Facebook or Twitter for just a few minutes, but somehow find yourself still scrolling after an hour. It?s the fact that if I recommended a book to purchase, your mind would flash ?Amazon? like a gaudy neon sign. If habits are defined as repeated and automatic behaviors, then technology has wired your brain so you behave exactly the way it wants you to. In an online world of ever-increasing distractions, habits matter. In fact, the economic value of web businesses increasingly depends on the strength of the habitual behavior of their users. These habits ultimately will be a deciding factor in what separates startup winners and losers.

Samsung announces Galaxy Note 10.1 at MWC (update: hands-on photos!)

Samsung's announced another 10.1-inch tablet to join its burgeoning collection of slates. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is an S-Pen toting variant of the similarly sized-and-named Galaxy Tab. It's running Touchwiz-infused ICS on a 1.4GHz dual-core CPU with 1GB of RAM, but here's the answer to the question on everyone's lips: nope, you can't use it as a phone. Sadly you'll only have access to HSPA+, WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0, dashing our hopes of using this as our primary cellphone to annoy people on the train. The 10.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) display is nestled opposite a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and beside a 2-megapixel one for video conferencing. S-Pen specific features include S Note for scrawling text, Shape Match and Formula Match (to digitize images and mathematical formulae) -- but more importantly is the ability to use Adobe's new Photoshop Touch and Ideas, which will both come pre-installed.

If you'd rather use the slate as one of the world's largest sat-navs, you'll be relieved to know it's packing both GPS and Glonass. For the businesspersons of you out there, there's Exchange ActiveSync, on-device encryption, Juniper Junos Pulse and Cisco VPNs. It'll come in 16, 32 and 64GB variations, with a microSD slot for you to add up to a further 32GBs into the mix. It's clear that Samsung's bisecting its tablet business: purely touch-driven devices will now be branded as a "Tab" and anything with a stylus S-Pen will be suffixed with "Note." Pricing and availability are currently unspecified, but we'll do our best to shanghai that information out of a passing company rep when we see one.

Update: We've added a gallery of hands-on photos just below.

Correct protein folding

Monday, February 27, 2012

The gold standard for nanotechnology is nature's own proteins. These biomolecular nanomachines ? macromolecules forged from peptide chains of amino acids - are able to fold themselves into a dazzling multitude of shapes and forms that enable them to carry out an equally dazzling multitude of functions fundamental to life. As important as protein folding is to virtually all biological systems, the mechanisms behind this process have remained a mystery. The fog, however, is being lifted.

A team of researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), using the exceptionally bright and powerful x-ray beams of the Advanced Light Source, have determined the crystal structure of a critical control element within chaperonin, the protein complex responsible for the correct folding of other proteins. The incorrect or "misfolding" of proteins has been linked to many diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and some forms of cancer.

"We identified, for the first time, a region within group II chaperonins we call the nucleotide-sensing loop, which detects the presence of the ATP molecules that fuel the chaperonin folding motion," says Paul Adams, a bioengineer with Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and leading authority on x-ray crystallography who led this work. ""We knew that ATP hydrolysis is important for promoting protein folding, but we did not know how ATP activity was sensed and communicated."

Adams is the corresponding author of a paper in The EMBO Journal that describes this study, which was performed in collaboration with colleagues at MIT and Stanford. The paper is titled "Mechanism of nucleotide sensing in group II Chaperonins." Co-authoring this paper were Jose Pereira, Corie Ralston, Nicholai Douglas, Ramya Kumar, Tom Lopez, Ryan McAndrew, Kelly Knee, Jonathan King and Judith Frydman.

Chaperonins promote the proper folding of newly translated proteins and proteins that have been stress-denatured ? meaning they've lost their structure - by encapsulating them inside a protective chamber formed from two rings of molecular complexes stacked back-to-back. There are two classes of chaperonins, group I found in prokaryotes; and group II found in eukaryotes. Much of the basic architecture has been evolutionarily preserved across these two classes but they do differ in how the protective chamber is opened to accept proteins and closed to fold them. Whereas group I chaperonins require a detachable ring-shaped molecular lid to open and close the chamber, group II chaperonins have a built-in lid.

"We obtained crystal structures at sufficient resolution to allow us to examine, in detail, the effects that changes in nucleotides states have on ATP binding and hydrolysis in group II chaperonins," Adams says. "From these structures we see that the nucleotide-sensing loop monitors ATP binding sites for changes and communicates this information throughout the chaperonin. Functional analysis further suggests that the nucleotide-sensing loop region uses this information to control the rate of ATP binding and hydrolysis, which in turn controls the timing of the protein folding reaction."

The double-ring chaperonin complex features multiple subunits that are grouped into three domains - apical, intermediate and equatorial. For group II chaperonins, the closing of the lid for protein-folding causes all three domains to rotate as a single rigid body, resulting in conformational changes to the chamber that enable the proteins within to be folded. The synchronized rotation of the chaperonin domains is dependent upon the communication to all the subunits that is provided by the nucleotide-sensing loop. In identifying the nucleotide-sensing loop and its controlling role in group II chaperonin protein-folding, Adams and his colleagues may have opened a new avenue by which modified protein-folding activities could engineered.

"The strong relationship between incorrectly folded proteins and pathological states is well documented," Adams says. "Since ATP hydrolysis is required for protein folding, it could be possible to engineer a nucleotide-sensing loop that promotes slower or faster protein folding activity in a given chaperonin. This could, for example, be used to increase the protein folding activity of human chaperonin, or perhaps reduce the cellular accumulation of misfolded proteins that can cause disease and other problems."

A key factor that enabled Adams and his colleagues to solve the three-dimensional crystal structure of the nucleotide sensing loop and determine its pivotal role in the protein folding of group II chaperonins was the unique protein crystallography capabilities of the Berkeley Center for Structural Biology. The BCSB operates five protein crystallography beamlines for Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS), a DOE Office of Science national user facility for synchrotron radiation, and the first of the world's third generation light sources. For this particular study, Adams and his colleagues used ALS beamlines 8.2.1 and 8.2.2, which are powered by a superconducting bending magnetic to yield higher energy x-rays that are optimized for the study of single crystals of biological molecules.

In this study, Adams and his colleagues studied an archaeon chaperonin. In their followup research, they will apply what they have learned to study the chaperonin known as TRiC, which is the human chaperonin.

"We believe that chaperonins have evolved to work on specific substrates and that the rates of protein folding may vary greatly between chaperonins in different organisms," Adams says. "The structural and biochemical identification of the changes related to ATP hydrolysis provides important insights into the complex puzzle of protein folding for each type of chaperonin."

Is Google Planning to Bring Android Onto PC?

Google recently filed for a patent which shows they are planning to bring the Android onto PC.

According to the patent overview of PatentlyApple?by Jack Purcher, certain applications and operating systems such as Android operating system have been designed around a touchscreen user interface. However, it may be beneficial to allow such applications and operating systems to be implemented on traditional devices like a desktop, netbook or laptop or a trackpad.

The process of directing takes place in such a way that the trackpad operations will be directly mapped to the touchscreen actions. For instance, if the user wants to deliver the response onto the desired pointer location on the monitor screen, then he/she will have to just tap a single finger on the trackpad.

"The user may use multi-touch actions on the trackpad" says Google.

If the user wants to perform tasks such as dragging or scrolling, then he/she will have to tap two fingers on the trackpad and steadily move them together which will show the movement on the display screen. By doing this one can directly map the actions onto the touch screen.

Google has an immense power with its capabilities in terms of the applications and operating system that can bring Android to the PC. And it will definitely be a pleasure to operate Android-powered PCs.

A new principle of war: &#39;Understanding&#39; must take its rightful place ...

Reflecting revered assumptions and long-standing paradigms, The Principles of War are a list of tenets enshrined since 1949 in the Army?s Field Manual 3-0 ?Operations? and more recently in other service and joint doctrines. These foundations ? Mass, Maneuver, Unity of Command, and the rest ? have stood largely pat for a half-century. That reflects their enduring utility, yet is prima facie evidence of a need to seriously re-examine them, particularly as conflicts in the ancient battlefields of Mesopotamia and Afghanistan wind down.

The post-Cold War era has generated new vulnerabilities and new forms of adversaries and combat applications. A decade of combat and complex operations has pulled up the roots of strategic thought and operational habits framed in response to a monolithic threat. That threat no longer exists, but it is imprinted into the U.S. military culture. The challenge is adapting to new demands, new threats and an evolving character of conflict. We must discard what is no longer relevant and reinforce everything that is immutable or enduring.

The following is offered for consideration by the joint war-fighting community: a new principle for the list, and indeed one to be placed atop the rest:

?Understanding: Craft strategy and operations upon a detailed understanding of the nature of military conflict and the specific context (cultural, social, political and geographic) in which military force is to be introduced and applied.

STRATEGY, ANTHROPOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY

Strategist Bernard Brodie once observed that ?good strategy presumes good anthropology and good sociology.? Fundamentally, war involves an iterative competition between peoples whose behavior patterns will be a result of a complex combination of factors. Our national security community has experts who monitor and study the strategic and military culture of adversarial states and assess an opponent?s military capabilities. During the Cold War, we created a cadre of experts in Russian history, language and culture. After the Cold War, we lost that expertise. We became what Gen. Anthony Zinni, the former Central Command commander, calls ?order of battle oriented? ? focused on quantifying a known opponent and laying out his capabilities in neat templates. Then-Maj. Gen. Michael Flynn?s 2010 critique of intelligence operations in Afghanistan reflects the consequences of this mentality.

We need to gain a deep and nuanced understanding of any conflict we are about to embark on and acquire as thorough a grasp of the nature of the adversary as possible. This includes becoming well-informed about the culture of the adversarial social and political systems.

This will help us in the future, due to the nature of what Harvard?s Samuel Huntington calls ?fault line? wars. These are the sorts of culturally intensive, ethnic or religiously divisive conflicts that occur between different cultures or civilizations. Such wars are protracted, violent and highly contagious. Unfortunately, these are exactly the kinds of conflicts we will be involved in for the next few decades (although not the only ones). Fault-line wars place a premium on an in-depth knowledge base of the other component of a nation?s strategic culture ? its societal culture. This is not a new thought, as Michael Howard stressed many years ago, ?Wars are not tactical exercises writ large. They are ? conflicts of societies, and they can be fully understood only if one understands the nature of the society fighting them. The roots of victory or defeat often have to be sought far from the battlefield, in political, social, or economic factors.?

Nor is this news to those familiar with the Marine Corps? classic ?Small Wars Manual,? which notes, ?The campaign plan and strategy must be adapted to the character of the people encountered.?

It is impossible for either policymakers or the military to succeed without an intimate appreciation of the local culture, and one can see this in America?s past interventions. Our lack of understanding of both the nature of the Vietnamese civil war and the weaknesses of the South Vietnamese government was instrumental to our debacle there. Likewise, our misunderstanding of the ethnic divisions in Lebanon, where our support for the Christian-dominated government risked our Marines and sailors in Beirut. Likewise, the American intervention in Somalia in 1992-93 was undermined by a limited understanding of the clan framework in that impoverished country.

The same problems worked against our efforts in Iraq for a long time. We have made progress at the operational and tactical levels over the past decade, and need to assess and institutionalize the frameworks, educational base and organizational improvements to preserve and increase the ability of American forces to think in terms of culture and see things from the perspective of others.

One can see the need for cultural intelligence and understanding in almost every phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Numerous stories and anecdotes have emerged about the pervasiveness of the effects of culture and the additive complexity it brought to the battle space.

?We are absolutely newcomers to this environment,? said one young officer. ?It is so foreign to us. You couldn?t pick a place in the world that would be more foreign to most Americans than Iraq.?

?The complexity of their culture has been overwhelming,? said another.

Others express surprise at the importance of religion: ?It was nothing I was prepared for.?

Efforts to instill some grasp of culture in professional military education programs and pre-deployment training programs were ultimately made. Additionally, initiatives like the Human Terrain Team were undertaken. The results of these efforts are mixed, per Flynn?s negative assessment a few years ago. It is clear that we have made progress but less clear that we have locked in the right changes or that we have yet recognized best practices to retain despite coming budget cuts.

PREPARING FUTURE WARRIORS

What is perfectly clear is the need to master foreign cultures and embrace a deeper level of understanding, if strategic and operational effectiveness matters at all. This is true at the summit of policymaking in Washington as well as in the dusty markets of Marjah or Kandahar.

?What will matter to the military forces of the United States in the 21st century,? notes American historian Williamson Murray, ?is how well American leaders at all levels understand their opponents: their history, their culture, their political framework, their religion, and even their languages.?

It should be clear by this point that understanding stands primus inter pares when it comes to the principles of war. Without a deep understanding of the nature of war and the societies involved, defining an achievable objective or end state is an exercise in delusion. Without a deep grasp of history and war, it is impossible to design a campaign for an offensive or to retain the initiative after the first clash of arms. Good planning requires branches and alternatives, not a fixed path?

What&#39;s Dr Bates Methodology to Improve Vision Naturally | Articles ...

Doctor Bates is often associated as proponent of eye exercises. It is partially true, but Doctor Bates found out far more than about advantages of eye exercise. Doctor Bates was New York eye surgeon who worked in the middle of the 20th century and did in depth research on how to improve eye vision without glasses . Bates became famous because of his study of ways how to improve eye vision without wearing glasses. He was overwhelmed when he noticed that many of his patients kept coming back to him for even stronger glasses, although wearing specs was considered the way to enhance eye vision.

Doctor Bates decided to do a study on the topic. He found out that poor eye vision is due to mental and physical stress to eyes as well as weakening of the eye muscles. Wearing specs doesn?t train eye muscles. Also, incapacity to reduce straining, leads to deteriorating eye vision.

Dr. Bates concluded that blurred vision is caused mostly by bad eyesight habits and straining because of mental stress.

He found out that more often than not, psychological stress is a core reason of deteriorating eye vision. Stress leads to straining and only by learning the best way to relax mind and eyes one can be certain that eye vision stays healthy. As well as managing strain, it is useful to do regular eye exercises to bolster and relax eye muscles. In this manner, eyes get stronger, more flexible and eye vision improves naturally.

He became strong supporter of eye exercises and learning healthy vision habits. Dr Bates revealed a couple of studies and scientific papers on the subject and had many followers. Unfortunately, today the mainstream eye doctors are not big proponents of Bates strategy. One explanation is it is too easy and takes some time before eyes regain healthy vision. It is way easier to give subscription to glasses or suggest lasik surgery to see instant results. Unfortunately, wearing specs won?t improve vision, but over the time will require stronger and stronger ones.

Those that know lots more about Doctor Bates methodology realize it is very easy to maintain a 20/20 eye vision till the old age once one learns the proper way to relax eyes and avoid straining.

Next, learn more about Dr. Bates method at vision without glasses
study. Also, find more about natural eyesight improvement strategies you can do every day.

Avalanches hit Indian Kashmir; 16 soldiers killed

A Kashmiri villager slips as he clears snow off the roof of his house, which is under construction, in Gagangeri, some 80 Kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Srinagar, India, Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012. Heavy snowfall across Kashmir valley has prompted authorities to issue an avalanche warning for most areas lying close to the mountains, according to a news agency. (AP) ? Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday.

Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border.

Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas.

Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said.

Dawar, in the frontier Gurez region, remains cut off from the rest of Kashmir for nearly five months every year as heavy snowfall and rains block road links to the region.

Army rescue teams from other parts of the region were trying to reach the Dawar army camp but were delayed by heavy fog, snow and cloud cover, Grewal said.

Later Thursday, an army helicopter managed to airdrop a special team of the military rescuers and two sniffer dogs to help search, Grewal said.

At least 25 army vehicles and 17 barracks were damaged in the avalanche, said Amir Ali, a state government disaster management official.

Ali warned of more avalanches across mountainous parts of Indian Kashmir.

Another two state government officials, on duty in Sonamarg, were missing, Ali said.

Avalanches and landslides are common in the disputed Himalayan region. Last month, an avalanche killed seven soldiers as they were clearing an army supply road. In 2010, 17 soldiers died when a wall of snow and ice slammed into the army's High Altitude Warfare School in Kashmir.

Strategic planning made simple | The Next Us

I love strategic planning.

When done well, at the right time, it?s useful and clarifying.

When done poorly, or at the wrong time, it?s soul-sucking. Instead of accelerating your business, it can grind it to a halt.

A quick web search will turn up many strategic planning resources, all describing the same elephant. Thankfully there is a general consensus about what a strategic plan is and does.

Some of those readily-available frameworks are quite detailed, and in certain contexts, those details can be valuable. My tools however tend to be simple.

Here is a format and conceptual process for strategic planning that I?ve found works well for businesses of all kinds.

The why

A strategic plan helps an organization optimize its efficiency and impact.

The when

It?s usually created when:

  • You realize your business does not have a strategic plan.
  • You are reaching the end of the previous strategic plan.
  • You must react to major external or internal shifts.
  • You are choosing proactively to grow or change the business.

The what

Here is what a final strategic plan includes, and how the pieces knit together:

Strategic plan simple format

It can be shared on a wall, in a Google Doc, or via a sophisticated online dashboard or task management system.?It might have deeper details, but the basic template is the same for all organizations, in any situation.

?

Step 1?Start with Vision

Vision?is where most organizations lose the way.

Vision tells everybody internally where you?re headed.

Vision is not a lofty and vague aspiration or a pleasant fantasy about the future.

It is either:

  • An ambitious, measurable, time-delimited goal
  • A short description of the disruptive innovation you intend to create
  • An honest answer to the question: ?What do you want??

If a vision is not articulated, then a secret one is at work. Examples: ?Preserve the internal culture at all costs? or ?Just get through the year.?

If your vision is primarily about your internal systems, not your external impact, then you have a hobby, not a business.

?

Step 2?Define Objectives

Choose 4-7 objectives?really, no more?that support your vision,?capturing all the major functions of your organization: current services, operations, marketing, culture, experiments, etc.

Make sure each objective is measurable, meaningful, and doable. The time horizon will vary depending on your unique situation.

Then, assign a clear owner for each objective. This usually provokes some epiphanies regarding your organizational structure.

?

Step 3?Choose Strategies

Identify 1-5 strategies that you will use to accomplish each objective.

Strategies ideally are not simple tasks that can be accomplished in an afternoon. They should be complex initiatives that will last for at least a few months.

Examples: ?Hire the agency Walk into Mordor to design and implement our PR campaign,? or ?Launch a new app-based version of our proprietary content, targeted at golfers aged 45-65,? or ?Overhaul our board and advisory board composition to match our new long-term vision.?

Assign an owner to each strategy. And then:

For each strategy you must define not only how you will know if the strategy was executed but also how you will know if it was successful.

If you skip this very important step, your strategic plan turns into an endless list of to-dos.?Some strategies will fail, and those failures will be educational. If all of your strategies are sure to succeed, you are likely being too naive or too conservative about your business growth.

?

Step 4?Develop the Plan

Identify the key activities and milestones needed to accomplish and assess the strategies.?The plan can be to whatever level of detail and in whatever format makes sense for your business. Typically, it?s a Gannt chart.

The how

The shell above is the one I would use and populate for all organizations. Larger organizations will require deeper and more sophisticated content?for example, calling out critical success factors for each objective?but the template is the same regardless.

Most of the important variations you see between different strategic planning approaches are not about the outline, but the process used to populate it. One reason for this is that many organizations use strategic planning as a mechanism to align people and generate insights.

Here it?s important not to a follow someone else?s methodology blindly. Enrolling and aligning people and coming up with great new ideas can take place as part of strategic planning, or separately.?I?ve seen highly successful strategic plans that were imposed by a CEO with little input or collaboration, and ones built iteratively through complex, multi-stakeholder engagement models that completely failed.

Generally speaking, there is no process that will compensate for a weak leader, a shortage of good ideas, a lack of useful and actionable information, or a failure to implement usable management tools.

The ?how? can vary not only based on organization?s size and maturity but also its type. The Wikimedia Foundation has modeled how to do strategic planning with large networks, with a resulting direction that?s both ?bottom-up and outside-in.? The Transition Town movement has articulated a great process for strategic planning with communities.?I?ve written about these different organization types before: they allocate and optimize power in ways that are very different from traditional, closed organizations. And a growing number of organizations these days are hybrids?e.g., a private company that is porous to a network that it incubates, or a public institution that is inter-dependent with a larger community.

Optimizing your strategic planning process for efficiency, inclusiveness, consensus, or emergence might make sense or it might not depending on your circumstances.

When in doubt, look for an experienced facilitator who is aware of multiple different methods who can make a custom and context-appropriate recommendation.

Officials: US drones monitoring clashes in Syria

The Syrian army has continued to bombard at least half a dozen cities, despite the United Nations calling for an end to the violence. ITN's Bill Neely reports.

?

By msnbc.com staff, NBC News and news services

"A good number" of unmanned U.S. military and intelligence drones are operating in the skies over Syria, monitoring the Syrian military's attacks against opposition forces and innocent civilians alike, U.S. defense officials tell NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski.

The officials said this surveillance is not in preparation for U.S. military intervention. Rather, the Obama administration hopes to use the overhead visual evidence and intercepts of Syrian government and military communications in an effort to "make the case for a widespread international response," the officials told Miklaszewski.

Unlike in Libya, there has been no widespread international support for military intervention in the country. And while there has been some discussion among White House, State Dept. and Pentagon officials about possible humanitarian missions, U.S. officials fear that those missions could not be carried out without endangering those involved and would almost certainly draw the United States into a military role in Syria.

On Friday, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces?renewed bombardment of the opposition stronghold of Homs and attacked rebels in Deraa, in blatant disregard of a U.N. resolution.

Demonstrations against Assad were reported by activists in several cities across Syria, including the capital Damascus and the commercial hub Aleppo, after Friday Muslim prayers, despite the threat of violence from security forces.

In a show of support for Assad, China's vice foreign minister, Zhai Jun, arrived in Damascus after the U.N. General Assembly passed a resolution telling the increasingly isolated president to halt the crackdown and surrender power.

China, along with Russia, had voted against the motion and says Syria must be allowed to resolve its problems without being dictated terms by foreign powers.

Related:?Russia, China oppose UN General Assembly resolution on Syria

Its stance on Syria will "withstand the test of history," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in Beijing.

Zhai said before leaving for Damascus: "China does not approve of the use of force to interfere in Syria or the forceful pushing of a so-called regime change."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Friday that the UN General Assembly resolution showed an overwhelming consensus that Syria's bloody crackdown must end.

"So we will keep working to pressure and isolate the regime, to support the opposition and to provide relief to the people of Syria," Clinton said at a press conference.

Even as Zhai landed in Damascus, government forces pummeled opposition-held areas of the strategic western city of Homs, now under fire for two weeks.

In Deraa, a city on the Jordanian border where the revolt erupted nearly a year ago, explosions and machine gun fire echoed through districts under attack by troops, residents said.

Army tanks rolled through the streets of the conflict-torn city, even as regime forces categorically denied using them.

"We will not use them and we will win," a Syrian general in Deraa told ITN's Bill Neely.?

The military has also opened a new offensive in Hama, a city with a bloody history of resistance to Assad's late father.

A doctor told Neely that a growing number of revolutionary troops are suffering head and neck wounds, proof that they are facing a well-trained enemy -- in many cases, defectors from their own ranks.

Protests continued in spite of the attacks, and one activist told Neely that Assad was doomed.

"One hundred percent he will go," the activist said.

The U.N. assembly vote in New York on Thursday showed Assad had few foreign sympathizers left. The vote went 137-12 in favour with 17 abstentions on a resolution endorsing an Arab League plan that calls for him to step down.

The assembly vote, unlike Security Council resolutions, has no legal force but it reflected global revulsion at the ferocity of the crackdown in which security forces have killed several thousand civilians since last March.

Assad portrays the opposition as foreign-backed terrorists and has promised reforms while rejecting the idea of surrendering power.

On Wednesday he announced a referendum on a draft constitution on Feb. 26 followed by a multi-party parliamentary election, a move swiftly dismissed the opposition and the West.

Assad told a visiting Mauritanian official on Friday that political reforms "have to march parallel with returning security and stability and protecting citizens," the state news agency said.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and other world leaders have decried the violence and are considering steps to get humanitarian aid to civilians suffering in embattled areas.

But the West has ruled out military intervention of the type that helped topple Moammar Gadhafi in Libya last year and must pin its hopes on a bringing together a fragmented opposition movement which includes activists inside Syria, armed rebels and politicians in exile.?

The military intervention in Libya was possible due to widespread support within NATO and among the Arab Gulf States and also because of the lack of support for Gadhafi, which is not the case for Syria.

Reuters contributed to this report.?
