10 Green Cars We Can't Wait To See On The Road

????????????????????????????????????
Dwindling fossil fuel supplies and environmental concerns have created a market for highly fuel-efficient and green-friendly vehicles. Consumers are more open to electric and hybrid cars than ever before, and the automotive industry has responded by creating some of the most environmentally friendly and green vehicles ever conceived. From whisper-quiet electric vehicles to aggressive hybrid performers, here are ten green vehicles currently in production in the global automotive marketplace that experts believe are poised to change the daily commute forever.

I looked around the web to find vehicles that would match just about everyone?s style including speed, looks, practicality and even something for the whole family. I?ll kick this post off with the Audi E-Tron mainly because I?m a huge fan of the R8 and love the idea of this mid engined sports car to keep the ?green speed? dreams and hopes alive going into the next decade. One thing?s for sure, I?ll definitely miss the sound of a V10 growling proudly as it tears up the asphalt beneath it.

Audi E-Tron

???????????

?
First unveiled to the public in 2009, the Audi e-tron is very much a work in progress with four separate iterations so far. The most recent version of this stylish hybrid is dubbed the e-tron Spyder and has made appearances at the 2010 Paris Auto Show and the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show held in January 2011. The e-tron Spyder features two electric motors, one for each of the front wheels, paired with a twin-turbodiesel 3.0-liter V-6 engine that pumps power to the rear wheels. This allows the Audi e-tron Spyder to deliver outstanding performance and to go from zero to sixty miles per hour in under 4.4 seconds. While no official release date has been forthcoming, automotive experts believe that Audi is likely to launch some version of the e-tron in 2012.

Ford Focus Electric

???????????

?
With room for five passengers and sleek, appealing exterior lines, Ford may have designed a winner in the 2012 Ford Focus Electric, which is powered solely by its 107 kW electric motor and offers buyers real freedom from the gas pump. Ford estimates that the vehicle will exceed 100 MPGe, an exceptional degree of power-efficiency. The Ford Focus Electric also incorporates a revolutionary single-speed transmission that automatically adjusts to driving conditions. With an estimated top speed of 84 miles per hour, the Ford Focus Electric may break through lingering resistance to be a major contender for 2012.

Tesla Model X

???????????

?
Rumor has it that the unveiling of the Tesla Model X will occur in February 2012, but this crossover SUV has been eagerly anticipated by automotive specialists for months. Tesla boasts that the Model X will outperform the Porsche 911 while offering more interior room than the Audi Q7, no small feat for an all-electric vehicle. Little is known about the design of the vehicle, although initial photos indicate that it features a fairly high profile and sleek exterior lines. Tesla officials have also indicated that the Tesla Model X will feature four-wheel drive. The actual release date of the Tesla Model X is not expected before 2014.

Volkswagen XL1

???????????

?
With its unique futuristic styling, the Volkswagen XL1 concept car looks more like a spaceship than a passenger vehicle. Designed for the European market, the Volkswagen XL1 is the latest attempt to create a one-liter car capable of travelling 100 kilometers on just one liter of fuel. For the U.S. market, that?s sixty-two miles on a little over a quarter of a gallon of gas and 235 miles to the gallon, an unbelievable degree of fuel economy. The Volkswagen XL1 manages this amazing feat by combining a .8-liter turbodiesel engine with an electric motor that produces 27 horsepower and 74 pound-feet of torque and streamlining and eliminating excess weight. The Volkswagen XL1 could be in production as early as 2013.

Jaguar C-X75

???????????

?
The initial configuration of the Jaguar C-X75 was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and featured four electric motors, one for each wheel of the car. This allowed the Jaguar C-X75 to offer true four-wheel drive. The electric motors are supplemented and charged using diesel micro gas turbines, a step forward in innovation for the hybrid market and one that will likely find its way into many other high-end hybrid vehicles in years to come. While Jaguar has announced no plans to incorporate this technology into a street-ready vehicle, it will likely release a version of the Jaguar C-X75 with a more conventional hybrid setup sometime in 2013; the sticker price is expected to exceed $1 million.

Optimal Energy Joule

???????????

?
Prompted by concerns about fuel prices and sustainable business practices, South African auto manufacturer Optimal Energy designed and built the country?s first all-electric zero-emissions vehicle. The Joule made its debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show where its aggressively aerodynamic lines earned serious attention from buyers and reviewers alike. Powered solely by its electric motor, the Optimal Energy Joule is exceptionally quiet and seats five in comfort; limited production of the Joule took place in 2010 as part of a pilot fleet, but full production for the European and African market is scheduled to begin for 2014.

Kia Ray

???????????

?
Some version of the Kia Ray EV is scheduled for worldwide release in 2014, but this peppy little mini MPV electric crossover is already in use in Korea as a government fleet vehicle, where it delivers solid if unexceptional performance for everyday use. The current version features a 50 kW electric motor powered by a 16.4 kWh battery. This combination produces 67 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration is sluggish and can even be downright stubborn, but this lack of power is unlikely to dissuade the target audience for the Kia Ray?s particular combination of low price and green-friendly credentials.

Acura ILX Hybrid

???????????

?
Touted as the first hybrid produced by Acura, the ILX Hybrid concept car features the same sleek, European-styled lines as its siblings in the Acura lineup and is likely to appeal to the same audience. However, the powertrain of the Acura ILX Hybrid was apparently lifted directly from the Honda Civic playbook with an identical 1.3-liter gas engine and 15kW electric motor. It?s the sleek luxury car appearance and exceptional array of standard features available on the Acura ILX, however, that is likely to attract buyers most. The Acura ILX Hybrid is scheduled for release during the 2013 model year.

BMW Clever

???????????

?
The unique three-wheel design of the two-passenger BMW Clever is likely to provoke some controversy in the automotive world with its streamlined silhouette and motorcycle-like profile. The name Clever is an acronym for Compact Low Emission Vehicle for Urban Transport, and its engine delivers on that promise with a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. The futuristically designed vehicle features tandem seating; that is, the passenger rides behind the driver in this ultra-small car. The unusual vehicle silhouette of the BMW Clever has been painstakingly designed to promote safety even in a head-on collision. No release date has been set for a production model, but the BMW Clever is one of the most innovative new concepts in low-emissions transportation.

Delorean DMC-12 EV

???????????

?
The Delorean DMC-12 was initially produced in 1981 and was an essential element in the success of the Back to the Future movie franchise. The time machine seems to be in good working order, however, as Delorean has announced a reimagining of this classic automobile as an electric car with a top speed of 125 that will easily top the 88 miles per hour mark required to achieve time travel. Expected to go into production for the 2013 model year, the Delorean DMC-12 EV will feature a 149 kW engine that will allow it to manage zero to sixty in just eight seconds, an excellent time for an all-electric vehicle.
