Clearview Cancer Trial Having Success | WHNT.com ? Huntsville ...

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) ? Louis Booth was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma about 3 years ago.

His early attempts at treatment were unsuccessful, so when he heard about a new clinical trial at Clearview Cancer Institute in Huntsville, he jumped at the opportunity.

After only one treatment, the results were remarkable. The swelling in his lymph-nodes was down by 50 percent.

The drug Louis is taking is called Ublituximab, and doctors are combining it with a pill form of chemotherapy.

Louis is the first person to receive this combination of treatments. He says it?s the best Christmas present he?s ever gotten.

If you would like to participate in a clinical trial, contact Clearview Cancer Institute.

Elite Professional Golfers at Home in Old Palm Golf Club | Old Palm ...

Old Palm has become the North American home for several of the biggest golf stars on the PGA Tour and European Tour. Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, and Lee Westwood have purchased residences at Old Palm, citing its gracious neighborhoods, award-winning builders and sense of community. Darren Clarke is a member and ?regular? at the Club, where he mingles with his contemporaries and other Old Palm owners.

Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open Champion, was the first of the group to purchase a home in Old Palm. Louis, his wife Nel-Mare, and two young daughters moved into a stunning, two-story estate overlooking the third hole of Old Palm?s spectacular Raymond Floyd-designed golf course.? The home is located within the Golf Estates, where the family will reside when Louis plays in North American PGA Tour events.

?Old Palm is a haven for relaxation and enjoyment for me when I am in the United States,? says Oosthuizen. ?The world-class amenities, exclusivity and a sense of community provide a sense of comfort and home between Tour events.?

Fellow South African and 2011 Masters champion and recent winner of the Thailand Golf Championship, Schwartzel, purchased a large estate at Old Palm. Charl and his wife, Rosalind, are finalizing plans on the custom home they?ll build in the Custom Estates. Home sites in this elegant neighborhood average one full acre, a rare and welcome luxury in the Palm Beaches.

?Living at Old Palm has been a wonderful experience and not just because of its exceptional golf facilities,? says Schwartzel. ?Old Palm makes for a relaxing lifestyle, so I can play my best when traveling throughout the United States for PGA Tour events. It allows for privacy when we want it, and when we?re in the Club the members have welcomed us like old friends.?

Westwood, who hails from England, recently purchased his home in Old Palm?s Custom Estates neighborhood as a year-round base. Hasey Construction is customizing the residence to suit the Westwood family, which includes Lee?s wife, Laurae, and their son and daughter. The home is designed for entertaining and features unique characteristics such as a fire pit within the swimming pool, and a NanaWall system of folding glass doors that opens the home?s interior space to the outdoors.

?Old Palm is an ideal living situation for me and my family, and the convenient location and weather are optimal for my PGA Tour schedule. The phenomenal practice facilities coupled with the outstanding amenities and atmosphere make Old Palm the perfect home for us.?

Top Five Tips for New Cooks In 2013: Resolve To Get Back In the ...

Come January, each and every one of us will be boasting about some ridiculous, noble new years resolution. Think juice cleanses, gym memberships, or renouncing all things pork. We've all been there. But, come February, after much whimpering and complaining, we'll be back to our bacon-eating and milkshake-drinking ways.

Too often, food resolutions are about extremes. This is why they result in failure. Instead of vowing to abide by strict dietary restrictions, try this: get in the kitchen and cook more often. Stop eating out so much. Cook dinner at least one day out of the week. Set the table, turn off the TV, drink some booze, and eat a meal with friends or family. This change alone will lead to more healthful, delicious eating.

So, in the hopes of spreading our enthusiasm for all things cooking, we've compiled a list of the five best tips for new cooks in 2013.

5. Get off the couch and step into the kitchen
A few years ago, in an article penned for the New York Times, Michael Pollan exposed a harsh reality: Americans were getting out of the kitchen and stepping into the living room. While plopped atop a plush love seat, lovers of Paula Deen's loaded potatoes were becoming more and more mesmerized by Food Network's porn-like close-up shots of vibrant scarlet tomatoes, emerald basil leaves, and Bobby Flay's margaritas. It wasn't educational, and it was only for entertainment purposes. But, most importantly, it never rid any viewers of hunger. So, next year, turn off the TV. Instead of watching people cook on screen, try taking a hand at it yourself.

4. Grow an herb garden
Adding fresh herbs to cooking is one of the simplest ways to incorporate bursts of freshness to any dish. But herbs are pricey, and those 2-ounce packs of thyme for $2.99 can easily rack up the grocery bill. Potted herbs are the solution. They are sold everywhere -- from Publix to Whole Foods -- and cost only $3 - $5. Once you have a constant reminder that fresh flavor is only a few snippets away, the garden will also inspire more time in the kitchen.

US jobless aid applications fall to 5-year low

The Labor Department said Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, that weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell 29,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 343,000, the lowest in two months. It is the second-lowest total this year. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

(AP) ? The average number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits over the past month fell to the lowest level since March 2008, a sign that the job market is healing.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications dropped 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000 in the week ended Dec. 22. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell to a nearly five-year low of 356,750.

Still, the Christmas holiday may have distorted the figures. A department spokesman said many state unemployment offices were closed Monday and Tuesday and could not provide exact data. That forced the government to rely on estimates. Normally, the government might estimate application data for one or two states. Last week, it had to use estimates for 19.

The estimates are usually fairly accurate, the spokesman said. Even so, the government will likely revise the figures by more than normal next week.

Weekly applications are a proxy for layoffs. They have mostly fluctuated this year between 360,000 and 390,000. At the same time, employers have added an average of 151,000 jobs a month in the first 11 months of 2012. That's just enough to slowly reduce the unemployment rate.

Economists were mildly encouraged by the decline in applications. But they emphasized that the figures are volatile around the holidays. They were also distorted until recent weeks by Superstorm Sandy.

Many expect next week's jobs report to show that employers added about 150,000 jobs in December.

The decline in unemployment benefit applications suggests companies are not yet slashing jobs because of concerns over the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for sharp tax increases and spending cuts that are scheduled to take effect next week unless the Obama administration and Congress can reach a deal before then.

Still, unemployment remains high and companies are reluctant to ramp up hiring. The unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent in November from 7.9 percent in October mostly because many of the unemployed stopped looking for jobs. The government counts people as unemployed only if they are actively searching for work.

Negotiations between President Barack Obama and House Republican leaders on a package to avoid the fiscal cliff stalemated last week. Obama and congressional lawmakers return to Washington Thursday with just days to go before the deadline.

The total number of people receiving benefits rose 73,000 to 5.48 million in the week ended Dec. 8, the latest data available.

That includes about 2.1 million people who have been out of work for at least six months and are receiving extended benefits paid for by the federal government. The program is ending at the end of the year. That means those recipients will receive their final checks next week, unless an extension is granted.

Obama wants an extension included in the budget deal. Republicans have yet to agree to that.

There are signs the economy is improving. The once-battered housing market is recovering, which should lead to more construction jobs in the coming months. Companies ordered more long-lasting manufactured goods in November, a sign they are investing more in equipment and software. And Americans spent more in November. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic growth.

While a short fall over the cliff won't push the economy into recession, most economists expect some tax increases to take effect next year. That could slow growth.

Consumers are starting to worry about higher taxes. A measure of consumer confidence fell to a five-month low this month, a survey released Friday found. And reports show the holiday shopping season was the weakest since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.

Tips To Help You Meet Your Personal Development Goals | Bob ...

If you want to gain a better understanding of yourself, there are many people who can assist you with this process. Professionals, friends and family are here to help you reflect on yourself through dialogue.

Many times, stress is the thing that robs people of happiness. Stress can take both a physical and an emotional toll on your body. Make sure to deal with stress in order to always think clearly and calmly about your goals. Set a relaxation time every single day to be alone and clear your mind. This mental break each day will improve your peace and clarity of mind, and help improve your self-image.

TIP! Everyone screws up sometime and does something they should not. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

To become a better person, you have to actively decide to start growing and changing. If we want to grow or change, we have to accept and choose the change.

If you find that you are constantly having difficulty meeting your goals, take a step back to evaluate what?s going on. You can take time to research your goals, and see how others have achieved the same accomplishments. Maybe you are underestimating the problem, or maybe you are underestimating yourself.

Accept your limitations before engaging in self improvement. By accepting your insignificance in the grand scheme of things, you begin to comprehend your ignorance and lack of wisdom. Staying aware of this will broaden your perspective and increase your quest for knowledge, leading to a better you.

TIP! Instead of talking about your accomplishments, ask some other people about some of the things they have accomplished and what they are most proud of. Placing your focus on others will help you recognize the potential of those around you.

Write yourself a pep talk. Keep a list of your good qualities in your wallet. Carry this list with you at all times, and take it out when you need to pick yourself up. Better yet, videotape yourself reading it aloud and view the video frequently. How will this help with your personal development?

Your body?s health influences the well-being of your mind. Exercise on a regular basis, and eat a healthy diet filled with nutritious foods. Your mind and body must both be healthy to feel your best.

Good leaders have firm rules, but are also honest. You should lecture, but do it softly, and keep in mind that you have to know servitude to be able to lead. A good leader is virtuous and full of integrity, something you need in order to be successful.

In order to help with depression, try to add extra complex carbohydrates to your diet. Without adequate complex carbohydrates, your body may burn too quickly through serotonin. Increase your consumption of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, brown rice, assorted beans and whole grains to have a diet that is enriched in complex carbohydrates.

In order to grow as a person, you need to give your life direction. Long-term goals are a tremendous thing to have and can make a big difference in your perspective.

TIP! Begin your personal development with a look at your leadership qualities. The key to being a leader is influence, according to most people.

Try not to take yourself too seriously. Although we don?t think about it every day, we are tiny pieces of a vast universe. No one knows everything, and everyone has more to learn from others. Keep this in mind, and you will have limitless potential for growth. Keeping an open mind will allow you to learn from other people.

If you feel you are not making progress, try to see specifically what is keeping you from it. This can prove problematic for most folks. The ability to see your own weaknesses is essential to being able to take the first step in the right direction. If you are successful in moving obstacles out of your way, you may find that your life?s path is easier to navigate.

Try perusing some books on self improvement. These types of reading materials can often provide new insights and give you methods to alter your behavior in lifelong positive ways. It is always best to check the reviews for a book. Self improvement books can be very poorly written.

TIP! Have a notebook or a smartphone app to jot down notes wherever you go. Make sure you have a notepad on you at all times.

Have a special account for emergencies. An emergency fund will deter you from putting any charges on your credit card. Just saving a little bit each week can quickly add up to a decent sum. That fund can aid in both the long term and short term as debt goes down.

It is very rewarding to know yourself more than other people do. Always treat yourself well and never lie to yourself. Learn to enjoy your own company.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STMW) ? The light will shine extra brightly Monday evening in and around Seven Bridges Estates ? and perhaps beyond.

When Barbara and Keith Baron and their two kids moved into the southeast Naperville neighborhood last August, they had no idea that an unspeakably violent act would soon put on the map the beloved town they had just left behind.

The Barons had spent 11 years living in a small section of Newtown, Conn., known as Sandy Hook. Their children ? Jacob, now a District 203 seventh-grader, and his fourth-grade sister, Rosie ? attended Sandy Hook Elementary School, where Adam Lanza fatally shot 20 children and six staff members on Dec. 14 before inflicting his final gunshot on himself as police closed in. Barbara worked as a special education aide in the same hallway where the killings took place.

When she asked the few neighbors she has met here so far to set lighted candles in their driveways Monday night, to honor those lost, it was a step in the healing process.

?As you can imagine, the full impact of this tragedy is felt in our hearts as the crippling waves of grief leave us in the wake that has taken the lives of friends and perfect little children,? Barbara wrote in a letter she sent to her new friends.

Barbara said Rosie spent the lunch hour for several days this week sequestered with a couple of her friends and their teacher. Jacob, who also has been struggling to process the devastating event, visited with his guidance counselor at school, and that brought comfort.

?He can?t articulate why he can?t focus in math, so it has helped him to go in there,? said Barbara, who grew up in this area.

Two of Jacob?s close friends, and one of Rosie?s, all lost little brothers in the shooting rampage. Barbara lost some friends as well.

?We have a personal connection with at least seven of the faces that were on TV,? she said.

Those included Sandy Hook Principal Dawn Hochsprung, who was shot when she ran into the hallway where Lanza had just blasted his way into the school. All of the accolades issued about the principal in the aftermath of the crime fell short, Barbara said.

?There really aren?t words to describe how wonderful she was. She lifted up everybody,? she said, adding that Hochsprung?s boldly brave reaction came as no surprise to her. ?That was totally in character.?

Another of those killed, first-grade teacher Victoria Soto, had been a permanent substitute teacher before getting a classroom of her own. News reports related that Soto hid her students in cupboards and closets before facing the gunman and trying to divert his attention to the other end of the building, only to be shot.

?She was my son?s favorite substitute,? Barbara said.

Newtown, wrestling with the grief of so many funerals taking place too soon, is apparently as quaint as it appears on the news clips.

?It is just your quintessential New England town ? very picturesque,? Barbara said. ?You may not know everybody?s name, (but) you recognize people?s faces.?
She has spoken to some of her friends and former neighbors since the attack.

?It is just so heartwrenchingly overwhelming,? she said Friday morning. ?I mean, today there were five funerals, and everybody is going to all of them if they can.?

The Barons plan to visit Newtown sometime in January, she said. In the meantime, they?re heartsick ? and perhaps a little homesick, too.

?It?s just tugging at the heart strings, because we don?t have anyone here we can hug and feel this with,? Barbara said. ?So the lighting of the candles and the [luminarias] will be just so helpful.?

In a message to fellow Seven Bridges residents, David Dornbos implored the neighbors to assemble and set out luminarias Monday.

?(Barbara) was good friends with the principal and other teachers that died, and they all lost children of friends, or siblings of friends,? Dornbos wrote. ?She is going to contact those she knows (which is not many) to place luminarias in their driveways on Christmas Eve after dark to support those families affected by the tragedy. How wonderful would it be for them, if our entire community supported them??

Other residents in the subdivision quickly took up the cause of spreading the word.

?I thought it was great that our neighborhood was joining together to support them and wanted to spread it to our entire school and get as many people as possible to support them so I posted on my Facebook page and asked other friends to spread the word,? neighbor Heidi Sampson said in an email, adding that some of the kids who attend school with Rosie had made luminarias for her driveway. ?Even though some of the children don?t know about the tragedy, they all wanted to show their classmate how much they care.?

Another homeowner who will be taking part in the special holiday lighting is hopeful the gesture will have an even broader reach.

?I?m sure that if our neighborhoods want to show support,? Chelle Arends wrote in an email, ?that all of Naperville may want to as well, being Naperville is just a BIG small town!?

Accredited Institutions for Online Homeschooling High School ...

Our house is our very first training ground. With that said, mother and father are the primary lecturers and instructors of their children. You may not remember, but your mother and father are those who taught you the best way to stand up, walk and even dance. You?re in a position to utter your first phrases like ma-ma and da-da because you imitated the sounds your mother and father make whenever they talk. That is why each time a child accomplishes one thing like spelling his name or learning the best way to bike, mother and father are just so proud.

Traditional College Programs Vs Christian Homeschooling Curriculum At present, teaching programs range from tradition classroom curriculum to homeschooling programs. In conventional education setting, students share the identical classroom, teacher and topic matter. Additionally there are school?s rules, the place students are subjected to follow. Homeschooling education, alternatively is extra flexible than conventional setting. It truly permits a child to study at his or her personal pace. Kodak to receive $525M from patent sale

(AP) ? Eastman Kodak will receive about $525 million from the sale of its digital imaging patents, money the struggling photo pioneer says will help it emerge from bankruptcy protection in the first half of next year.

The Rochester, N.Y., company filed for bankruptcy protection in January after struggling to adapt to the shift to digital photography.

Eastman Kodak Co. said Wednesday the patent sale will help it repay a substantial amount of its initial debtor-in-possession loan, and it satisfies a key condition of new financing that required the sale of the patents for at least $500 million.

In November, Kodak said it would receive loans worth $830 million in a new, cheaper financing package, replacing a $793 million deal.

Kodak has been pummeled in recent years as consumers switched to digital photography from film. It put its patents up for sale in July 2011, and analysts initially thought the portfolio could fetch between $2 billion and $3 billion because patents have become highly valuable to digital device makers who want to protect themselves from intellectual property lawsuits. But Kodak struggled to find a buyer.

Meanwhile, Kodak has been working to refocus its business on commercial and packaging printing, leaving behind its digital cameras, pocket video cameras and digital picture frames businesses.

It is selling 1,100 patents to a group of 12 licensees organized by Intellectual Ventures and RPX Corp. The deal also includes an agreement to settle patent-related litigation.

Kodak spokesman Christopher Veronda said each licensee will pay a portion of the total cost and then have access to all the patents.

The licensee group includes Shutterfly Inc., a company that lets customers store, print and share photos on the Internet. Earlier this year, Kodak sold its online photo service business to Shutterfly for $23.8 million.

Kodak will retain ownership of about 9,600 patents, focused mostly on commercial imaging and printing technologies.

Heritage: GOP Leaders Capitulate on Core Conservative Principles

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Republican leaders have done it once again. Their latest fiscal cliff proposal capitulates on core conservative principles, yielding woefully inadequate concessions from President Obama in the process. Will they ever learn?

The latest GOP offer essentially ignores Washington?s real problem ? spending ? and puts a $1 trillion tax hike on the table. It?s so bad that conservatives are now left with only one unfortunate alternative ? passing a temporary measure that avoids a doomsday scenario until the end of March. It?s the best possible outcome with the days dwindling on the remainder of 2012.

In a city where kicking the can has become a routine course of action, it?s hardly the preferable outcome for lawmakers. But it would be better than just going over the fiscal cliff and better than the current $1 trillion tax increase offered by Boehner, which, not surprisingly, was summarily rejected by Obama, who proceeded to counteroffer with an even bigger tax hike and even fewer spending cuts. At this point, no ?grand bargain? is going to result in the spending cuts that are needed to reduce the debt.

Yesterday, Heritage?s Alison Acosta Fraser outlined a few reasons why Boehner?s latest proposal is just plain bad policy:

  • Higher tax rates discourage all the activities that lead to a stronger economy. That?s even something Obama acknowledged when he signed legislation preventing a similar tax hike two years ago.
  • Dollar-for-dollar tax increases and spending cuts ? Boehner?s plan ? won?t fix what?s broken. Spending cuts, not a $1 trillion tax hike, should be the GOP?s focus.
  • After two years of running the House, there?s still no clear plan how Republicans would cut spending. Even as of this late date, they have provided few real guiding principles or details on spending reforms. It?s the $800 billion question.
  • Relinquishing control over the debt limit to Obama for a year would take away one of the only points of leverage for conservatives. It ensures no meaningful reforms will happen in 2013.

These factors make it clear that any deal this year will be a disaster. That?s why Fraser recommends kicking the can until the end of March. This alternative is hardly ideal, but given the situation created by lawmakers, it?s the best possible outcome for Americans.

So why March 31? Heritage?s J.D. Foster, the Norman B. Ture Senior Fellow in the Economics of Fiscal Policy, said it will give conservatives an opportunity to ?live to fight another day? with better leverage at the negotiating table.

Here?s how the temporary plan would play out, according to Foster:

  • The measure would postpone the dreaded fiscal cliff until next year, extending all tax rates and all spending policy without sequestration cuts.
  • Legislation funding the federal government expires on March 31, meaning that Congress must act by that date to prevent a shutdown.
  • The debt ceiling would increase, but only enough to allow the government to continue to operate until just after March 31. Congress would retain control of the debt limit.
  • Some 28 million taxpayer would avoid paying the Alternative Minimum Tax. A patch for 2012 would save an average of $2,250 for those taxpayers.
  • Doctors wouldn?t face deep cuts for Medicare payments in January.

The New 'Don't Be Greedy' MVNO Business Model

You're not imagining things if you're noticing more mobile network brands than ever before. The newcomers are MVNOs -- companies that lease spectrum from major networks and resell it to end-users. It's easier than ever to escape the clutches of a cellphone contract by taking advantage of some of the contract-less deals out there.

Worshippers hurry from Conn. church, cite threat

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Worshippers hurriedly left a church Sunday, saying they were told there was a bomb threat not far from the elementary school where 20 kids and six adults were massacred.

At least a dozen police in camouflage SWAT gear and carrying guns arrived at the St. Rose of Lima Church. An Associated Press photographer saw police leave carrying something in a red tarp.

Guns drawn, they surrounded the rectory across the parking lot from the main church building. A large crowd of parishioners gathered outside.

There was no official report from police about the threat or evacuation.

Shooter Adam Lanza, his mother and eight of the child victims attended St. Rose of Lima. It is a Roman Catholic Church with an adjacent school, which Lanza attended briefly.

It's not clear if there actually was a threat or if, like many tragedies, whether it was a hoax or the result of a community on edge.

The church hosted overflow crowds at all three morning masses Sunday.
