Life?s building blocks grow close to home

Though life is a complicated brew, some of its ingredients can be plucked from Earth?s backyard instead of being imported from more distant interstellar fields.

In a new study, scientists suggest that complex organic molecules ? such as the amino acids that build proteins and the ringed bases that form nucleic acids ? grow on the icy dust grains that lived in the infant solar system. All it takes are high-energy ultraviolet photons to provoke the rearrangement of chemical elements in the grains? frozen sheaths.

If making these organic ingredients happens this readily, then exoplanetary systems are probably seeded with the same fertile, organic pastures. ?Anywhere you have ice and high-energy, ultraviolet radiation, this process is going to take place. And those are both pretty common in the universe,? says Dante Lauretta, a planetary scientist at the University of Arizona.

In the new work, reported online March 29 in Science, researchers began by simulating the early solar nebula, a swirling disk of gas and dust that surrounded the young sun until planets began forming about 4.5 billion years ago. Over a 1-million-year period, the team tracked the movement of 5,000 individual dust grains, tiny organic-toting particles covered in ices made from compounds like water, carbon dioxide, methanol, or ammonia.

?We wanted to know exactly what conditions those ice particles were seeing,? says coauthor Fred Ciesla, a planetary scientist at the University of Chicago. ?It?s a turbulent environment, and every particle follows its own path.?

Most grains survived the million-year period, though some fell inward and were snatched by the sun.?

Grains lofted above the disk?s plane met warmer temperatures and high-energy ultraviolet photons ? the catalysts needed to convert elements in the simple ices to more complex molecules. In these types of reactions, photons striking chemical bonds create what study coauthor Scott Sandford calls ?unhappy radicals and ions? ? species that are highly reactive and ready to recombine. As warming temperatures cause the ices to evaporate, those elements can find partners and form new molecules.

Even though it?s relatively easy to create these rearranged molecules, scientists can?t really predict which will form because the chemical reactions don?t follow familiar rules. ?It?s a bit like saying, ?I?m going to give you 10 kinds of Lego blocks, feel free to stack them in any combination you want,?? says Sandford, an astrophysicist at NASA?s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

But with enough photons slamming into enough dust grains in the early solar nebula, it?s hard to avoid making complex molecules this way, Ciesla says.

Astrobiologists have identified such molecules as being important in the story of life?s origins, and there?s abundant evidence that they can survive in space. Scientists autopsying meteorites that crashed to Earth have found amino acids and nucleobases in the space rocks.

In the lab, researchers have simulated how such compounds could be made astrochemically. By applying organic ices to tiny surfaces in a frigid vacuum, and then irradiating them, teams have produced an array of molecules, including one that spontaneously organizes itself into membranes, says Jason Dworkin, an astrobiologist at NASA?s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Swirling around the young sun, those organic-laden ice grains eventually clustered and clumped. The clumps grew into comets and asteroids that bore these molecules to Earth, depositing them in fiery collisions or lighting the infant skies with an organic-rich hailstorm. ?I think it?s well established that extraterrestrial compounds were delivered in this way,? Dworkin says. It?s not yet clear how much the space travelers contributed to the population of organic compounds on Earth, but are certainly a convenient mode of delivery. ?If you want to build Lego castles, having Lego bricks falling out of the sky is not a bad idea,? Sandford says.

Flinging rocks at Earth is not the only way to deposit organics. ?I?ve never felt I had to look for an extraterrestrial source of amino acids to understand how amino acids could have arisen on this planet,? says geochemist George Cody of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. But lots of irradiated icy particles in the solar nebula, as Ciesla and Sandford have proposed, is a tantalizing natural reservoir, he says.

Scientists are still considering whether materials made on Earth helped litter the planet with organics. It seems likely, although any complex molecules would need to survive the young planet?s violent, fiery growth spasms, a period marked by magma oceans and extreme temperatures that would have destroyed any preexisting complex structure. Both extraterrestrial and homegrown processes probably played a role, Ciesla says. ?These organics will be there to incorporate into planets as they form, or in later delivery, after the planets form, which could be interesting in terms of astrobiology.?

Soon, scientists should have a better idea of the array of molecules that live on asteroids. In 2016, NASA will fire a spacecraft at an asteroid, scrape off some of its surface, and return the samples to Earth. The OSIRIS-REx mission will aim for asteroid 1999 RQ36 (the subject of a renaming contest this fall) and return to Earth in 2023, carrying samples that researchers will examine for clues to the solar system?s early years.

?Any organic molecule is going to be interesting for deciphering the history of the solar system,? says Lauretta, the principal investigator for the mission. ?But for tracing the origin of life, we really focus in on the building blocks.?

Life?s Legos growing nearby carries strong implications for the likelihood of such organic pastures in other planetary systems. ?As far as the chemistry goes,? Dworkin says, ?this appears universal.?

9 Foods Prevent Alzheimer's disease

Eating a healthy diet can lower the risk of diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

The National Institutes of Health recently said there is some evidence that food, diet, or lifestyle can prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Here are nine foods that according to the researchers were able to keep the entire body including the brain to stay healthy.

"These data suggest that eating foods high in vitamin E include vegetable healthy salad dressing oil based, beans, peanut butter, and whole grains can lower the risk of getting Alzheimer's, "says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology Department of Internal Medicine Rush University, Chicago.

Vitamin E is a source of powerful antioxidants that may help protect neurons or nerve cells.

In Alzheimer's disease, neurons in certain parts of the brain begin to die causing cognitive impairment.

Fish
Salmon, mackerel, tuna and other fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including acids docosahexaenoic (DHA).
"In the brain, DHA has a crucial role for the normal functioning of neurons," said Morris.

Another plus, the more often means eating fish can reduce the consumption of red meat and other forms of protein are high in saturated fat can lead to clogged arteries.
Greens

Kale, collard greens, spinach, and broccoli are rich sources of vitamin E and folic acid, Morris said.

For example, one cup of raw spinach contains 15% of daily intake of vitamin E, and 1/2 cup of cooked spinach contains 25% vitamin E from your daily consumption.

Exactly how folic acid can protect the brain remains unclear, but perhaps with lower levels of amino acids known as homocysteinein the blood.

High levels of homocysteine can trigger the death of nerve cells in the brain, but levels of folic acid to help break down homocysteine.

Content homocysteine High is also often associated with an increased risk of heart disease.
Avocado

Creamy fruit is also a rich source of antioxidant vitamin E.
According to research conducted by Morris and colleagues showed that a diet rich in vitamin E include avocados, which are also high in antioxidant vitamin C can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Sunflower seeds

Seeds, including sunflower seeds, is also a good source of vitamin E.

One ounce of roasted sunflower seeds contain 30% of the recommended intake for your daily diet.
Peanuts and peanut butter

Although both are high in fat, peanuts and peanut butter tends to be a source of healthy fats, but they also contain vitamin E.

Both of these foods can help keep the heart and brain stay healthy and function properly. Other good choices are almonds and hazelnuts.

Red wine / Red wine
Research has shown that people who consumed red wine and other types of alcohol in moderate amounts can reduce the risk or likelihood of Alzheimer's disease.

Berry Fruit
Recent research presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston found that blueberries, strawberries, and acai fruit can help keep cognitive decline by keeping the natural mechanisms of the brain, which decreases with age

Do you befriend a potential boss on Facebook?

3 hrs.

So you go out to a job interview, and everything went well, but when you get home the hiring manager has sent you a friend request on Facebook and LinkedIn. What should you do?

Some people have gotten their jobs through Twitter, but this seems a little creepy. Should you accept his friend request? What if you get hired and this is normal for everyone who works there? What should you do?

I know a number of people who owe their current jobs to interactions with companies or individuals on Twitter or LinkedIn. Social media can be a powerful tool to help people get exposure and connect with people ? people with jobs to offer ? that they would never have spoken to directly otherwise. Reaching out to employers via Twitter and LinkedIn gives you a way to get your name in front of someone and out of the stack of resumes they have to sift through. How closely you connect to potential employers on those networks however, has more to do with the network in question and how comfortable you are with it than anything else.

At the same time, with potential employers?asking candidates for their Facebook passwords, you have reason to be cautious. Mind you, that practice is?possibly illegal, definitely against Facebook's terms-of-service, and?Facebook is threatening legal action?against anyone who does it. It's possible they just want to see what you have behind the veil of your privacy settings, or maybe they really want to get to know the real you before extending an offer, to see if you fit in with the corporate culture. You're also right to be worried about what might happen if you're hired there ? maybe it's normal for everyone in that office to be Facebook friends, or to all follow the company's Twitter account. Let's take a look at these possibilities one at a time, then you can decide whether you want to click accept, or ignore.

The post-interview friend request
If the potential employer wants to be a Facebook friend, your situation is a rough one. My first instinct is to say, unless the interview went so well that your interviewer wants to be your friend personally, that they want to see your Facebook profile, but don't want to directly ask for your password. If the interviewer is especially malicious, he may be asking now to give you the impression that your future with that company may hang in the balance. You have every right ? and frankly, should ? say no here, and direct the interviewer instead to your LinkedIn profile. You mentioned they wanted to connect with you there ? respond by letting them know that your Facebook profile is for friends and personal acquaintances, and LinkedIn is for professional networking.?

If they don't care for that response, or claim (like one company I know) that it's company policy for everyone to be Facebook friends, then you have a choice to make. You can dangle it back in front of them and say you'd be willing to do that when or if you're hired, or you can walk away. Ultimately it depends on how sensitive you are to what your Facebook friends see, and how much you personally value that privacy. If we can offer a tip that's outside the principle of the matter, consider?setting up friends lists or groups?so?you have better control over who sees what. Then you can dump this person?and any other future coworkers?into a select group that sees little to nothing. The trouble is that you'll have to go back over past posts, photos, updates, and everything else to make sure their permissions are changed to exclude this new group. You'll have to decide whether that's more hassle than it's worth.

The post-hire friend request
The next ? and more common ? scenario you might encounter happens after you're on the job and you start getting friend requests from co-workers, your boss or even HR. At one company I worked for, our marketing department sent out an email to the whole organization to "let us know" that the company now had a Twitter account, and that we were "highly encouraged" to follow it, and to like their Facebook page while we were at it. This same company would regularly check on its employees to see if they were updating their LinkedIn accounts or publicly posting their resumes and reported those employees to their managers, warning that they may be looking for new jobs.

The big difference here is, of course, if you're good friends with your co-workers, you may have no trouble friending or following them on Facebook or Twitter. However, if your boss or HR suddenly sends you a friend request and you're not comfortable with it, there's no reason you should accept it unless you think it really is a friendly request and you're about to rebuff them for personal reasons. If that's the case, they should understand that you try to keep your work life and your personal life a little separate, but either way the situation calls for a little tact. Here are some tips:

  • Direct managers and HR to LinkedIn whenever possible. If your boss wants to connect with you professionally and does so by sending you a Facebook request, let them know your professional connections are at LinkedIn and give them your profile URL. Assuming, of course, you have a LinkedIn profile.
  • Are your co-workers really friends or just snooping? It's unlikely, but it is possible that your co-workers are just adding you in order to see what you're up to, especially in off hours. Be careful of co-workers and managers who use Facebook during the day to see whether?you?are using it during the day, when you should be working. If you're really friends with your co-workers, go ahead and add them. If not, it might be time to shunt them to LinkedIn.
  • Lock down your Facebook account. Using your Facebook profile to snag a job by?sprucing it up, adding a new photo, and updating your education and interests?is a great idea, but be ready to back it up if a company tries to connect with you. Lock down your past posts so only your real friends can see them?especially any times you were complaining about your old job. Then?add them to a list?where they only see things you're comfortable making public.
  • Use Facebook to your advantage. Create a friends list for professional contacts, and feed it accomplishments, certifications or other similar news. Even better, create a Facebook page for your "personal brand," which can serve as a Facebook-based resume. Then encourage the company or hiring manager to like?your?page to see your portfolio, accomplishments, and what you're working on professionally.

  • Clean Up Your Twitter account. The beauty ? and trouble ? with Twitter is that everything's either all public, or all hidden. I know more people who have found new jobs through Twitter than Facebook or even LinkedIn, but the only things you can do is go back in time and delete anything you think would be worrysome or be on your best behavior when you tweet. You have the option to take your account private, but then no one can see anything, and you're cut off from potential friends?and?employers ? but you will have your privacy.
  • Throw caution to the wind. There's always the option to just not care. You could just accept friend requests and Twitter followers and not bother to moderate yourself at all. There's some logic to the notion that any company that won't accept you for who you are, both in public and to your friends on Facebook or Twitter as well as LinkedIn, doesn't deserve you. It's idealistic, and most of us know there's a difference between our professional and personal lives (eg, check your political, religious and potentially disruptive views at the door), but speaking as someone who knows what it's like to work at a company where you have to keep even your benign interests and hobbies secret, it can be soul draining to have to be a different person at work than you are when you get home.?This XKCD comic sums it up pretty well.

The post-hire friend requests are harder to deal with, for obvious reasons, and you should take any direction you're most comfortable. Ultimately though, make sure you do what's comfortable, not what you think is expected. You'll have to deal with the consequences, and sometimes removing someone causes more hassle than not accepting their request in the first place.

The post-employment or pre-interview friend request
While far less common, friend requests from people you used to work with, or a company that's interested in, you are just as tricky. On the bright side, you're in the driver's seat in both cases, so you can decide whether you want to stay in touch with a colleague you used to work with on Facebook, or read their weekend activities on Twitter. You can research a company that wants to connect with you on LinkedIn or Facebook, and decide if you'd like to talk to them about what they have open.

Again, we'd advise caution with Facebook, just because it's such a tome of personal connections and information that you may not want public ? and make no mistake, friending a company or co-workers means that information is public, at least at the office ? but LinkedIn is always a good bet, as is Twitter, mostly because both are designed to be more public than private.

In the end, the network an employer wants to connect with you over makes much of the difference, as does your familiarity with that network's privacy tools. If you're already a master at custom friends lists at Facebook, and your status updates are set to post to a safe list by default, then you probably have no problem friending your boss. If not, or you don't want to tempt fate, it might just be better to apologize for any offense and suggest they head over to LinkedIn and connect with you there, instead.

While it's a little underhanded of your interviewer to dangle a potential job in front of you with a friend request attached, how you handle it ? even if you tell them Facebook is personal and LinkedIn is professional? may land you the gig. Good luck!

Car Donation in Honolulu | Cars for Prostate Cancer

Hawaii Car Donation Plan

Donated cars are not always junkers, but they?re not all classics either. ?They are simply cars which the owner has determined would be more valuable as a charitable donation.

Sometimes, as with a fine old Corvette I once saw sitting in an elderly man?s garage, it hasn?t been driven for many years. ?Other times, the few miles it is driven don?t justify the cost of registration and insurance.

Very often, the tax deduction is the trigger for a vehicle donation. ?Not only does the donor no longer have to bear the unnecessary expenses, they also pay less income tax.

For people who live in a coastal area, and nowhere is there more coast than Hawaii, a boat donation makes sense for many of the same reasons, as do an RV donation or a motor home donation.

We?re excited about the progress of the Prostate Cancer Pony Express. ?It has, in just 10 days, visited with 4 state Governors and raised awareness in hundreds of thousands of people of the importance of early detection of Prostate Cancer.

It?s a Win-Win situation ? lives are saved through increased awareness and early cancer detection AND ?you, the donor, also receive benefits.

Take a minute to call us ? we have all the answers in all 50 states ? 888-885-6710.

The first Packard, made in 1899, had 7.5 horsepower; the last, made in 1958, had 275. ?We?ll gladly accept your donation of either.

Can an Aspirin a Day Keep Cancer Away?

A daily aspirin may cut your risk of cancer, new research suggests. But doctors advise that there's no reason for everyone to start taking it -- at least not yet.

In three studies published in the Lancet and the Lancet Oncology on Tuesday, British researchers analyzed data from more than 50 studies and found that those who took daily aspirin for at least three years were less likely to develop cancer -- and if they did, it tended to be less advanced. Patients who took daily aspirin were 36 percent less likely to be diagnosed with metastatic cancer, or cancer that had already spread throughout their body.

Additionally, individuals taking aspirin for five years or more were 15 percent less likely to die from cancer. Previous research had only shown such benefits for patients taking aspirin for longer periods of time.

Nowhere was the evidence stronger than it was for colon cancer. Researchers found that patients who were diagnosed with localized colon cancer while taking daily aspirin halved the chance that their disease would spread.

Aspirin is a relatively inexpensive and easy-to-take medication that millions of Americans already use. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends men between the ages of 45 and 79 take aspirin daily to prevent heart disease, and they also recommend that women aged 55 to 79 take a daily aspirin to ward off stroke. The notion that this same medication may be able to prevent cancer is significant.

Dana Garmany of Scottsdale, Ariz., was not part of this study -- but he did have cancer. At the time of his diagnosis with advanced colon cancer, he said, his doctors advised him to keep taking the aspirin that he had been taking for about a year due to his family's history of heart disease. Today, 40 months after having the tumor removed and receiving chemotherapy, he remains disease-free.

Garmany said he did not know for sure whether it was the aspirin that prevented his cancer from spreading earlier. But he said taking the aspirin has been easy, and since it may have helped him in his cancer battle as well as his heart health, he added, "I feel like I'm getting two-for-one."

Cancer experts contacted by ABC News said they are excited about what these findings might mean for future research and treatment.

"This is very encouraging information," says Dr. Roy Herbst, Chief of Medical Oncology for the Yale Cancer Center in New Haven, Conn. "It suggests that aspirin could play a very important role in cancer prevention."

"I am intrigued by the consistency of the findings and this is something that can be implemented quickly that people are not opposed to," said Dr. Kristen Moysich, professor of oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y. "It is an easy thing to do."

But precisely how patients like Garmany and others might benefit from aspirin has yet to be fully understood, doctors say.

"No one knows exactly what the mechanism is of how aspirin helps prevent cancer," said Asad Umar, chief of the Gastrointestinal and Other Cancers Research Group of the National Cancer Institute.

Umar said aspirin's anti-inflammatory action might have something to do with the benefits that researchers have seen. Others, like Jay Whelan, suggest aspirin may interfere with the processes in the body that cause tumors to grow.

"Aspirin also probably works in ways that we don't quite understand," said Whelan, who heads the Department of Cellular and Molecular Nutrition at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. "We don't know the mechanism, and it is very difficult to make a blanket public health statement without knowing the mechanism.

"While this backs everything up, I think people should consult their physicians."

The research may not be the last word on aspirin and cancer. Previous studies -- including the large Women's Health Study and the Physicians' Health Study -- have suggested no link between aspirin consumption and reductions in cancer occurrence or cancer-related death. The researchers behind the current study wrote that they excluded these major pieces of research because patients in these studies did not take aspirin on a daily basis.

Even then, the conclusions of the new research do not support a specific dose of aspirin -- so even if there is an effect, those who hope to benefit from it may find themselves at a loss over how much to take.

And although aspirin is a commonly used medicine available over the counter, it is not necessarily safe. People taking aspirin have an increased risk of bleeding, including bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be very dangerous, and the risk of it happening increases with higher doses.

Most agreed that before medical experts can make any concrete recommendations, further study is needed.

"Because these results are new, it will take time for the broader scientific community to evaluate the data in the context of existing knowledge and to consider whether the clinical guidelines should be changed." said Eric Jacobs, strategic director of Pharmaco-Epidemiology at the American Cancer Society, Inc.

"It is important for patients to follow colon cancer guidelines already in place and get their recommended colon cancer screening tests."

ABC News' Lisa Stark contributed to this report.

Kathy Bates to guest on 'Men' as Charlie Harper

By Tierney Bricker, E! Online

Dan Steinberg / AP

Kathy Bates will be playing Charlie Harper's ghost in an upcoming episode of "Two and a Half Men."

Charlie Sheen is returning to "Two and a Half Men" ... kind of!

Sheen's character Charlie Harper, who died off-screen in the beginning of this season of the CBS comedy, is returning to pay his brother Alan (Jon Cryer) a visit after he lands in the hospital. Of course, given Sheen's less-than-ideal parting with the series, there's a twist: He's not playing the character, Kathy Bates is!

Yes, really! So how is this gender-bending casting switcharoo going down?

More from E: When is 'Glee's' graduation? 'House's' big send-off? Fox reveals finale plans!

It's a ghost invasion!

The "Harry's Law" actress is set to guest star as Charlie Harper on the April 30 episode of "Two and a Half Men." The catch? She's playing the ghost of Charlie who returns in the form of Bates to visit Alan after he suffers a minor heart attack and lands in the hospital.

While this does seem to be one pretty random casting choice, there is a connection between Bates and "Two and a Half Men": "Harry's Law" and the CBS sitcom are both produced by Warner Bros. Sure, it's a stretch, but it's still a connection.

We're sure Sheen isn't sweating this casting coup too much: He's busy filming his new series "Anger Management" for FX.

This will be Alan's second trip to the hospital this season: He ended up in a mental institution alongside Gary Busey after having a mental breakdown.

What do you think of this casting news? Are you excited to see Bates play Charlie Harper? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

Yancey Home Improvements Promote Sacramento Roof Repair at ...

Sacramento, CA ? March 19, 2012 ? Yancey Home Improvements ? For a limited time only, GAF Master Elite roofing contractor Yancey Home Improvements is offering homeowners the chance to enjoy professional Sacramento roof repair services at a fraction of the regular cost.

Yancey Home Improvement Services already provides no-obligations price estimates and on-site consultations for prospective customers.

To inspire buyer confidence and to enable households to afford professional roof care services, the roofing company plans to deduct some $1,250 off the final price of any new re-roofing project.

Additionally, the staff confirmed that the accounting department will automatically apply a 10% discount to any confirmed jobs booked online.

Aside from performing roofing services, the company is known to install patio covers and sunrooms.

Price Still the Top Misconception Linked to Professional Sacramento Roof Repair Services

The current promo is not only designed to attract customers but to also educate homeowners on the importance of appointing professionals for roofing projects, Yancey Home Improvements added.

The company said that many homeowners continue to link professional roofing services with expensive fees when the service charge actually pays off in terms of quality, safety, and risk management.

  • Quality. Professional services minimize the need for re-working a job. They eliminate the additional effort, expenses, and inconveniences of having to do a job all over again.
  • Safety. There are obvious dangers that working on the roof presents and these can lead to serious injuries, if not death. Licensed professionals will have the proper gear and procedures to mitigate these risks.
  • Risk Management. A single roofing accident can wipe away homeowner?s savings in the absence of a worker?s compensation insurance and liability insurance plans that all licensed roofing specialists are required to produce.

Recession Not an Excuse to Put Off Roof Repairs

The real estate industry was one of the hardest hit sectors by the Great Recession.

Still, hard times which pushed homeowners to tighten belts and put off home spending at a later date need not literally come at the expense of people?s roofs, Yancey Home Improvements opined.

According to a business and finance commentary published at Slate, during the crisis, few of the homeowners who managed to keep their properties had to reportedly accommodate family members under the same roof when members were normally expected to move out, get jobs, and find their own place as they turn 18.

It is cases like these that compel us to promote roof repair services to households all the more, said Yancey Home Improvements.

?Rain or shine, recession or not, the roof still is an integral part of the home. The structure requires care ? especially when it is protecting the heads and health of several family members.?

HBT: Carpenter takes 'good step' with simulated game

Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter took a big step in the right direction Sunday, throwing two simulated innings to a group of teammates in camp.

Carpenter was diagnosed earlier this month with a bulging cervical disc in his neck and has not yet appeared in a Grapefruit League game. But he?s beginning to make progress and might not have to miss a turn in the regular-season starting rotation if he?s able to avoid setbacks from here on out.

?It was a good step,? Carpenter told reporters after Sunday?s workout, per Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. ?I was excited to get back out there and throw a little bit. Now we move on to the next step. Hopefully, I wake up good enough tomorrow and go out and do that again sometime soon.?

Carpenter will need at least three exhibition outings to get properly geared up for April.

The 36-year-old right-hander registered a 3.45 ERA and 191/55 K/BB ratio across a league-leading 237 1/3 innings last year for the Cardinals before going 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in six postseason starts.
