Tax Relief For Homeowners Hurt By Sandy - Business Insider

On his personal website, Mike Bloomberg recently announced property tax relief measures to help homeowners who suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy.

From Bloomerg?s website:

To provide immediate relief, the Finance Department, with the authorization of the City Council, will issue an interest-free extension on the next property tax bill for residential properties damaged beyond repair or in need of extensive structural repairs before they can be re-inhabited. The grace period will postpone payments due on January 1, 2013 to April 1, 2013.

The interest-free extension applies to all properties that received a red tag ? notice of required structural repairs ? from the Department of Buildings. Mayor Bloomberg has also enacted other homeowner relief programs enacted since Sandy, including NYC Rapid Repairs, a $500 million program which helps restore utilities to damaged areas.

The City requires the State Legislature to approve another measure that would reimburse homeowners for a portion of this year?s property taxes.

The total damage from Hurricane Sandy has been estimated at $62 billion.

Dallas trucker talks about time in Mexican prison

DALLAS (AP) ? A Texas trucker arrested after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border with 268,000 bullets said Wednesday that he feared for his safety during seven months in a Mexican prison with nine people in a cell with only five beds.

Jabin Bogan said he slept on the floor for most of the time. He worried the Spanish-speaking inmates around him were conspiring to hurt him, although none ever physically attacked him.

"You never know what's going on," Bogan said. "You're surrounded by people that don't speak your language, so you never know what they talk about."

Bogan gave new details about his release at a news conference in his hometown of Dallas. He returned to the U.S. on Friday after being freed from prison the week before.

Bogan maintains he was on his way to Phoenix to deliver the ammunition in April when he took a wrong highway exit and accidentally crossed the border into Mexico. Despite his insistence that it was an honest mistake, the 27-year-old was arrested in Ciudad Juarez, just across the border from El Paso, and taken to a Mexican maximum security prison.

He was convicted of smuggling and sentenced to three years in prison, but that was later commuted to time served and a fine.

Bogan's U.S. attorney, Larry Taylor, said about $5,000 in donations covered a fine paid to Mexican authorities and fees for an attorney there.

Taylor and Bogan declined to say whether Mexican authorities had banned him from returning to the country.

Bogan said he relied on a cellmate who spoke Spanish to navigate prison life. Otherwise, he said, it was "like me against 10,000 people." He said he did not see any other black Americans in the prison.

He said he didn't eat prison food at first and eventually made it through his time by imagining that what he was being served was a cheeseburger or slice of pizza. His first meal on the plane ride home was from Burger King.

Bogan said he was first told an investigation would take two days.

"Forty-eight hours turned into seven months," he said.

Mexican authorities have tried to crack down on smuggling of weapons and ammunition across the U.S.-Mexico border. Mexican President Felipe Calderon has blamed U.S. gun laws for allowing weapons to flow into Mexico, where rival drug cartels are fighting a bloody war.

But Mexican customs agents contradicted prosecutors' claims at Bogan's Mexican trial that he had hidden the bullets under the floorboards of his 18-wheeler's trailer. Bogan had tried to make a U-turn, but was stopped by customs.

An appeal filed in August by Bogan's lawyer in Mexico, Emilio de la Rosa, reduced the charge from smuggling to possession of military ammunition. That reduced Bogan's sentence and allowed him to get supervised release, which he can do by mail.

Food Network Kitchen eatery opens at Fla. airport

11 hrs.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --?The Food Network is getting into the restaurant business in a location not always associated with good food: An airport.

The channel has opened its first Food Network Kitchen at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in South Florida in the JetBlue terminal.

"The dynamic of food and travel has changed," said Sergei Kuharsky, general manager of Food Network's new business enterprises. "You used to never go in and think about eating at an airport."

Now, with passengers arriving early to get through security and limited options for in-flight food, there's a market for airport dining. "We are responding to that opportunity," Kuharsky said.

The Food Network Kitchen is the only eatery serving hot food at the JetBlue concourse. But it's the brand that gets attention from travelers as much as the lack of alternatives.

"I walked by and I said 'Oh wow, look at that. Food Network restaurant.' So I came in," said Richard Wierzbicki of Austin, Texas. "And I would look for it again because I thought the sandwich was really good."

Since opening Nov. 8, the Food Network Kitchen has averaged 1,500 customers a day.

"Airport locations are very busy, but this one especially," said Jean-Pierre Turgot, general manager for Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, which partnered with the Food Network to provide chef-inspired meals at the airport and is also a partner in Food Network-branded food sold at concession stands and stadiums. "It's the highest revenue producer at the airport."

There are no waiters, so customers sit at tables after ordering at the counter or they can get takeout food, either made to order or readymade items like sandwiches and salads.

While the recipes are developed and branded by the Food Network, the offerings are not named for Food Network personalities, shows or chefs. Instead, the menu promises organic and sustainable ingredients and offers dishes with connections to local ingredients and regional culture, such as a Florida shrimp po'boy ($13) and a salmon burger with Key lime mayo ($14).

South Florida's Latin culture is reflected in items such as the Cuban breakfast burrito ($8) and a black beans and rice burger with "mojo mayo" ($12). Also on the menu: fried pickles with Key lime mayo ($6); sweet potato fries with Key lime tartar sauce ($5); and a Cuban sandwich ($12) with cafe con leche mayo pressed on a ciabatta roll.

Wait times can back up when flights arrive and the airport gets busy, so it's best to arrive early if you plan to sit down, as Liz Lamoureux did before flying back home to San Antonio, Texas.

"On our way here, I was saying we wanted to get here early to sit down for a drink," she said as she nibbled on edamame and sipped on the house pinot grigio.

Beverages range from espresso to entwine, the Food Network's wine brand, to locally-inspired cocktails like Lansky's Run, named for the Prohibition-era gangster Meyer Lansky.

The design of the restaurant resembles the cable network's test kitchen: a butcher block bar counter, subway tiling, stainless steel surfaces and pots and pans hanging in a row ? only here, they hang behind a cash register.

The network's logo is plastered on everything from to-go boxes to brown paper bags filled with jelly beans and chocolate-covered pretzels. Most of the TVs are tuned to the Food Network, though some show sports or news. There are also some fun facts on display: A poster near the cash register details local ingredients used in the meals, while paper placemats explain how to filet a fish and describe different cuts of beef.

"We really wanted to bring our culinary expertise to the forefront and bring the brand to life," Food Network's Kuharsky said. "I think people are going to be drawn to the brand, but it also comes down to taste."

But while the network has already put its name on consumer products like frying pans and candles, along with its concession stand and stadium food, serving quality food at an airport restaurant presents different challenges.

"Branding on the front lines has the most exposure and is different than putting your name on a logo," said Chris Tripoli, president of A'la Carte Foodservice Consulting Group, who has worked on food concepts in airports across the country. "Now that you have exposed yourself to the end user, your reputation, that Food Network brand, is going to be judged on the temperature of the green beans that day or by every bite of the sandwich."

Tripoli added that Food Network staffers on the restaurant's front lines "know their brand is only going to be as good as their last meal."

The Food Network and Delaware North Companies plan to open more outlets in the spring at the busy JetBlue terminal. Another Food Network Kitchen is scheduled to open at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by the end of 2013.?

Cuomo: Sandy cost NY, NYC $32B in damage and loss

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Top political leaders in New York put their heads together Monday on big requests for federal disaster aid as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that Superstorm Sandy ran up a bill of $32 billion in the state and the nation's largest city.

The cost is for repairs and restoration and does not include an additional accounting of over $9 billion to head off damage in the next disastrous storm, including steps to protect the power grid and cellphone network.

"It's common sense; it's intelligent," Cuomo said. "Why don't you spend some money now to save money in the future? And that's what prevention and mitigation is."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg had announced earlier in the day that Sandy caused $19 billion in losses in New York City ? part of the $32 billion estimate Cuomo used.

New York taxpayers, Cuomo said, can't foot the bill.

"It would incapacitate the state. ... Tax increases are always a last, last, last resort."

Cuomo met with New York's congressional delegation to discuss the new figures and present "less than a wish list." The delegation, Cuomo and Bloomberg will now draw up a request for federal disaster aid.

States typically get 75 percent reimbursement for the cost of governments to restore mass transit and other services after a disaster.

The most basic recovery costs for roads, water systems, schools, parks, individual assistance and more total $15 billion in New York City; $7 billion for state agencies; $6.6 billion in Nassau County and $1.7 billion in Suffolk County, both on suburban Long Island; and $527 million in Westchester County and $143 million in Rockland County, both north of New York City, according to a state document used in the private briefing of the delegation and obtained by The Associated Press.

Hard times were already facing the state and city governments that were staring at deficits of more than $1 billion before Sandy hit in late October. State tax receipts have also missed projections, showing a continued slow recovery from a recession that could hit taxpayers in the governments' budgets this spring. And there's the looming fiscal cliff, the combination of expiring federal tax cuts and major spending cuts that could rattle the economy.

"Make no mistake, this will not be an easy task, particularly given the impending fiscal cliff, and a Congress that has been much less friendly to disaster relief than in the past," Schumer said. "We will work with the (Obama) administration on supplemental legislation, to be introduced in the upcoming December session of Congress, that will set us on the road to meeting New York's needs. This will be an effort that lasts not weeks, but many months, and we will not rest until the federal response meets New York's deep and extensive needs."

Rep. Peter King, a Long Island Republican who, like Schumer, is a powerful member of his chamber, said he is seeking cooperation from House leaders to find enough disaster aid.

"It really is survival," King said. "This is an emergency. This should be separate of all the debate about the fiscal cliff and everything else."

The Cuomo administration has gained the public support of President Barack Obama and FEMA in New York's proposal for full reimbursement for storm damage, but state officials have privately worried about how much the state can get now.

In the city, Bloomberg is asking federal lawmakers to put up nearly $10 billion to reimburse government agencies and private businesses. That would be additional funding on an expedited basis over the $5.4 billion in standard disaster aid that the city projects it will receive from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

That FEMA money and private insurance won't cover all the public and private expenses from the storm, which included damaged streets and restaurants closed because of flooding, Bloomberg said.

"While the impact of the storm will be felt for some time and the challenges are great, I am confident that the city will rebound and emerge stronger than ever," Bloomberg wrote to the congressional delegation.

Reinsurance company Swiss Re showed the extent of private sector pain. It estimates that claims stemming from Sandy will cost the company about $900 million and that total losses from insured damage will be between $20 billion and $25 billion.

Reinsurance firms provide coverage to insurance companies for great losses stemming from events like natural disasters.

Other states are seeking federal assistance, too. FEMA has already paid out nearly $250 million in New Jersey, where Gov. Chris Christie says the preliminary damage estimate is $29.4 billion and could rise.

Native Americans, U.S. settle $3.4 billion lawsuit

HELENA, Mont. (AP) ? After nearly 17 years of courtroom arguments, congressional negotiations and Indian Country bickering, hundreds of thousands of Native Americans could see the first payments of a $3.4 billion U.S. government settlement by the end of the year, plaintiffs' attorneys said Monday.

The settlement between American Indians across the nation and the government over more than a century's worth of squandered and mismanaged land trust royalties became final on Friday, when the appeal period expired.

One of the largest U.S. government settlements in history began with a lawsuit filed in 1996 by Elouise Cobell of Browning, Mont. The Blackfeet leader observed that those who leased Indian land made money from its natural resources, while the Indians themselves remained in poverty with no accounting of the royalties from that land that were held in trust for them by the government

Cobell herself led the fight against the government for more than 15 years before she died of cancer last year.

"We all are happy that this settlement can finally be implemented," lead attorney Dennis Gingold said in a statement Monday. "We deeply regret that Ms. Cobell did not live to see this day."

Approximately 350,000 beneficiaries could start receiving $1,000 checks by Christmas as the first part of the settlement goes forward, plaintiffs' attorneys said.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar released a statement that said the settlement marks a step forward in reconciliation and a new era in how the government administers its trusts.

"With the settlement now final, we can put years of discord behind us and start a new chapter in our nation-to-nation relationship," Salazar said.

The agreement will pay out $1.5 billion to two classes of beneficiaries. Each member of the first class would be paid $1,000. Each member of the second class would be paid $800 plus a share of the balance of the settlement funds as calculated by a formula based on the activity in their trust accounts.

Another $1.9 billion would be used by the government to purchase fractionated land allotments from willing individuals and turn those consolidated allotments over to the tribe. An education scholarship for young Indians also would be established under the agreement.

Congress approved the deal in December 2010 and U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan approved it after a June 2011 hearing. Hogan said that while the settlement may not be as much as some wished, the deal ended the legal deadlock and provided some certainty for the beneficiaries.

Cobell traveled across Indian Country to explain the deal, but there was opposition. One opponent, Kimberly Craven of Boulder, Colo., took her objections to the Supreme Court, saying the settlement did not include an actual accounting for how much money the government lost and that the deal would overcompensate a select few beneficiaries.

The Supreme Court declined to take up her petition.

Business Networking is Good for Franchises | Franchwire

This is a guest post from The Franchise King?, Joel Libava.? He provides tips and advice to individuals interested in franchise ownership with his top-notch guaranteed franchise ownership advisory services and to the masses via his award-winning franchise blog. He?s on Twitter constantly @FranchiseKing.

Have you been out and about, networking? Do lots of people in your community know who you are and what business you?re the proud owner of?

Do you know why it?s so important for you, the independent or franchise business owner, to do it?

I do, and I?m going to share 3 powerful benefits of networking.

1.? Visibility

People are busy. They?re what my Mom calls, ?Running and chasing? all the time. If they?re not working, they?re running errands, helping their family members with miscellaneous things, or doing other life-stuff.

At the same time, they?re getting bombarded with thousands of marketing messages.

And, unless you?re marketing budget is unlimited, those marketing messages aren?t always coming from you.

That?s why you need to be visible. And, networking allows you to do just that.

Visibility can come from things like;

  • Being a member of a committee at your local chamber of commerce
  • Being a sponsor for one of your community?s school sports teams
  • Becoming heavily involved in a charity

The bottom line is this; become a visible member of your community. If you do that, it will be a bit harder for marketing messages from other concerns to get through to your current and future customers. Plus, you?ll feel good about yourself, because you?ll be a contributing member of your community

2.? Drumming

If you?re the owner of the local Domino?s franchise, networking is a must.

And, because of the product you sell, you have a serious advantage over most of the other local businesses in your community; you can drum up new business by handing out free pizza.

Other types of businesses don?t have it so easy.

For example, if you?re the owner of the local Hardware store, what can you give away for free to drum up business?

If you?re a gas-station owner, what can you carry around from business to business-or even house to house that can help bring in new customers?

If you own a picture framing store, what can you bring to a networking event to give away?

In this example, being the owner of a pizza franchise clearly rules.

(If you own a non-pizza business, please share some of things that you?ve successfully done to drum up business as you network. Franchwire readers would love to hear about your success!)

3.? Advice

If you?re attending networking events, including formal ones like BNI, there will be numerous opportunities for you to forge deep connections with other like-minded business owners. These connections-if nurtured properly, can become resources for you and your business.

For example, what if you?re thinking of adding another location?

Now, obviously you?ll reach out to the commercial real estate agent who helped you secure your current business location. But, why would you want to only use one resource to help you find a suitable second location? There?s a certain amount of risk involved; you want an opportunity to look at all the options available?not just the ones that are being offered by the agent that helped you last time.

If you?ve been networking for a while, you have a built-in advice network that?s only a phone call or an email away. This is the time to use it!

Call the owners of a couple of non-competing businesses and ask them if they know of any commercial space that?s available-or about to become available. There?s a good chance that they?ve, ?heard things.? You may even get some unsolicited advice along the way that ends up saving you some money. Who knows what you?ll hear?

I know one thing for sure:

Small business owners who commit to spending some of their time networking and getting active in their communities have a huge leg up on those that don?t.

Email Marketing Conversion Tips: 7 Simple Ways To Increase Email ...

boost open rates1 468x1024 Email Marketing Conversion Tips: 7 Simple Ways To Increase Email Open Rates

My jaw dropped when a good friend and an experienced marketer asked me this question the other day?

Thinking that I might be able to help her, she asked, ?I am getting 50-65% open rate for my emails now?How do I increase that??

40-50%? Really?

I had to confirm that with her again, just to make sure I heard her right.

?So, how many subscribers did you send to, to get 50-60% open rate? A list of perhaps 5 subscribers??- I asked her facetiously.

I have to confess?50-65% is a high open rate for my list. I?ll be lucky to get half that number.

The conversation turned around from me giving advice, to me seeking advice from her?and I am thankful to her for that.

Over the years, I have seen a HUGE drop in Email open rates.

From 70-80% a few years back, down to frightenly low numbers ? which of course had me a little worried.

I desperately wanted to know her secret.

She was kind enough to let me pick her brain and jot down some key things that she was doing?

And since you are a fellow marketer and dear subscriber, I want to share some of the tips I learned?

1. A Fresh Look From Time To Time.

As a company, we use an HTML template that displays our brand/logo on the email. I had been using the same template for the past two years.

But if you?ve been a subscriber for some time, you may have noticed the change recently.

If you are using a template that looks outdated, try changing it. Or, try switching your e-mail from text to HTML.

2. Find your perfect time and stick to it.

If you are a market who emails your list quite often, test the time of delivery that works for your subscribers and STICK WITH IT.

Through testing I?ve found the perfect time to send out my emails. Now, I stick to it religiously.

Once you?ve found your perfect time and stick with it, your subscribers will come to expect your e-mails.

To help yourself, try creating an e-mail schedule.

3. Use The Headline And First Sentence Effectively.

It?s no secret that your subject line is responsible for your open rates.

But did you know there?s another key thing subscribers see when they are deciding to read your e-mail?

It?s the first sentence inside the e-mail.

Most email programs like gmail and yahoo display the first sentence of the email, in light grey text below the subject line.

I typically receive emails where the first line inside the e-mail reads:?Click here if you cannot see this email correctly.? ? Hardly attention grabbing!

4. Using The Correct From Name.

We receive emails that we automatically hit delete, because the ?from name? shows a domain name, or something we are not familiar with.

Use your first and last name as the from address.

5. Send Exclusive Emails

My subscribers often get special offer emails and personal experiences and tips (like the one you?re reading now) that I share with them ONLY through e-mail ? - and can?t be found on our company blog.

6. Tell Readers What?s Coming Next.

Whenever possible, I try to tell my readers what?s coming next. Especially if it?s a content that flows well with what they have just read.

Hint towards what content is coming up to draw people into the next e-mail.

7. Treat your email subscribers like you treat your best friends.

You wouldn?t be phony with a friend, would you? There is a certain kind of openness about us, when we are with our best friends.

Get to know people on your list whenever possible and you will know how to connect with them using email, and how to tailor offers and content for them.

These are 7 things you can implement in your email marketing campaigns, starting today, and begin seeing more and more people open your emails.

Increasing the number of people who OPEN your email is the first step to more traffic and sales!

Sincerely,
Abe Cherian

Fixing Broken Fitness Promises | The Best Life Blog: Fitness, Weight ...

Posted By Donna Fennessy on November 25, 2012

Remember how several months ago, I vowed to get back to the gym? Well, I have a confession: I didn?t keep my promise?not even close. I thought I had run out of excuses for avoiding exercise. But what do you know? I managed to find a few more. To be completely honest, the only gym-related task that has been on my to-do list since April was calling to cancel unlimited babysitting. Why pay the $20 monthly fee when neither me nor my kids have seen the inside of the gym in months?

But then one morning, after a near mental breakdown from the combination of work stress, family stress and life stress, my husband urged me to go back to the gym. He offered to stay with the kids (who, to refresh your memory, enjoy the gym?s day care center about as much as most adults enjoy a trip to the DMV) in the morning on the days he goes into work late. And my work typically doesn?t get busy until a little later in the day?so why not?

I wrestled with a little guilt?my husband also belongs to the gym and never gets to go. Somehow, I managed to push that aside and laced up my sneakers. And it did me good. Not only did I burn calories and strengthen my long-ignored muscles, but I learned that I deserve some form of escape, a way to release all of that stress.

I went regularly for a few weeks, and then Hurricane Sandy hit. Suddenly, I was too busy scavenging for gas to worry about getting to the gym. Exercise seemed like a luxury, and I was in survival mode. But when I thought about it, I realized I was still getting in plenty of activity. We spent more time outdoors since there was no TV, kicking around a soccer ball or just walking around the neighborhood to see how the storm had damaged our quiet neighborhood. We walked a little more since gas was so limited. We carried heavy gas cans from the station to our cars, and from our cars to our generator.

Thankfully, things have settled back down again. I have to admit, I am looking forward to getting back to the gym again. This time, I really mean it?I promise!

NYC storm victims' homes looted over Thanksgiving

NEW YORK (AP) ? Some residents of a New York City neighborhood that suffered fire and flooding during Superstorm Sandy say thieves looted their damaged houses over Thanksgiving.

The New York Post reports (http://bit.ly/QgcssM ) that thieves struck at least three homes in the Breezy Point section of Queens.

One couple lost a $25,000 coin collection along with jewelry and watches.

The break-ins occurred Wednesday or Thursday when many residents were away for the holiday.

Robert Bainbridge says looters took $400 in two change jars. He says he's trying to repair his flooded home and the theft "adds insult to injury."

The Post reports that there were 14 home break-ins in Breezy Point from Nov. 12 to Nov. 18. There were none during the same period last year.

Organic Wine for Health Benefits | Health Food x Drinks - Gillespie ...

Wine is the perfect complement to many foods, be it breakfast, lunch or dessert. You can use it in cooking certain culinary items, to impart an abundant taste and smell. And there are various benefits related to drinking wine. A kind of wine that is all the rage nowadays and it is quickly gaining kudos in the elitist and regular wine folk, is organic wine.

    Organic Wine

Guess what happens wine is, and so its vast amounts of fans around the world. Included in this, the majority likes it because of its taste, the relaxing effects and also the health benefits, while a few are dead against it as it is after all an alcoholic drink which people do not encourage use of alcohol. No pesticides, no fertilizers, no herbicides or fungicides ? basically something that is not meant to be a component, such elements are absent from organic wines. Which over time is better for you, the customer. Chemicals, if ingested, build up and collect in your body and degrade your body gradually. Wine should be fruity having a rich chemical-free taste, this really is promised in an organic wine.

    Sulfurless Property

Organic wines don?t contain sulfur dioxide or any sulfur based preservatives. So for all those with sulfur or sulfur products allergies, this really is good news. Traditional wines contain sulfur dioxide to permit the wine to age or perhaps be kept. Organic wines have only biological sulfur, this too in minuscule amounts, approximately 10 mg per liter. Sulfur dioxide in wine may cause very serious allergic reactions and it has been linked to enhancing the chances of getting a hangover.

    Considerations

A 5-oz. glass of wine or 12 oz. of beer (one bottle) is equivalent to one drink. One drink each day for women, two for males, is considered a safe and beneficial amount. Excessive drinking will produce negative health effects.

    Fight Heart Disease

A daily glass of wine could raise the blood?s level of inflammation-fighting omega-3 fatty acids.

JobsOhio's Thrive in Ohio ads run through early December. Officials say they're designed to spread the word about Ohio people and businesses thriving economically and draw others to Ohio.

The campaign includes a mix of television, print and online advertising. It features a 30-second television commercial on most major networks in the state and print ads in major newspapers in Ohio and around the country. A ThriveInOhio.com website has also been launched to share success stories.

Car Auctions ? How to Invest in A Bargain Car | Aero Yoga

Every month thousands of cars are seized by the government, banks and police. These cars are seized from laws and order broken by individuals, firms or companies, people that are captured driving without license, incomplete particulars and unregistered cars Those seized through the banks are due to unpaid loans that mean the financial institution has to sell what they collected as collateral as a way to make back their money plus some interest. Quite often these cars can be purchased at a cheap rate. A method called car auctions can be used to sell these vehicles. It takes place within major cities in Ough. S. A, U. K, Australia and the delicate procedure for Europe. Bidding starts just $100 for every car whether new or old.
In addition, most of these grabbed cars are got from the wharf due to their owners wish to meet the requirement to clear them or they?re among contrabands goods that are not allowed into the country. All cars models can be found ranging from Cadillac, Benz, Honda, Suzuki, BMW, even bikes, boats, aircraft, trucks and buses are available for auction both old and new. This is an alternative way to buy a cheap auto if one feels the retail outlets is more expensive.
Secrets of Bidding and Winning at Car Auctions
You should definitely have enough money in your bank account to replace with your check. Some auctions require a bank draft so be prepared early.
Make sure the contract states if the title indication light was red, yellow or green. If the car you bought turned into a red light title problem afterwards when they indicated it was green then you ask them to by the neck. Beside the auctioneer there is a traffic light with red-colored, yellow and green lights. These lights define the status from the car?s title. Red light means there are problems with the title and its rebuilt. Yellow light means that the title is in transit or there is some frame damage. When you buy at a car auction you would want to have the title immediately since you should pay in full. Green light means that everything is ok with the title.
Go the auction early to get your choice. The earlier the much better, overcome the crowds, avoid distractions to check out for any kind of cars you want.
You may notice the cars you like, check all doors, trunk, hood and look for the VIN# stickers and make sure they all match. If they don?t match, it is either the vehicle was stolen or it had been in a wreck and fixed with part from another car. They are two styles to make use of to check the VIN#. Use your phone to call someone using a computer and tell him to operate the Auto Check Vehicle History Report or make use of your wireless pocket COMPUTER to browse it yourself. When you?ve got got a blackberry, tell someone at home towards the Auto Check Reports for you personally and email it to your blackberry. After you know a brief history of the car at the auction, never relay on any title checks given by the auction, always verify your own.

Rolling Stones try to roll back the years with reunion

LONDON (Reuters) - The Rolling Stones return to the stage on Sunday for a mini-tour they hope will prove that advancing years and bad blood are no barriers to satisfaction for sellout crowds.

In a burst of activity to celebrate 50 years in business, the veteran British rockers with an average age of 68 have produced a photo book, written two songs, collaborated on a documentary, released a greatest hits album, played warm-up gigs in Paris and committed to five concerts.

They also faced questions about high ticket prices to the two gigs in London and three in the United States that have given some followers the impression they are more interested in banking cash than bashing out the hits.

Yet that has done little to dampen broad enthusiasm for their return to the big stage five years after the "A Bigger Bang" tour became the most lucrative in pop history at the time, earning nearly $560 million.

Adding to the sense of occasion, the full-time quartet of Mick Jagger on vocals, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums will be joined by former members Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor at London's O2 Arena on Sunday.

Even before they step out for the first of two gigs in the British capital, the question on every Stones fan's lips is what more they have up their sleeves, amid hints of a full tour and the possibility of a new studio album.

"It would be nice to think that wouldn't be it," said Paul Sexton, a music journalist who has met and interviewed the band in the run-up to the latest concerts.

"Once the machine gets fired up again, it's hard to imagine there won't be more live shows to come. If these dates went well, you could imagine sufficient momentum for some kind of recording project."

    BICKERING, BUT NO DIVORCE

The Stones first played at the Marquee Club in London in 1962, and with a changing lineup that settled with today's foursome the band who had to compete with the Beatles quickly became one of the biggest groups in pop history.

Their blues-infused output slowed from the 1980s, and some critics argue they peaked in the 1960s and 70s, but the Stones' longevity and a catalogue of hits like "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Honky Tonk Women" have ensured the music world still cares.

Despite the promise of a major payout and another chance to enhance their legacy, the 50th anniversary celebrations were not always a certainty.

Jagger and Richards have bickered in the past and were at it again recently with Richards calling the charismatic frontman "unbearable" amid a stream of insults in his 2010 memoir "Life".

He eventually apologized, clearing the way for the reunion.

"If you was married to somebody for 50 years, you can have your little spats here and there, and we don't mind having them in public occasionally," the guitarist told Rolling Stone magazine. "We can't get divorced - we're doing it for the kids!"

The Stones will play two gigs at the O2 Arena, where tickets cost 95 to 950 pounds ($1,500) for a VIP seat, before crossing the Atlantic for a show at Barclay Center, Brooklyn on December 8 and two at the Prudential Center, Newark on December 13 and 15.

Jagger has been quick to defend the pricing, saying that the shows were expensive to stage and tickets being traded on secondary sites for greater than their face value did not mean more money for the band.

As to what the five concerts could lead to, Richards said in a recent interview: "My experience with the Rolling Stones is that once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain't gonna stop."

Jagger and Richards are the only two members of the Stones who were there at its inception in 1962. Watts joined in early 1963 and Wood was recruited in the mid-1970s to replace Mick Taylor when he left.

They are widely acknowledged as the greatest rock and roll band in history, producing more than 20 studio albums, selling an estimated 200 million copies, conquering the United States and charting the social and sexual mores of their time.

Their longevity is all the more surprising given their reputation for living in the fast lane. Wood is in his third year of sobriety after struggling with alcohol addiction and Richards said he is drinking less and "gave up smack" (heroin).

Somber vigil for 'Macho' Camacho in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) ? Family and friends of former boxing champion Hector 'Macho' Camacho kept a somber vigil Friday at the hospital in Puerto Rico where he remains on life support.

Doctors in San Juan have said Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting earlier this week in his hometown of Bayamon. But relatives and friends told The Associated Press they are still wrestling with whether to remove him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," said former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Camacho's oldest son, Hector Camacho Jr., told reporters his father has not been disconnected from an artificial respirator and that he believes he is still alive.

"My father is a boxer and we're going to let him fight for his life," he said. "The doctors have said a lot of things, but he is alive, he's in the fight."

Two of Camacho's sisters have asked that he remain on life support until Saturday.

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.

As some relatives and friends continued to pray for a miracle, condolences kept coming in for the boxer's family and preparations have begun for memorials and a funeral Mass.

Gov. Luis Fortuno said he lamented what he called a sudden loss.

"'Macho' will always be remembered for his spontaneity and charisma in and out of the ring," he said.

Also offering condolences was governor-elect Alejandro Garcia Padilla, who defeated Fortuno in November.

"The life of Macho Camacho, like other great athletes of ours, united the country," he said. "We celebrated his triumphs in the streets and we applauded him with noble sportsmanship when he didn't prevail."

Camacho was shot Tuesday night as he sat in a car with a friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, who was killed in the attack. Police spokesman Alex Diaz said officers found nine small bags of cocaine in the friend's pocket, and a 10th bag open inside the car.

Police have made no arrests and continue to interview potential witnesses. Capt. Rafael Rosa told reporters Friday that they are tracking down several leads, but added that very few witnesses are cooperating. He declined to say whether police have identified any suspects.

Camacho Jr. lamented the violence that has consumed Puerto Rico, a U.S. island territory of nearly 4 million people that reported a record 1,117 homicides last year.

"Death, jail, drugs, killings," he said. "That's what the streets are now."

Camacho's sisters have said they would like to fly Camacho's body to New York and bury him there. Camacho grew up mostly in Harlem, earning the nickname the "Harlem Heckler."

He won super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight world titles in the 1980s and fought high-profile bouts against Felix Trinidad, Julio Cesar Chavez and Sugar Ray Leonard. Camacho knocked out Leonard in 1997, ending the former champ's final comeback attempt. Camacho had a career record of 79-6-3.

Camacho also battled drug, alcohol and other problems throughout his life. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison on burglary charges, but a judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation. A wife also filed domestic abuse complaints against him twice before their divorce.

Pest Control Tips For Travelers During The Holidays | Pro Pacific ...

Bed bugs are not the only pests hitching a ride back to home, sweet home after the holiday travels. There are a variety of pests to keep an eye out for in order to make the unwinding transition from vacation to back to reality as painless as possible ? because a thriving pest infestation in your home is not the best way to ring in the New Year.

With holiday travel in full swing, it couldn?t hurt to brush up on prevention techniques to ensure you don?t return with more travelers than you came with. ?As seen in previous years, bed bug awareness and prevention methods flooded the news to deter infestations. While this is probably still the most popular pest to look out for during the winter season, you may want to consider other threats.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Jamaica have recently teamed up in an effort to create awareness about invasive pests that can be transported via luggage from international passengers. The collaborative program, which began in mid-October, is titled ?Don?t Pack a Pest?. Posters and a 60-second video have been created and posted in Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay to warn travelers of potential risks.

Jamaica is the first country within the Caribbean to implement this program.

The pests of concern are mealy bugs and army beat worms. These pests can travel unnoticeably via luggage bags or suitcases resulting in an unsuspecting surprise if not cautious. There are a few precautions to consider when traveling during the festive season.

    During Vacation

Do some preliminary investigation when you arrive at your destination. Before unzipping your bags and making yourself at home ? inspect your room and bed for signs of bugs. Check underneath sheets, box spring, and the headboards of beds. Behind the mattress seams is a popular location to find bed bugs.

Always try to keep your clothes confined in a single area and zip up your bags when not in use.

    Post-Vacation

Upon returning home from your trip, don?t immediately unload your clothes into the laundry hamper. Instead, casually inspect your clothing items and luggage (not on bed) before stowing away in a closet. When you wash your used clothing, try to use high temperatures to kill any invasive bugs.

Your return from traveling can run seamlessly with just a few inspections and techniques. Don?t let a few stealthy bugs create a headache for you, when you want to relax from a action-packed trip.

(AP) ? The Gaza cease-fire deal reached Wednesday marks a startling trajectory for Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi: an Islamist leader who refuses to talk to Israelis or even say the country's name mediated for it and finally turned himself into Israel's de facto protector.

The accord inserts Egypt to an unprecedented degree into the conflict between Israel and Hamas, establishing it as the arbiter ensuring that militant rocket fire into Israel stops and that Israel allows the opening of the long-blockaded Gaza Strip and stops its own attacks against Hamas.

In return, Morsi emerged as a major regional player. He won the trust of the United States and Israel, which once worried over the rise of an Islamist leader in Egypt but throughout the week-long Gaza crisis saw him as the figure most able to deliver a deal with Gaza's Hamas rulers.

"I want to thank President Morsi for his personal leadership to de-escalate the situation in Gaza and end the violence," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who met Morsi on Wednesday, said at a Cairo press conference with Egypt's foreign minister announcing the accord.

"This is a critical moment for the region. Egypt's new government is assuming the responsibility and leadership that has long made this country a cornerstone of regional stability and peace," she said.

After Israel launched its assault on Gaza a week ago, aimed at stopping militant rocket fire, Morsi's palace in a Cairo suburb became the Middle East's diplomacy central.

He held talks with Turkey's prime minister and the emir of Qatar, Germany's foreign minister and a host of top Arab officials to get them behind his mediation. An Israeli envoy flew secretly into Cairo for talks with Egyptian security officials, though Morsi did not meet or speak directly with any Israelis.

Throughout it all, Morsi and his aides sided openly with Hamas, accusing Israel of starting the assault and condemning its bombardment, which has killed more than 140 Palestinians. Five Israelis have been killed by Hamas rocket fire during the battle.

Morsi hails from the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group and Hamas' own parent organization. Brotherhood leaders, including Morsi, refuse to speak to Israeli officials. Morsi hasn't even said the name of the country publicly since he was inaugurated in late June, though he has referred to its people as "Israelis."

In ideology, the Brotherhood supports the use of force against Israel to liberate "Muslim lands." Only two months ago, the Brotherhood's supreme leader, Mohammed Badie, proclaimed that regaining Jerusalem can "only come through holy jihad." The group opposes Egypt's 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

But since coming to power, the group has had to yield to pragmatism. The Brotherhood and Morsi have promised to abide by the peace accord. Through a military operation and through dialogue, Morsi has tried to rein in Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula who have attacked Egyptian security forces and staged attacks across the border into Israel.

When the Israeli offensive began, President Barack Obama spoke to Morsi after talking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While Obama and Morsi disagreed over whom to blame for the violence, they agreed to work together to halt it.

That Israel was comfortable with an Islamist like Morsi mediating may not be a measure of trust as much as a realization that only the Egyptians can persuade their Hamas cousins to enter a deal and ensure an end to rocket attacks.

The cease-fire announced Wednesday defines Egypt as the "sponsor" of the deal to which each side would appeal over violations. That potentially puts Egypt in the uncomfortable position of ensuring militants in Gaza don't fire rockets. If the deal falls apart ? whichever side is to blame ? Egypt could face damage to its credibility or strained ties with one side or the other.

Egypt's first freely elected president, Morsi also handled the Gaza conflict in a way starkly contrasting with his predecessor, longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled nearly two years ago.

An ally of Israel and deeply opposed to Hamas, Mubarak's regime helped Israel blockade Gaza after Hamas seized the territory in 2007. When Israel and Hamas last went to war in 2008, Mubarak was accused by critics of secretly supporting Israel's ground offensive.

During that offensive, far bloodier than the past week's, Mubarak kept the sole border passenger crossing between Egypt and Gaza mostly shut, preventing some of the more seriously wounded Palestinians from receiving treatment in Egyptian hospitals. Mubarak's regime was also wary of any deals that would legitimize Hamas' rule in Gaza. Mubarak feared that a strong Hamas would embolden Islamists at home, particularly his nemesis, the Brotherhood.

Morsi has not completely thrown open the crossing as Hamas would like. But during the past week, Egypt let in wounded Palestinians and bolstered Hamas with waves of delegations entering Gaza to show their support ? from Egyptian activists to the foreign ministers of Turkey, Qatar, Algeria, Sudan and others.

Morsi also dispatched his prime minister to Gaza soon after hostilities began on a heavily symbolic visit. A photograph of a tearful Hesham Kandil kissing the lifeless body of a Palestinian child was splashed across the front page of every Cairo newspaper.

Since his presidency began, Morsi has used foreign policy to make a splash. Critics say that allows him a high international profile with little accountability and is easier than tackling the daily hardship of a population already weighed down by unemployment, price hikes and surging crime.

Morsi began with a hard hitting speech in Iran last August calling on Tehran's ally Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down. He founded a working group with Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to look for an end to Syria's civil war. It has gone nowhere and the Saudis have since pulled out, but, Morsi is none the worse for it.

Gaza is more hazardous for him if the cease-fire fails. Egyptians feel strongly about what they see as decades of suffering by the Palestinians at the hands of Israel. Their opposition to Israel runs deep after four full-blown wars with it in six decades. A resumption of Israeli attacks on Gaza, for example, could land Morsi in hot water with the Egyptian public.

Also, Morsi has to contend with growing criticism by critics that his preoccupation with Gaza pulled him away from pressing issues at home.

More than 50 children were killed last week when their school bus was hit by a train at a railway crossing in southern Egypt, an incident that led to charges of negligence against Morsi's government. Street protests against his policies and the Brotherhood left one person dead and hundreds wounded in Cairo since Monday. Charges of illegitimacy now swirl around a panel drafting a new constitution after liberals and Christians pulled out in protest against the domination of the process by Morsi's Islamist allies.

On top of that, Egypt announced Tuesday it reached an initial understanding with the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan to kick-start the ailing economy. Egypt will have to reduce subsidies from basic items like fuel, risking social unrest over price hikes.

"Morsi's popularity can't go on eroding like this forever" without a backlash, said rights activist Mohsen Kamal. "He is vulnerable to dramatic and maybe even violent changes if he ignores what is happening."

Sensing the mounting problems at home, Morsi called off plans to travel to Pakistan for a summit of eight Islamic nations, sending his vice president instead.

Morsi will stay home, an official announcement said, "to follow up on domestic issues and the observation by all parties of the cease-fire in Gaza."
