Twitter's Mobile Ads Begin to Click

Twitter Inc. is showing early signs of success selling advertising on mobile devices, an area that is bedeviling Internet companies including Facebook Inc. and Google Inc.

On most days, Twitter is now generating the majority of its revenue from ads shown to its users on mobile gadgets, rather than from ads on Twitter.com, company executives said. One key reason: People who see a Twitter ad on their phones are more likely to click or interact with it in some way, which is how Twitter gets paid for advertisements.

The San Francisco company has only been offering mobile ads in earnest since April, and some companies buying Twitter ads said they haven't kept tabs on the effectiveness of their campaigns on mobile devices.

But P.F. Chang's China Bistro Inc. is among the advertisers that say they were surprised at how many people are clicking on Twitter mobile ads.

The Scottsdale, Ariz.-based restaurant chain this winter spent $25,000 to pitch a Lunar New Year promotion to people on Twitter. P.F. Chang's arranged to push posts promoting dining rewards to Twitter users, including those searching for terms such as "Chinese New Year," on their mobile phones or their personal computers.

In the first four days of the campaign, P.F. Chang's said roughly 1 million people clicked, recirculated or otherwise interacted with the Twitter ad. Of those people, roughly 70% did so from mobile devices rather than computers.

As P.F. Chang's began seeing the results, the company quickly shifted that entire Twitter ad budget to mobile, said Jason Miller, digital content and community manager for P.F. Chang's.

"The results were staggering," Mr. Miller said. He added that P.F. Chang's in April kicked off another $25,000 Twitter ad campaign to pitch lunch offerings. Mr. Miller said it hasn't been as effective in generating clicks or in pushing up restaurant sales.

He speculated that Twitter ads may be better for time-sensitive events rather than for awareness-building efforts. "That may be where Twitter ads fall flat," Mr. Miller said.

Twitter says its mobile-advertising business is working because a company can easily convert any tweet into an ad.

The format of ads on Twitter's mobile and desktop sites are the same, and advertisers pay the same rate no matter the platform. On many mobile services including Google's, ad rates are lower in part because advertiser demand is lower.

Twitter also says its users are more active on mobile devices, which may explain why interaction with ads is higher, too. About 60% of its 140 million monthly users access the service on mobile devices.

"We know that mobile is how people access Twitter, it's where people are overall, and we know it's where the business is," said Adam Bain, Twitter's president of global revenue.

Twitter, which is closely held, declined to specify its ad revenue. But eMarketer Inc. expects Twitter to produce $259.9 million from advertising this year, up from an estimated $139.5 million in 2011. The research firm and other analysts don't break out Twitter's revenue forecasts from mobile devices.

Investor expectations are high that Twitter, which has a private-market valuation of roughly $8.4 billion, can amp up its advertising sales ahead of an initial public offering that people close to the company expect in a year or more.

Overall, the potential growth in mobile advertising is enormous, but elusive for many companies. U.S. advertising on cellphones and tablets reached $1.6 billion in 2011?only about 5% of all ad spending, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau.

Some research shows consumers are more likely to notice ads on their phones, in part because they still are novel. But smaller screen sizes than PCs, less sophisticated ad targeting and wariness by advertisers is holding down ad rates or spending on mobile devices.

Executives at Google have said they are devoting resources to close gaps in the ad rates they make from mobile devices compared with PCs. The lower cost of Google's mobile ads compared with those viewed on a desktop have contributed to an overall downturn in the average amount paid by advertisers every time someone clicks on an ad, the company has said.

Google recently made it simpler for more than one million of its advertisers to buy ads across platforms.

In October, the company said it was on pace to generate $2.5 billion annually in mobile-ad revenue, its last public figure on the topic. The company made about $36.5 billion in revenue from advertising last year.

Facebook, which made $3.15 billion last year from advertising, has only begun experimenting with mobile ads, selling what it calls "sponsored stories," in which marketers pay Facebook to republish positive messages that users post about their brand.

The mobile-ad push is crucial given that more than half of the social network's 900 million users access the site on mobile devices.

"We've seen powerful indicators that when people see sponsored stories on mobile they engage," said Carolyn Everson, Facebook vice president of global marketing solutions.

Doubts remain that Twitter's ad business?which is about two years old?will ever be as big as Facebook's or Google's.

Twitter "still has a lot of growth to accomplish before they can make advertising a big business," eMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson said.

Still, CloudOn Inc. is a Twitter believer. The Palo Alto, Calif., business-software company said its Twitter ads helped generate close to 10,000 downloads of its free document-software app for Apple Inc.'s iPad.

Jay Zaveri, CloudOn's vice president of product and marketing, said when the start-up targeted Twitter ads in the past few months to mobile devices, about 2.5 of every 100 ads resulted in an app download?about three times the download rate of ads on Twitter.com, and better than other advertising services CloudOn has used.

"It's been a very good experience," he said.

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

Nexus Q hacked to run Android games in under 24 hours

The word "run" in the headline is chosen very carefully. Developer Christina Kelly managed to get Swords and Soldiers up and running on the Nexus Q, but the game is not actually playable. Without a touchscreen or any other way to actually control the title, there's not much to do besides look at the splash screen. Still, the fact that in under 24 hours Google's new streaming appliance has already made to fire up unapproved apps bodes well for its future with the hacker community. Once the device gets in the hands of more devs we imagine it'll only a matter of time before someone figures out a way to get Hulu or Netflix running on it, with your Android phone acting as the remote.

House votes to hold attorney general in contempt

(AP) ? The House has approved a precedent-setting resolution to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in criminal contempt of Congress. It was the first time a sitting Cabinet member has been held in contempt.

A number of Democrats boycotted Thursday's vote.

Republicans pushed through the resolution because Holder did not turn over documents related to a botched gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee wants Justice Department records from a 10-month period after February 2011. That month, the department initially denied guns were allowed to be purchased in Arizona and be taken to Mexico. In early December that year, the department acknowledged the assertion was wrong.

A separate vote will be held to hold the attorney general in civil contempt.

Highways-student loan deal poised for votes

(AP) ? Republican leaders pushed a sweeping highways-student loans package salvaging millions of construction jobs and maintaining low interest rates on millions of new college loans toward a House vote Friday even as conservative groups mounted a last-minute and likely futile campaign against it.

Favorable action by the Senate on what would be the only big jobs measure Congress has enacted this year was assured. Leaders said they hoped get it done Thursday night, but then ran into procedural hurdles that pushed back a vote until Friday. Lawmakers in both parties hoped to get an early start bragging about a rare accomplishment four months before the election.

The conservative Heritage Action for America and the anti-tax Club for Growth urged a "no" vote on the bill in emails Thursday to lawmakers, warning that it will be counted as a key vote on their legislative scorecards.

"This massive bill spends too much money, will continue taxpayer bailouts for highway spending and keeps subsidies that have contributed directly to skyrocketing tuition rates," Club for Growth spokesman Barney Keller said.

Despite the backlash from such core conservative groups, the bill's supporters expressed confidence. "We got a pretty good reception in conference this morning," Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania said after House Republicans met on the bill.

After three months of haggling, House and Senate negotiators reached agreement on the package Wednesday. It includes a two-year, $100 billion spending plan for highway and mass transit construction and repairs, $6 billion to prevent rates on new student loans after from doubling after Saturday, and a five-year renewal of federal flood insurance subsidies.

The bill gives states more flexibility over how they spend federal highway aid, consolidates transportation programs and shortens environmental delays to get highway projects built faster. It also expands a loan guarantee program aimed at increasing private investment in infrastructure projects.

Democrats and Republicans each gave way on issues important to their political constituencies, but both sides also scored victories. Republicans sacrificed proposals to force a go-ahead with the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline in the Midwest and to prevent the Obama administration from regulating coal ash as a hazardous toxin. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections blamed for stalling some road projects and safety, biking and pedestrian programs.

House Republican leaders pitched the package to their members in a closed-door meeting Thursday morning that was interrupted by news of the Supreme Court's health care decision.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-La., said some conservatives have doubts about voting for the package after House negotiators dropped a House-passed provision requiring the government to approve the Canadian border-Gulf Coast Keystone pipeline. President Barack Obama has vowed to veto the bill if it included the pipeline measure.

But Cassidy said, "There's also concern among conservatives to have a decent infrastructure and some certainty for our (state transportation departments) back home and our contractors so they can build roads.... It is a mixed bag. I will just tell you that." He said he was still undecided on how he would vote.

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, chairman of the influential House Republican Study Committee, will vote against the package, his office said.

Florida Republican Rep. Steve Southerland, one of the deal's negotiators, said he expects the package to win passage, explaining that no one has argued a short-term extension is in the nation's best interest and that contractors want and deserve certainty. "I think we will have the votes," he said.

Without the bill or a short-term extension, federal aid transportation aid to states would expire, as well as the government's ability to collect federal gasoline and diesel taxes ? 18.4 cents a gallon and 24.4 cents, respectively ? that fund most of those programs. Democrats estimate that would cost an existing 1.8 million transportation-related jobs, as well as forgo another estimated 1 million jobs the bill would create.

Similarly, interest rates for on new subsidized Stafford loans for college students would double to 6.8 percent beginning Sunday. That automatic increase was approved by Congress five years ago to save money. The bill extends the current 3.4 percent rate for 12 months, saving some 7.4 million students an average $1,000 in higher interest costs over the life of the loan, typically a decade or longer.

Congressional leaders rolled the highway and student loan into a single bill because both are financed in part with pension law changes. Aides said the pension proposals might end up raising more than $18 billion in the final legislation.

The extension of the federal flood insurance program was added to the bill this week. It protects 5.6 million households and businesses and addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

New mouse model helps explain gene discovery in congenital heart disease

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Scientists now have clues to how a gene mutation discovered in families affected with congenital heart disease leads to underdevelopment of the walls that separate the heart into four chambers. A Nationwide Children's Hospital study appearing in PLoS Genetics suggests that abnormal development of heart cells during embryogenesis may be to blame.

When babies are born with a hole in their heart (either between the upper or lower chambers), they have a septal defect, the most common form of congenital heart disease. Although it's not clear what causes all septal defects, genetic studies primarily utilizing large families have led to the discovery of several causative genes.

Vidu Garg, MD, the study's lead author, previously reported that a single nucleotide change in the GATA4 gene in humans causes atrial and ventricular septal defects along with pulmonary valve stenosis. In mice, the GATA4 gene has been shown to be necessary for normal heart development and its deletion leads to abnormal heart development.

"While GATA4 has been shown to be important for several critical processes during early heart formation, the mechanism for the heart malformations found in humans with the mutation we previously reported is not well understood," said Dr. Garg, a pediatric cardiologist in The Heart Center and principal investigator in the Center for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

To better characterize the mutation, Dr. Garg and colleagues generated a mouse model harboring the same human disease-causing mutation. They saw heart abnormalities in the mice that were consistent with those seen in humans with GATA4 mutations. Upon further examination, they found that the mutant protein leads to functional deficits in the ability for heart cells to increase in number during embryonic development.

"Our findings suggest that cardiomyocyte proliferation deficits could be a mechanism for the septal defects seen in this mouse model and may contribute to septal defects in humans with mutations in GATA4," said Dr. Garg, also a faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. "This mouse model will be valuable in studying how septation and heart valve defects arise and serve as a useful tool to study the impact of environmental factors on GATA4 functions during heart development."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is ramping up a fresh phase of his re-election bid with a bus tour next week, focusing more on direct engagement with voters and less on ritzy fundraisers.

Obama's two-day road trip through Pennsylvania and Ohio, two key battleground states in the November election, kicks off July 5, a campaign official said. It will be the president's first bus tour of the 2012 campaign.

The bus trip also will coincide with the release of the monthly nationwide jobs report, a key economic indicator that could directly affect the president's re-election prospects. The most recent report, for May, showed a slight uptick in the unemployment rate, raising fears among Obama aides of an election-year economic slowdown.

While Obama has been running for re-election for months, his efforts thus far have focused largely on hauling in cash from supporters in dozens of fundraising events across the country as his campaign seeks to compete with energized Republican donors. He spent the early part of this week on a two-day, four-state fundraising blitz that brought in more than $5 million.

The president will still headline campaign fundraisers through the fall, but the official said Obama's schedule would start to include more of a mix of campaign rallies and other events focused on speaking directly to a wide swath of voters in the states Obama needs most in order to hold the White House.

Further underscoring his strategy shift was his campaign's announcement this week that Jennifer Psaki, a former senior White House aide, was joining the president's re-election team as traveling press secretary.

Ohio and Pennsylvania, with 38 electoral votes between them, are crucial to the president's re-election bid. Obama won both states in 2008, but Republican rival Mitt Romney is expected to make a strong play for each.

Just over four months from Election Day, Obama aides consider Ohio a toss-up but believe Pennsylvania is leaning in the president's favor. Romney took a bus tour of his own through Ohio and Pennsylvania earlier this month.

Obama has turned to bus tours before when he needed to reconnect with voters. Last summer, after a bruising fight with congressional Republicans that brought the government to the brink of fiscal default, the president hit the road for a Midwestern bus tour aimed at refocusing his presidency on the economic issues affecting the middle class. He followed it up with a fall trip through Virginia and North Carolina.

Rolling through swing states on a campaign bus allows Obama to engage in more of the informal, retail-style politics that can be hard to achieve in the highly scripted White House. Between his scheduled events, the president is sure to make surprise visits to restaurants and small businesses or stop to greet voters gathered on the side of the road to watch his motorcade.

Obama's itinerary for the bus trip was still being finalized, but the official said the president probably would hold events in northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. The official insisted on anonymity in order to discuss details of the trip before an official announcement from the campaign.

Robotics and Computers: Curing Paralysis ? Urban Times

With the help of a robotic arm, a paralyzed woman took a sip of coffee unaided for the first time in 15 years.

The British Broadcasting Corporation reports?that two paralyzed patients in the United States have successfully managed to control a robotic arm using only their thoughts. This remarkable scientific achievement is the result of a collaboration between Brown University, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Department of Veteran Affairs.

58-year-old Cathy Hutchinson is shown in a video controlling a robotic arm and taking a drink from a flask of coffee. For years, Hutchinson had been paralyzed from the neck down, relying on the aid of others to perform simple, daily chores.

What is the secret behind this latest miracle? A tiny sensor chip implanted in the brain. The sensor is linked to a computer, allowing the brain to send signals to control the robotic arm. Theoretically, the arm would allow patients to perform basic daily chores that would otherwise require the assistance of a healthy, mobile assistant.

Credit: Un ragazzo chiamato Bi via Flickr

The new ability to control a robot with the mind is certainly wonderful news for patients suffering from paralysis. Unfortunately, while many new devices are constantly being invented to help people with disabilities function independently, there are still many patients who are solely reliant on others for assistance. The burden of relying on a caregiver, not to mention the strain caregivers must endure, make it difficult for the families of patients to live ordinary lives. ?In many cases where patients are entirely dependent on others, the mind is still completely functional. Mind-controlled robotic technology could drastically improve the quality of life for these patients and their caregivers.

While new technology such as mind-controlled robots are certainly a step in the right direction, these robots cannot yet grant complete independence to those who are paralyzed. Professor Leigh Hochberg, speaking to the BBC about the long-term goals of the robot project, said the team aims to reconnect the brains of paralyzed patients to their limbs. Effectively, the team aims to remove the robotic middle-man and completely ?fix? paralysis. The same technology would also allow amputees to control prosthetic limbs using the neural interface, restoring mobility.

Credit: Frankenstoen via Flickr

Replacing lost limbs with robotic prosthetics certainly sounds a lot like something from a science fiction novel. Professor Hochberg admits that the team?s long term goals are ?distant ambitions?, but they remain optimistic. It?s difficult to say when the new technology will be ready for widespread use, however.

While scientists continue their research, it may be time for society to consider the implications of these new discoveries. How could we adapt to robotic limbs? What sort of patients would be best suited to using the technology? Perhaps more pressingly, how could we reduce the costs of producing the technology so that it can become widespread medical equipment? If we have finally found a way to return freedom to paralyzed patients, then we must work diligently to ensure that we remove all the other barriers to the technology in the future.

Advances in company?s software enables tuning of vehicle steering feel to suit local driver expectations

PARIS???Specialist electric power steering supplier Nexteer Automotive is enabling global vehicle manufacturers to create custom steering calibrations to suit different local market requirements. The company?s ride and handling experts and in-house software engineers have provided the first customers with electric power steering (EPS) systems tuned to provide certain markets with different levels of feel, feedback and refinement.

?The perceived quality of a vehicle?s steering by drivers in key markets is a critical part of any global vehicle platform?s commercial success,? said Laurent Bresson, Nexteer?s President and COO. ?Drivers in some markets, such as the UK, expect higher levels of road-feedback than drivers in other markets. Nexteer?s high precision mechanical design and the strength of our in-house software expertise is making it viable for manufacturers to commission custom steering set-ups for some markets.?

A vehicle?s steering feel is influenced by a range of parameters, including suspension geometry, tire and bushing stiffness, spring rates, mass distribution, but the quality of the EPS system is critical. The basis for good steering feel is a mechanical system with low levels of inertia and friction, combined with a high-resolution steering sensor and a smooth assist motor. With intelligent control algorithms and ride and handling engineers adept in tuning the software, it is then possible to create custom set-ups that meet both global brand characteristics and local market requirements.

?Designing the complete system and developing the software entirely in-house gives Nexteer precise control of all the variables, allowing us to calibrate the steering more quickly,? Bertram Moeller, EPS Technology Manager., Nexteer Automotive. ?Using our own specialist software, a custom set-up for a specific local market can be very fast. Much of the driver?s perception of the vehicle?s behaviour and the road?s surface is communicated through the steering system, so the effect on the finished vehicle can be significant, helping to ensure a successful model launch and higher levels of customer satisfaction.?

Nexteer?s developed the algorithms in its control software in-house to provide the necessary range of control and operational robustness for all its EPS systems, regardless of whether the application is a large off-road SUV or small city car. While the algorithms define the system?s functionality, the calibration determines the actual timings and levels of the key system outputs, such as damping levels and the filtration of unwanted vibration.

?Our development process begins by creating the necessary mechanical properties in the system to ensure that no unwanted vibrations can interfere with the system?s response,? said Moeller. ?The mechanical tuning is defined early in the programme, when interfaces, bearings and the mechanical links that determine the system?s friction levels are all specified. The subjective tuning of the vehicle?s steering feel then takes place behind the wheel with a laptop.?

A pioneer in steering technologies, Nexteer was the first company to introduce EPS for volume applications in 1999.

(AP) ? Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Tuesday the automaker needs to conserve cash despite its quick recovery from a year of disasters as the global economic outlook is highly uncertain.

Ghosn told the company's annual shareholders meeting that Nissan Motor Co. had bounced back from the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan and the flooding in Thailand that battered Japanese automakers last year. Nissan, like other Japanese automakers, is also looking to growth in emerging markets such as Indonesia, India and Russia.

Nissan's January-March profit more than doubled to 75.3 billion yen ($941 million). Its global sales reached a record 4.85 million vehicles for the business year ended March in a remarkable recovery from production disruptions stemming from the disasters. Nissan is expecting a 400 billion yen ($5 billion) profit for the business year through March 2013.

But a shareholder who identified herself only by her surname Takahashi demanded to know why she was getting a dividend of only 20 yen (31 cents) a share if Nissan was doing so well.

Ghosn said Nissan has less cash than Japanese rivals Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. and must be more prudent in the current economic situation. The U.S. economic recovery has stalled and Europe's economy is stymied by high debt and austerity measures.

"We are facing extreme volatility," he told nearly 1,200 shareholders packing a convention center in the port city of Yokohama, where Nissan is headquartered.

Ghosn also grumbled about the strong yen, which erodes the value of overseas sales for Japanese exporters like Nissan. He said he was worried Nissan might have to reduce Japan production if the government didn't do something to bring the yen's strength under control.

Nissan, which makes the Altima sedan, Infiniti luxury model and Leaf electric car, is allied with Renault SA of France.

Nissan is reviving the Datsun nameplate brand that helped it grow in the U.S. when it was still a newcomer during the 1960s, but this time for emerging markets.

Nissan is also counting on growth in China, although not at the stupendous pace of a few years ago.

"We continue to be bullish on China," Ghosn said.

Fitness fitness conscious folks how to do enterprise ? Yoga Netipot ? gifts& well being care goods

Report by hi joiney

Statistics show that China?s health equipment market is about 40 billion?? five billion yuan. At present, China has practically 500 fitness equipment makers in the globe nearly all the common sorts of fitness equipment, Chinese companies are in production, and processing a large number of foreign manufacturers, Chinese-produced fitness equipment in the international market place accounts for about 60 % share of the export trade amounted to two billion U.S. dollars.

Even so, China?s 1.three billion population, have fitness equipment in the house is much like a treadmill for 1 year about twenty million units sold, home penetration price of only one%. With the ?fitness? movement launched in depth, people?s well being awareness year by year, tv, the network adverts on fitness gear growing, then the fitness equipment industry in the end the present predicament? What type of fitness gear company a lot more rewarding it?

Lack of professional advice gear generally idle
A lot of customers are prepared to invest big bucks on the food table, but do not want to vote thousands of dollars on the buy of fitness gear, it is shoppers do not form a loved ones fitness concept of consumption. Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang Province sports activities stationery market be much more concentrated within the sporting items sales market place, but at times the client market place in the true workers also much less than the marketplace. Market on the very first floor since the sideline stationery, played a lot more than a small active on the second floor, second floor, only a handful of huge fitness equipment for sale, the remaining facade of vacant or partially sublet for the collection.

Organization users, mentioned right after the SARS crisis, a period of time is the most prosperous of fitness equipment sales, when folks abruptly realized the significance of loved ones fitness, acceptable workout can improve cardiovascular function and immunity, but this busy period fairly short. Reflected from a side, men and women weak buyer awareness of fitness gear, fitness gear eventually led to a extremely very low penetration.

, Of course, awareness of the importance of the fitness is equally important. Fitness gear to buy to enter the property only the first step is equal to consumption. Lack of effective specialist advice, with the outcome following the consumer had allow the fresh strength gear lying about, do not persevere.

In addition, the company?s advertising in the fitness gear investment is fairly modest. Fitness equipment goods to broaden the media ?exposure?, in the situation of weak buyer awareness, boost market place share is a huge increase.

A lot of makers, but the lack of neighborhood brand names
Have information on the worldwide market place much more than 60% of fitness gear are affixed with ?Produced in China?, but very couple of Chinese very own brands. The cause is that goods in the worldwide marketplace competitiveness is not higher, only for foreign businesses to do a great deal of processed products. On the one particular hand the domestic production of global common sports activities equipment, on the other hand, domestic buyers have two or three instances as significantly bogus sales of foreign brand names. This kind of embarrassment is a sign that, in the effectively-identified internationally of the nationwide brands missing.

From the manufacturing viewpoint, tiny-scale energy is not strong corporate few, and even many companies have not passed the good quality technique certification, and so on., these all reflect the brand-title sports activities manufacturing in the gaps and deficiencies in the road. Organized by the China Sporting Goods Association to carry out the fitness gear industry in China renowned brand evaluation final results show that O Reiter, a excellent family, Shu Hua, evergreen, English Pais five brand names in the influential shoppers.

Treadmill finest selling inside four,000 yuan
Property fitness gear industry and the commercial industry, the market place is divided into two blocks, domestic industry dimension business market than the massive, quickly growth, as soon as a fitness sector who strive to enlarge the cake. Items sold by home users typically little dimension, light weight, attributes easy mixture of instruments. The commercial market place sales target for the fitness centers, community sports activities centers or schools, commercial buildings and other institutions, buy is entirely functional high-grade merchandise.

Top home fitness equipment from sales of view, electric treadmill is nevertheless the most popular, the marketplace share of the complete sales of fitness gear Practically sixty percent of the market, single-keep retail sales up to 30 units a month or so. Product sales followed by multi-functional fitness equipment and workout bike, weight of close to 15% and 10%. On the contrary, rowing exercising machines, cross-nation ski machine due to use of area constraints, the reasonably large charges, product sales decline sharply.

Boosting blood system protein complex protects against radiation toxicity

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? New research in Nature Medicine shows that boosting a protein pathway in the body's blood making system protects mice from otherwise fatal radiation poisoning.

Scientists in the multi-institutional study -- posted online by the journal on June 24 -- say their findings open the potential for new treatments against radiation toxicity during cancer treatment or environmental exposures -- such as in a nuclear explosion or accident.

By identifying a target-specific intervention to protect the hematopoietic system against radiation toxicity, the study addresses a largely unmet challenge, according to the researchers.

"These findings suggest that pharmacologic augmentation of the activity of the Thbd-aPC pathway by recombinant Thbd (thrombomodulin) or aPC (activated protein C) might offer a rational approach to the mitigation of tissue injury and lethality caused by ionizing radiation," the scientists write in their manuscript. "Recombinant human aPC has undergone extensive clinical testing in patients, and recombinant soluble human Thbd is currently being investigated for efficacy in antithrombotic therapy in humans. Our data encourage the further evaluation of these proteins for their radio-mitigating activities."

The study reveals a previously unknown function of the Thbd-aPC pathway in radiation mitigation. The pathway is normally known for its ability to prevent the formation of blood clots and help the body fight infections. The researchers found the pathway helps blood cells in the bone marrow recover from injury caused by radiation exposure. They demonstrated that pharmacologic boosting of this pathway with two drugs tested for the treatment of thrombosis or infection (recombinant Thbd and aPC respectively) can be used in mice to prevent death caused by exposure to lethal doses of radiation.

In all instances of treatment with recombinant soluble Thbd or aPC, the result was accelerated recovery of hematopoietic progenitor cell activity in bone marrow and a reduction in the harmful effects of lethal total body irradiation. When treatment was with aPC, these benefits occurred even when treatment was delayed for 24 hours.

The scientists caution their study involves early laboratory research in mice, so it remains to be tested how the findings may translate to human treatment. Researchers also need to determine exactly why the protective function of the targeted Thbd-aPC protein pathway seems to work so well in mice.

Researchers noted that the protective benefits of Thbd-aPC occurred only in vivo in irradiated mouse models. The researchers reported that overexpressed Thbd in irradiated laboratory cell cultures did not offer the same protective benefits, as the cells did not survive. This indicates the protective benefits of Thbd on blood making cells in irradiated mouse models depends on the help of additional cells or molecules in the body, which the researchers are trying to identify in a follow-up study.

The study involves extensive multi-scientist collaborations that combined previously independent lines of research by groups at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Ulm, Germany (led by Hartmut Geiger, PhD, Division of Experimental Hematology/Cancer Biology and the Department of Dermatology/Allergic Diseases); the University of Arkansas, Little Rock (led by Martin Hauer-Jensen, MD, PhD, Division of Radiation Health, the College of Pharmacy and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System); the Blood Research Institute in Milwaukee, Wis. (led by Hartmut Weiler, PhD); and The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. (led by John H. Griffin, PhD, Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine).

The research team said the current study exemplifies a global shift to multi-investigator projects that allow a combination of varied expertise by scientists tackling complex problems from the perspective of their respective fields. This approach requires the willingness of investigators to share unpublished data and engage in an open collaboration. The researchers also said the study underscores the importance of continued federal funding for leading edge basic research that can benefit human health.
