Riviera Beach church provides haven for victims of human trafficking

They've read about it in school. They've seen documentaries about it. They've witnessed it on neighborhood streets.

Riviera Beach residents say human trafficking ? the modern-day enslaving of human beings for labor or sexual purposes ? is a problem in Florida, and that Project Unite could help to put an end to it.

"We see this all the time," Vontavious Robinson, 22, said. "I've seen prostitutes. I don't know if they're being forced to do that."

Project Unite, a group formed to combat human trafficking, had its first forum recently at St. George's Episcopal Church.

Its leaders said it was created to raise awareness of the issue. The church on West 22nd Street will provide a safe haven for local victims of trafficking where they can come for food and counseling.

"South Florida is a hotbed of human trafficking," said Jeff Goldberg, assistant logistics manager of Palm Beach County's Emergency Management Department.

Every 30 minutes a person is trafficked into the United States, he said. And 73 percent of victims are younger than 25.

Florida is third in the country, behind California and New York, in terms of the number of cases, he said. Victims are either trafficked locally or are brought in from places such as China, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil and Costa Rica.

Victims are often promised a better life in Florida but really it's just "a better lie," said Brandy Macaluso, coordinator of victim's services for the Coalition of Independent Living Options.

Sometimes women are told they can work as housekeepers and then when they arrive in the country they are thrown on the streets to sell themselves, she said.

Sheila Acevedo, Project Unite's chairwoman, said with the church's aid, she helped three women and two children who were human trafficking victims to safety. One was a 15-year-old who was often arrested on prostitution charges while she was living with a man in a trailer park.

Project Unite is led by the Chi Zeta Zeta chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority, the Palm Beach County Coalition on Human Trafficking, and the Soroptimist International of Palm Beach.

Members of Project Unite hope victims will come forward more often now and that word will spread on the street about the group ? eventually minimizing the number of human trafficking victims. And some residents believe it could.

"It will help," Robinson said. "If they keep pushing it."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Clemson and Kansas State tumbled in The Associated Press college football poll after losing for the first time this season, and the top five teams in the rankings held their ground heading into the showdown between No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama.

LSU received 47 first-place votes from the media panel, Alabama had 10 and No. 5 Boise State had one.

No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 4 Stanford held on to their spots after victories, while the Broncos were idle.

Georgia Tech's upset pushed the Yellow Jackets back into the rankings at No. 22 and Auburn jumped back in at No. 25.

The losses by Clemson and Kansas State leave six undefeated teams in major college football ? the top five and No. 14 Houston.

The rest of the top had Oregon at No. 6, Oklahoma moving up four spots to No. 7, Arkansas at No. 8 and Nebraska and South Carolina right behind.

Clemson at 11th was followed by Atlantic Coast Conference rival Virginia Tech.

Michigan is No. 13, its best ranking since Nov. 4, 2007.

Merck 3Q profit soars, beats analysts' views

Drugmaker Merck & Co. said Friday that its third-quarter profit soared from results a year ago that were weighed down by huge acquisition and legal charges.

The latest results beat Wall Street estimates, and Merck shares rose 84 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $35.15 in morning trading.

"Three consecutive quarters of top and bottom line growth demonstrate out ability to consistently perform while at the same time making the strategic investments necessary for the future," CEO Kenneth Frazier said in a statement.

The maker of diabetes drug Januvia and Singulair for asthma and allergies said net income climbed to $1.69 billion, or 55 cents per share, the July-September period. That's up from $342 million, or 11 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding acquisition and restructuring charges in the latest quarter, adjusted income 94 cents per share. The charges were mostly related to its November 2009 purchase of fellow drugmaker Schering-Plough Corp. for $49 billion.

The adjusted earnings were 3 cents per share higher than the 91 cents per share expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet. The analysts typically exclude one-time items from their estimates.

Revenue rose 8 percent to $12.02 billion from $11.12 billion. The analysts expected revenue of $11.62 billion. Merck said revenue was boosted about 5 percent by favorable currency exchange rates.

The company raised the lower end of its 2011 forecast, to a new range of $3.72 to $3.76 per share, or $2.03 to $2.20 per share excluding one-time items. Analysts expect $3.73 per share for the year.

Prescription drug sales totaled $10.35 billion, led by strong sales of Singulair, Januvia and combination diabetes drug Janumet, the HIV drug Isentress and the Gardasil and Zostavax vaccines.

Singulair, Merck's top drug, saw sales rise 10 percent to $1.34 billion. Its U.S. patent expires next August, when generic competition will quickly reduce sales ? the key reason for Merck's latest round of job cuts.

Januvia and Janumet sales both jumped more than 40 percent, to $846 million and $350 million, respectively. They have quickly risen to be among the most popular and fastest-growing diabetes pills.

Sales of biologic immune disorder drug Remicade fell 15 percent to $561 million, because of revised terms of Merck's revenue-sharing deal on the drug with Johnson & Johnson. The new terms took effect in the third quarter, following settlement of a dispute in arbitration.

Sales of animal health products jumped 20 percent to $826 million. Consumer health sales edged up 3 percent to $421 million.

Courtney Love's Daughter Frances Bean Engaged?

Courtney Love's Daughter Frances Bean Engaged?

Frances Bean Cobain, the only daughter of the late Kurt Cobain and his widow Courtney Love, is reportedly headed down the aisle.

The princess of grunge royalty is only 19, but she may be planning to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Isaiah Silva, The OC Weekly reports. Cobain has been dating the musician (he's the frontman of California folk-rock band, The Rambles) for more than a year, and according to sources around the OC, as well as Facebook, the two are engaged.

A few weeks ago, the two reportedly changed their relationship status on Facebook to "engaged," but they've since removed the relationship marker. The couple (who use fake names on the ubiquitous social media site) continue to make references to their engagement in their Facebook posts, like Cobain writing "Getting to spend the rest of my life loving my best friend makes me the luckiest woman in the world" and Silva referring to her as his "fiance."

Maybe like her parents, Cobain would like to start a family early. She recently purchased a $1.825 million home near Los Angeles' Runyon Canyon with her inheritance and clearly seems to be in love.

But before the well wishes start pouring in, The OC Weekly blog brings up one eerie fact (with photographs to prove their claim): Cobain's rocker beau looks remarkably like the Nirvana lead singer. Is that creepy -- or strangely fitting for a young woman who was only 20 months old when her father committed suicide?

Chicago Grocery Store Expansions to Eliminate Food Deserts, Create 2,000 Jobs (ContributorNetwork)

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and first lady Michelle Obama announced several major grocery store chains will be opening 36 grocery stores in neighborhoods around Chicago. The stores will help eliminate "food deserts" in the city and will also help create more than 2,000 new jobs for Chicagoans.

Supervalu, Roundy's Supermarkets, Wal-Mart and Aldi's have agreed to open 17 new locations. Additionally, Walgreens has also decided to expand 19 of its locations to offer fresh food. With this announcement, here are facts about food deserts and the steps Chicago and Mayor Emanuel have taken to reduce this problem:

* According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food deserts are areas that lack access to affordable foods that make up a healthy diet like vegetables, fruits, milk and whole grains.

* More than 23 million people live in food deserts, notes the Department of Agriculture. These areas often include urban neighborhoods and rural towns.

* Residing in a food desert can lead to health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease due to the lack of affordable and healthy food options.

* The Chicago Sun-Times reported Chicago's food desert has decreased by 40 percent over the past five years, from about 632,974 people to 384,954 people.

* Of the nearly 384,000 people, about 124,000 are children and Chicago's food desert lies in predominantly African-American communities.

* Yahoo! News reported that in mid-June, Mayor Emanuel met with several CEOs from some of the nation's biggest grocery chains to discuss eliminating food deserts in the city.

* Food deserts in the city cover the neighborhoods of North Lawndale, Chatham, Douglas, Englewood, Roseland and West Pullman.

* Tackling the problem of food deserts has long been a major goal of Mayor Emanuel, who, during his election campaign, spoke about his plans to eliminate the issue, according to CBS Local.

* The mayor's initial plan involved engaging small and local grocery stories, encouraging communities to plant gardens, and developing public-private partnerships.

* Emanuel's and Obama's recent announcement includes piloting five new farmers markets on the city's west side over the next two years.

* Obama is also encouraging other mayors to follow Chicago's lead to end food deserts in their city's by bringing healthy and affordable food options to underserved residents, reported Bloomberg Businessweek.

Rachel Bogart provides an in-depth look at current environmental issues and local Chicago news stories. As a college student from the Chicago suburbs pursuing two science degrees, she applies her knowledge and passion to both topics to garner further public awareness.
