The Orioles will host the New York Yankees for a four-game series beginning Sept. 6 at Camden Yards.
The Grand Prix of Baltimore is over. But Baltimore?s biggest sports weekend, perhaps its biggest in years, is taking place this weekend.
The Baltimore Orioles open up a four-game series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards against the New York Yankees Sept. 6, as the teams compete for first place in the American League East. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens will kick off their season Sept. 10 at M&T Bank Stadium against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Further, there is a certain 22-time Olympic medal winner from Canton who is slated to be honored by the city Monday as well.
?There is certain synergy that comes when all teams are doing well,? said Kevin Byrne, a spokesman for the Ravens. ?It makes the general public a little more susceptible for having fun with sports.?
The festivities kick off early on Thursday when the Orioles unveil a statue of Cal Ripken Jr. at Camden Yards. Ripken is expected be in attendance, as are Orioles Hall of Famers Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, Eddie Murray and Brooks Robinson.
Thursday and Saturday?s games against the Yankees are already close to sell-out crowds of 45,971 people, said Greg Bader, a spokesman for the Orioles. The team also expects crowds in the mid-30,000?s for Friday and Sunday?s game against the Yankees.
?We?re hoping the excitement of the first place series is going to drive the weekend,? Bader said.
The Orioles are also working with the Ravens to promote the beginning of their season. The baseball team is hoping Ravens wide receiver Anquan Boldin, as well as others, will possibly attend Saturday?s game, Bader said.
The Ravens, meanwhile, have already sold out the 71,000-seat M&T Bank Stadium for Monday night?s home opener against Cincinnati, Byrne said. The game will be televised on ESPN and will start at 7 p.m.
