Hamas 'agrees to new ceasefire' with Israel

A leader of the Palestinian group Hamas says the group has agreed to try a new ceasefire with Israel, after six days of bloodshed in and around the Gaza Strip.

"Our Egyptian brothers have asked us to completely stop firing at Israel: we told the Egyptians that we agree to exchange quiet for quiet with Israel," Ayman Taha, the leader, said.

An official close to Hamas said on?Saturday?that the truce would take effect from midnight (21:00 GMT).

Earlier, Palestinian officials?said the latest attacks brought the number of people killed so far in Israeli?attacks on Saturday to three, and to 15 since this round of violence erupted on Monday.

Palestinian medics said the dead?included a little child and that?at least 24 others?had been?wounded.

One attack by an Israeli drone killed a Palestinian man, Khaled al-Burai, 25, east of Jabaliya, in the north of Gaza, a medical source said.

Two other Palestinians survived the attack, witnesses said.

Later, in the afternoon, Israeli air?raids killed 42-year-old Ussama Ali, and wounded 10 passers-by, according to Abham Abu Selmiya, spokesperson for the emergency services.

Palestinian medics said he was riding a motorcycle in Gaza City's al-Nasser neighbourhood when he was hit.

Earlier in the day?Hamas had threatened to end a three-day-old Egyptian-brokered truce following a series of deadly Israeli air raids.

A?statement on Saturday from the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades said, "the air raids by the Zionist enemy are new crimes. We will not stay silent in the face of the crimes".

Israeli denial

A medic said Ali al-Shawaf, aged six, was killed, and his father and another man wounded east of the city of Khan Younis, but the Israeli military denied it was responsible.

"According to the findings of a preliminary investigation, what happened in Khan Younis had nothing to do with any operation by the Israeli military," an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

Witnesses said Israeli aircraft carried out at least four other?raids elsewhere in Gaza on Saturday.

One targeted people believed by Israel to be fighters who were travelling in a car in the Zeitoun neighbourhood east of Gaza City after they had fired rockets into Israel, witnesses said.

Two civilian bystanders suffered minor injuries, they said.

Raids also struck the Beit Lahiya area in the north and the Nusseirat and?Al-Bureij refugee camps in the centre of the Gaza Strip, without causing any?casualties, witnesses said on Saturday.

Overnight raids targeted two camps of the?Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades in the centre and north?of Gaza, and a former Hamas security post in Gaza City. They wounded?about 20 people, the health ministry said.

Palestinian fighters struck back, firing at least 23 rockets into southern?Israel, most of them hitting the town of Sderot close to the Gaza border,?Israeli officials said, adding that one man was wounded.

The Israeli army said the latest raids were in response to rocket fire earlier in the week.

Israel held Hamas responsible for "all terrorist activity coming from the Gaza Strip", the army statement said.

The latest round of Israeli attacks and Palestinian retaliation began with air raids on Monday morning, just hours after?armed men?from Sinai carried out an ambush along Israel's southern border with Egypt, killing an Israeli civilian.

Israel has said its sudden?surge in Gaza operations was "in no way related" to the border incident, with the military saying the air force was targeting fighters?about to attack it.

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga aims for more in women's sports

  • UTC Lady Mocs pitcher Michelle Fuzzard throws against Tennessee Tech at Frost Stadium on April 10.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga athletic department is striving to meet the "proportionality" prong for Title IX compliance. Of the three prongs, one of which has to be met to be in compliance with the now 40-year-old federal law, that's the ultimate goal.

UTC is a long way from hitting that prong, which essentially requires that the number of male and female student-athletes be proportional to the number of male and female students. However, the school is meeting prong three, which requires institutions to demonstrate that they are accommodating students' interests and abilities.

The second prong has to do with the continued addition of women's programs. UTC hasn't started a women's sport since adding golf in 2006. The resources aren't available to add more, just as resources aren't available to flood UTC's nine current women's varsity sports with money.

"We're meeting the only prong that at this time we're eligible to meet or have an opportunity to meet," athletic director Rick Hart said. "Overall, similar to the [Academic Progress Rate], I'm pleased that we have a plan, that we're following that plan and that we've been able to implement all of the aspects of that plan, in the time period that we said we would."

A new five-year plan was launched last year, following an independent review of UTC's compliance status in May 2010. The review found that the student body is roughly 56 percent female, but males make up about 60 percent of the school's total number of student-athletes.

According to the report, there is a 15.9 percent disparity "between the participation rate and the enrollment of women students." That number is down from 25 percent in 2002.

Senior associate athletic director and senior woman administrator Laura Herron said UTC is implementing several measures in the five-year plan, which has 17 action items, to help close the equity gap. It is adding a full-time volleyball assistant in the fall, instead of having a graduate assistant on staff, and it is capping the number of participants in men's sports while adding some roster spots on women's teams.

The roster-number changes won't affect scholarships, Herron said, only participation numbers. And they will help close the proportionality gap, but not all the way.

"With having football, we'd probably have to add three or four sports to get participants up [to meet prong one]," Herron said.

One of the steps to meeting prong three is conducting surveys to gauge the student body's interest in the sports UTC has and what sports students would be interested in UTC adding. A new survey will be done each year of the five-year plan, Herron said.

The survey conducted during the 2011-12 school year -- all undergraduates received multiple emails from chancellor Roger Brown encouraging them to participate -- yielded a small number of responses.

"We had 583 total responses, out of 10,000 students," Herron said, adding that it will take several years' worth of surveys to get an accurate picture of what students want.

One thing that won't be happening any time soon is the addition of a men's sport. The question Hart gets perhaps more than any other is, when is UTC bringing back baseball? Don't hold your breath.

"Because of Title IX, we cannot start a men's sport," Herron said, because UTC's participation numbers are already out of whack.

Herron grew up near Rising Fawn, Ga., and said she wasn't really aware of Title IX at the time.

"I played softball until fifth grade, but the coach got pregnant and nobody else would coach the team," she said. "I really didn't know about Title IX and equity."

She noticed a disparity between men's and women's resources after high school, while attending college or working as an athletic trainer.

"It was in the late [19]80s and the [women's] basketball team was eating sack lunches in a van while the men's basketball team was eating a lot better," she said. "The students coming in now, they've never seen that. They want to know how many pairs of shoes they're getting, and they expect that treatment.

"I think it's good that they haven't had to struggle, but I always feel like, do you appreciate it? Unless you've eaten that peanut butter sandwich on the bus or slept four girls to a room -- I've been on road trips like that."

Hart said UTC is working to reach prong one, but it isn't something that can change quickly.

"I think it's one of those things that we'll have to chip away at as we try to get closer to one of the other prongs, proportionality being, obviously, the ideal situation," he said. "We've made a lot of strides and we've got a long way to go, not just as it relates to investing in women's athletics, but in all of our athletics programs."

Utah, Colo. fires keep thousands from homes

Firefighters struggled on Saturday to contain wind-stoked wildfires that forced the evacuation of more than 2,000 people in Utah and 1,000 more in Colorado, where more than a dozen homes burned.

Fanned by winds, the so-called Dump Fire about 35 miles south of Salt Lake City, Utah grew to 5,600 acres on Saturday from 4,000 late Friday, and was only about 30 percent contained, Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Cami Lee said.

In neighboring Colorado, firefighters grappled with the High Park Fire, an 81,190-acre blaze burning in steep mountain canyons west of Fort Collins. The 45-percent contained blaze has burned 191 homes, NBC station KUSA of Denver reported. The total cost to fight the fire is estimated at $25 million, it said.

Late Friday afternoon, wind-stoked flames jumped containment lines and roared through a subdivision, destroying an estimated nine homes, Larimer County Sheriff's Office spokesman John Schulz said.

The 20-acre Woodland Heights Fire, across the street from Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, destroyed 21 homes, KUSA reported.

Anything within a 1-mile circumference of the fire is being evacuated, Reid Armstrong of the U.S. Forest Service told KUSA.

The fire is burning entirely in the Estes Park town limits, near the Beaver Meadows Entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Another Colorado wildfire sprung up around noon in El Paso County, NBC station KOAA of Colorado Springs reported. The Waldo Canyon Fire increased to 1,000 acres by Saturday evening.

The Utah fire is burning primarily south and west of Saratoga Springs, where wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour were expected to confound firefighting efforts, Lee said.

Officials say target shooters triggered the blaze near a city landfill on Thursday. It is the 20th fire in Utah started by target shooting this year, they said.

On Saturday, officials revised down substantially the number of people evacuated in Saratoga Springs and nearby Eagle Mountain. Some 588 homes were evacuated in the two towns on Friday affecting up to 2,500 residents, according to Jason Curry of Utah's office of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.

On Friday, officials had said up to 9,000 people were evacuated. The substantial change followed a more accurate count, Curry said.

Utah officials will decide later in the day if any residents will be allowed to return home, Lee said.

"We're waiting to see what the winds do," she said. "We have a lot of unburned areas between the fire area and the homes and with the high winds, things can always change quickly."

Some 450 firefighters were on the ground Saturday in Utah, with support from two air tankers and several helicopters, Lee said. One firefighter had suffered minor burns, but no other injuries had been reported.

The Colorado fire is blamed for the death of a 62-year-old grandmother who perished in her mountain cabin. The High Park Fire is already the state's most destructive and the second-largest on record in Colorado.

Incident commander Bill Hahnenberg said crews deployed in the narrow Colorado canyons had to retreat on Friday when the fire blew up and they could no longer protect homes.

"We had a very difficult time," Hahnenberg said.

The fire is burning on private land and on sections of the Roosevelt National Forest.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start this summer in parts of the Northern Rockies, the acreage burned nationwide is about on par with the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

The biggest by far is the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire in New Mexico, that state's largest on record, which has charred almost 300,000 acres. That blaze is nearly 90 percent contained.

Today's Alan Turing Google Doodle Is One of Their Greatest Yet (PHOTOS)

Alan Turing Google DoodleOn what would have been his 100th birthday, today we celebrate all that was Alan Turing -- the British mathematician, codebreaker, and artificial-intelligence pioneer. I may not personally know too much about Turing, but I do know that without the influential technological genius -- the computer as we know it could be much, much different.

In classic form, Google has officially dedicated their search page to Turing today featuring an interactive coded animation with six different numerical puzzles. Holy hardstuff! If you like online gaming and find Sudoku to be a blast, this little gem from Google is on a whole other level. And of course, I wouldn't expect anything less in honor of such a complex man.

Dare I say it, this may be one of Google's most intriguing, best doodles ever. In honor of the awesomeness that is Alan Turing and his doodle, let's take a look at some of 5 of the best interactive Google doodles from years passed:

1. May 21, 2010: 39th Anniversary of PAC-MAN:
