Foundation commemorates President Ford's 100th birthday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation is hosting three events this weekend to commemorate President Gerald R. Ford's July 14 centennial birthday.

The events will include a Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony at President Ford's tomb on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Pulitzer Prize historian Jon Meacham presented, "The Centennial Legacy of Gerald R. Ford," during the 2013 William E. Simon Lecture on Public Affairs on Saturday.

In 1988, Ford announced the establishment of the William E. Simon Lecture on Public Affairs. The series is endowed by Secretary Simon's gift to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation.

The foundation says Simon served as Ford's Secretary of the Treasury. He established this lecture series stating, "These lectures can make a significant, continuing contribution to public debate on how to preserve and strengthen the institutions of our free society."

In acknowledging Simon's gift, Ford said, "Bill Simon's generosity makes possible a top quality program, featuring outstanding national figures. Their insight on domestic and international issues will foster better public understanding of today's critical policy problems."

On Sunday, the foundation says members of the Ford family, Captain John Meier and crew members of the USS Gerald R. Ford, shipbuilders from Newport News shipyard, and Jon Meacham are scheduled to take part in the 1 p.m. Presidential Wreath Laying Ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at the Tomb of President Gerald R. Ford at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum, located on 303 Pearl Street N.W. in Grand Rapids.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of President Ford's birth, the foundation says tribute wreaths will be placed on behalf of President Barack Obama, Captain Meier and crew members, the Newport News CVN-78 Shipbuilders and the Ford family.

The Wreath Laying Ceremony is conducted on behalf of the late Betty Ford by the Ford family as an annual event on July 14, in conjunction with the long-standing White House tradition, in which the President of the United States sends a wreath to the tomb of each deceased president on that president's birthday.

A ceremony to unveil the USS Gerald R. Ford Model will take place at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Presidential Museum.

According to the foundation, remarks will be given by Captain Meier, First Commanding Officer of the USS Gerald R. Ford; Rear Admiral Thomas J. Moore; Matt Mulherin, President of Newport News Shipbuilding; and Susan Ford Bales.

The foundation says the public is invited by the Ford family to attend both ceremonies.
