As much of the South continues to suffer the fallout from one of the worst outbreaks of flooding in U.S. history, many homeowners may be wondering if their home insurance policy has flood coverage. According to a local TV station in Illinois, many people in the state may be lacking it.
In an interview with WSIL-TV, Navreet Kang, a certified flood insurance agent for the Federal Emergency Management Agency said this may be because people often operate under the mistaken belief that they can?t get flood insurance.
?Everybody can get flood insurance with the exception of those communities that do not participate in the flood program,? Kang told the local news station.
The program Kang refers to is FEMA?s National Flood Insurance Program, which is a government-funded program that provides financial assistance to homeowners whose properties are in flood zones. FEMA has expanded the number of communities throughout the country that are eligible to receive coverage.
?The consequences otherwise are pretty dire,? said Kang in an interview with the source. ?You?re out on your luck. You just take a chance.?
Private home insurance policies traditionally require homeowners to add flood insurance on to their existing policy, and it usually takes 30 days for coverage to go into effect.
